Tim Scruggs Cue Repair Advice Needed

I am doing this for a friend, and I know it has been discussed a few times, but who would be the guy to send this cue to for repair.
I have heard that there are a couple of cuemakers authorized by Tim Scruggs to do this type of repair.
It was my recommendation to send it out, rather than having local cuemaker work on it, so now it's my problem.
I also have a TS Hoppe sneaky that could use a little work.

  • Butt cap replacement
  • Refinish w/linen wrap
  • Logo replication

Thanks
Ted

Use Scott Sherbine at Proficient Billiards. He just did both a block letter Joss and a sideways Josswest for me and they are beautiful. I had Joss do one a few years ago and mine got lost in their production shuffle and the repairs were not done well. I have at least 30 old Joss and Josswest and Tad cues and love them, but Scott will do the repairs.

I don't know if Jess June (former worker with Bill McDaniel) is still doing cue work in Jackson, TN, but ideally he would be a good choice to do the work. That cue was made in Bill's shop in Jackson when he and Tim had a partnership going.

I have been told that Dan Janes has been given the rights to reproduce the Scruggs logo. Hall of Fame cue maker, founder of the shop where Scruggs got his start. I would call there first. Dan himself still does custom cues with his own hands, always has. For such work I would speak to him directly.

Scott Sherbine is excellent of course, but I don't know that he is permitted to reproduce that logo. One could not be faulted for contacting him though.

The same can be said for Ryan "ratcues". Excellent reputation in repair/restoration. One could not be faulted for contacting him as well.

Bob Frey

I think Bob is the guy you want to talk to. He and Tim go way back Scuttlebut has it that many of the full splice TS sneakys were made by Bob

He is a good guy and like Tim a Resident of Balti more!

good luck

The late Mike Cochran told me Bob Frey didn't make any of the sneakies from the 90's, which represents the majority of the TS sneakies out there. Just be careful, when someone tries to pass one off as being made by Bob Frey.

Thanks for the replies so far.
Jess June or Bob Frye would actually be good choices and I like the Dan James suggestion.

I had my buttcap replaced and a refinish by Bob Frey about a year ago. He is very fair on his prices and did a great job. Most importantly he is authorized to replace the TS logo. I called his shop returning a call of his and he didn't answer, he called me back about an hour later to say he was actually eating lunch with Tim. I thought that was kinda cool.

send it to Bob Frey. his number is 410-747-7392 and mailing address is

2013 Norhurst Way S.

Sneaky...

So...who did make the TS sneakies? I bought one back in '89 or '90. The original shaft warped a bit and I had a local guy make another.
Great hitting cue, would never sell it.

I sez dis

Anything you read on Jimbo's Army link is worth the paper it is written on. Bob and Tim built all the Cues. Customs and sneakies along with Tim. Just as they did everything working together at Joss before starting TS Custom Cues together. And did so until he left years later.
Bob Frey or Danny@JossCues.comor or Mike Webb may be a great help here. I owned a Cue like that. It had heavy shafts.
Nick :)

If you could get John Madden interested in doing the work,
you would be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Bob Frey 1-410-747-7392 he made almost all the scruggs cues back then and he charge a very reasonable price!NO BRAINER HERE!

Another Maryland resident and excellent cuemaker Leon Sly purchased the Tim Scruggs shop taper machine directly from Tim. Leon told me a while back it has all of Tim's shaft tapers programmed in. If I needed TS shafts, he'd be my first call.

If Danny Janes can and will recreate Tim's logo on the butt, I'd certainly have him do the work on the buttcap.

So you are saying Alton made a fake email from Mike Cochran about the history of who made these cues? I always read Bob made most of them but now I don't know what to believe?

Stan

Really?

I saw nothing inaccurate in that thread.

The vast majority of the sneakies made in that shop were made by Jeff Wolfe, under the inspection of Tim.

When Jeff left 10 or so years ago, the production of the sneakies stopped.

The contents of that email are accurate regardless of what Nick thinks.

Thanks Tony

Tony thanks for the clarification. Glad to have someone clear this up.

Stan

What I am saying is this.

Bob Frey didn't only make sneakies. He made all Cues. Made them with Tim. Everyone seems to think Bob only built sneakie Petes. Jeff built many sneakies for me. Many. He answered the phone alot. We talked alot.
It just gets old hearing Bob built the sneakies. He did and so did Tim. They built everything together when Bob was a partner there.
Jeff did a great job with the sneakies. He was not the only person building them.
Jimbo's sight has so many postings that are pure crap including Bob building only the sneakies.
Jimbo's sight isn't the place to go for anything but opinions.
Nick :)
