Thoughts on 860 Simonis

Recovering my 9 foot table (tight pockets and fast rails) and have had a lot of people tell me I won't like it (Simonis 860). What are your thoughts and what cloth would you use for a home practice table. One guy (pool hall owner) told me I should consider 760 Simonis. Thanks for your input.

860 in dry conditions can't be beat. If the table will be in an area with high humidity, 760 is perfect.

My basement has higher humidity. I run a dehumidifier all the time and have 760... and it plays like 860.

in a wet area i like 760, in Vegas where I'm at 860 is perfect. both are the best cloth IMO by a big margin, nothing else is compairable.

I live in a very dry area, despite the never ending snow the relative humidity stays low compared to coastal areas. There is radiant heat in the concrete floor under my table so the cloth is always dry and at a even temperature. I went with 860 and it is fast so fast sometimes I think there is no Simonis someones just painted my slate blue.

Check out the Simonis 860HR best of both worlds and good in high humidity do a Simonis 860HR search on here rkc has some good thoughts on it

It's very humid here and I have 860HR on my table. I love it.

I would recommend putting on what you will play on the most.

I recommend you find out what the tables you play on have and then try to emulate that. Do you have a dehumidifier? Do you run the ac a lot of the time? Do you know what the humidity is in your home pool room?

If I have humidity below 50% my 860 plays good. Above that and I have trouble getting good draw on the cb.

Check with other table owners? Check with other players in your area?

Now I'm really confused. Everyone seems to have a choice of cloth that remains fast in humid weather. My table is on a screened patio in Tampa Florida. Whats the best cloth for it? I like a fast table. Johnnyt

Velvet. Preferably crushed:)

Stretched TARP.

I use to play in the Cincinnati area and I swear, it was raining at least 2 days a week. Low humidity was usually considered to be around 60% and normal was in the 70s and 80s. But this was for the outside conditions. Not inside.
A/C and heating usually compensates for the large changes in humidity inside a pool room. IMO.

I never knew anyone that had an outdoor pool table.

Seriously, Johhnyt, I would think in that type of humidity, you might want at least 760, or maybe even billiard cloth. I would think that regardless, it will wear out fairly quickly.

OK thank you. I was thinking of the 3 cushion cloth, but that's a lot to spent if it't not much better. Johnnyt

It's not going to matter which cloth you use if it doesn't get installed correctly. I see way too many tables with loose 860 and they don't play worth a damn. Using staples doesn't cut it. Glenn(RKC) has the best method by stretching and applying glue instead of staples.

Yes, what most people are really chasing is properly installed cloth. Makes a world of difference!!

Good point Chris!!

Thanks,

Ray

Ive always liked to have the pockets tight on my practice table, never gave much thought to the cloth and just always used 860. Then I went and spent a few days with the old man on the mountain. He has tight pockets with glued on billiard cloth (860 is a 19oz cloth this stuff is a 17oz cloth) on his table. I couldnt even play, the stuff was so fast it was unreal. But when I got back to town, it didnt take long to figure out why he had his table set up that way. Its alot easyer to hit the ball just a bit harder than it is a bit softer.

I've played quite a lot of pool on Siimonis cloth...860, 760, and even 300, which is actually designed for carom tables. Now, granted, I play mostly Straight Pool 99% of the time, but, I'd take 760 over anything else, always, any place, any tiime, and I don't care what the humidity is, or what the geographic region is!

I would go with 760 stretched so tight the slate buckles. On a porch, off the coast, it is just a matter of time until it loosens considerably...I like a table where you can play 3, , and even 5 rail shapes without slugging the ball. Im not sure You can get that on a porch off the coast, bt in my experience, the 760 is your best bet.

Can one of you guys explain to me why playing straight pool would affect your cloth preference? Do people like having a faster or slower cloth for straight pool?

I have Simonis 860 on my home table, and play a mix of 8 ball, 9 ball and straight pool. I never really thought in terms of what cloth was best for which game.

I love the way my 860 plays, but, to be honest, it shows a bit more wear than I'd expect after two years. Maybe I'll go with 860 HR next time.

Some people have stated that the championship tour edition 3030 plays like the 860, but wears a little better/lasts a little longer. Would anyone here argue for me trying that cloth out next, or stick with 860 or 860 HR?

(by the way, it's all fairly academic at this point--My wife would kill me if I spent the cash right now.)
