So i just recently got my new cue from Jim Baxter, and i must say, this thing plays amazing. No completes even a little. Great action, perfect feedback, and balance in a way i have only ever felt in one other cue (a friend of mine has a jerry franklin era SW merry widow).

But after what was probably 10-12 hours of playtime, which is typically what i find to be the normal play in time for most tips.... Mine is starting to delaminate. The glue line between the 2nd and 3rd layer of the tip is where its starting to seperate.
Just curious if anyone else has had this happen... I know them emerald is a lower end layered tip, but i have never had any issues with ANY tip from Tiger. Maybe i just got a bad one. Just thought it was strange and wondered if qnyone else has had tips delaminate so early?

I've been using and selling the Emeralds for a couple years now and never had a problem. Unfortunately I think you have a bad one. Mr. Baxter would probably stand behing it. I'm wondering though what you might be using to scuff or shape it. I only use a prik and never on the center after the initial shaping. If your twisting or dragging an abrasive over the center that could cause a seperation.

Tiger Tips . . .

I'm on my second box of the Emerald tips . . . never had problem one. Great tip for only a little cheese . . . sold a bunch to friends and they love 'em. Probably got a bad one but from what I've seen they must have pretty good QC; I use Snipers and never had a bad one of those either. I like Tiger - more consistent then most brands. Don't give up on 'em.

I dont hold Jim responsible even a little... He did a fantastic job!!! When its left his hands it was perfect, no way for him to see into the future.
Just makes me wonder whether i want to give the emerald another shot, or try something new

First, thanks for your service!

2nd, did you like the way the tip played before the separation? If so, I'd probably stick with it. That said, there are lots of good tips out there with many threads about them here...

I liked it alot. Not sure whether i like it better than my moori M. I got more action from the emerald, but it has a more "clicky" sound to it.

The first ones I put on mushroomed like hell. After that I compress them until they take a .020 shorter set and then give them just a little edge taper.

That seemed to hold them ok.

Never had delamination. I would suspect a scuffer used in the up direction instead of the down direction. Also a tip pic twisted when using caused that,

Kim

I am talking about tiger emerald......................

Not really sure what caused it... heck it may have just been bad luck. But on Monday I am going to take it down to Phillipi's shop in Pasadena and have him put another one on. I am going to give the emerald another shot. Haven't really had it on long enough to give it a fair assessment yet. We will see what happens. worst case i will cut it off and go back to one of the many i KNOW i like

That clicky sound you are describing is an indication of a tip that is losing it's glue bond.

I wouldn't base how that type of tip plays from the one that is on the cue now as it would be a bad example. (being that it is probably past repair at this point)

Thanks Dud, i never even thought of that. Makes complete sense though

tips

i have had 2 or 3 snipers do this. i called tiger to find out whats going on.
i was told moisture is the cause.
this why im very careful about taking a drink the moisture gets on the tip and the shaft.

also you might pm jim. im sure that jim will fix this problem.

Hi Jay , Mike just pointed this out to me . I have never used Snipers myself , I always use Emrolds or Wizard tips . If you want to send the shaft back , I will put hat ever you want on it . I recomend the Emrold tho . Get me informed on whats happening . thanks Jim

Sending this as a PM also .

Jim,
Im not concerned with it in the slightest. I am more than happy with how our transaction went, and in no way do i hold you responsible for a tip coming apart. I appreciate you offering to fix it, but I dont think it makes sense for either of us to pay to ship a shaft for a tip. Not abig deal at all. I am Soooo happy with my cue and even happier with how helpful you were in getting me EXACTLY what i wanted.
You are a gentleman and a professional!

Jay , with the way the P.O. is trating packages these day , best not to trust our luck , Huh. Keep me posted . Jim

tip

some of the tricks is to cut 1/3 of the tip off .
the newer layered tips are thick. some players like a shorter tip.
i think there is info on it on you tube.
but if you think the tip is trashed what do you have to loose.
just dont go so short you screw up the ferrule.

Not a problem. Phillipi custom cues happens to be about 15 mins away, so on monday im going to swing by and have him put a new one on.
Thanks again Jim! And again, please dont fret over this, it happens from time to time, and there was no way for you to know it would come apart

Emeralds are a decent tip Bud, you just got a bad one. That happens with the best of tips. Don't let that turn you off of trying another. You will most likely be happy with the Emerald.

If you are changing the tip anyways, I would try the Onyx. The Emerald is a good tip but I think their Onyx is a GREAT tip.
