I didnt do it

hey guys, well, i know there is a lot of tip threads already, and i've read most of them, and i still cant figure out what tip to try next. i've tried moori hard, tiger laminated soft and med, sniper med/hard, le pro med (i think thats what it was), and elk master. now the thing is, i wasnt a big fan of the layered tips. and the elk master and le pro played to soft for me. now, i'm thinking of trying a hard tip, it dont matter layered or not, as long as it grips the cue ball good for english. i was thinking triangle? but, am looking for opinions. thanks in advance,
manuel

From what you've said, I'd go with the triangle for a non-layered tip. It's the only type of non-layered tip that I've used and like.

Otherwise I prefer layered and like: Wizard, Kamui II or Kamui Black (I generally like med. but the Kamui black med. is too hard for me). Talisman and everest are also supposed to be good -- I have one of each but haven't had a chance to try them yet. Most all come in med. and hard.

Edit: I've not tried them but poolndarts.com sells what they call Dudlys. They are milk pressed elkmasters(?) that are a single layered tip that are harder than usual that others swear by. You can also buy these milkdud type tips from others but I'd go with the Dudlys because you can always get more of the same if you like them.

Triangles are an excelent choice. You can get one at any cue repair shop, and they play pretty consistant their whole life. I like the layered tips as well, but if you are what I call a "tip picker" (someone that is constantly shaping, or picking at their tip). You will like the Triangle better. Get your installer to press it enough to flatten the out of the box crown, and the mushrooming will be minimal. Good luck!

hahaha, actually, i'm not gonna lie i do pick at my tips occasionally, especially after a miscue, but they dont happen that often. and, i dont like playing with a whole tip, its distracting, so i always have to have them shaved down.

You could PM Crown City Cory and ask him about Tigers new Emerald tip.
They might be close to a Triangle. The people that are using them are liking them.

Another vote for Triangles, from a former layered tip user and non-believer. I might try Sniper or go back to Mooris if I could afford it, which I can't at the moment. Triangles give the best bang for your buck, in my opinion.

Here's one more vote for triangles. I've used them for years, and really like them.

Note: Using a tip pic on a layered tip will often cause separation of the layers, and you will end up replacing them very quickly.

well, it seems like you have tried many. Triangle tips are cheap, and they come on some very nice cues stock, such as Black Boar cues. You don't have much to lose, since they are cheap.

Tiger has a new tip called emerald, they seem OK, but I haven't used that shaft much yet.

Since you tried so many tips and aren't happy, maybe it's your cue, your shaft diameter or shaft taper. I have one shaft that I don't like so well because I don't get much action out of it, but the place I play at just changed the cloth on the main table we use for challenge, and that table is so fast. I made 6 balls on the break last night, and 4 or 5 balls isn't too uncommon either on that table, playing 8-ball that is.

Well, I like to use that shaft on that fast table, but I hate it on a regular speed on slow table.

What kind of cue are you using? try playing some games with others cues.

well, right now i'm shooting with a Coker, Tom just made me a new shaft and turned down the original shaft. both are at 12.25mm now. but, i've tried all the low defection shafts predator 314-2, z-1, z-2, ob-1, ob-2, tiger x, and the Coker, in my opinion is the best one. i love the feel of the full maple shaft. i've also tried production cues that my friends own, and a couple other customs, but the coker just feels right. but, i guess i havent found the right tip for the shaft that im using, or can it be just me?

It may be you. Try this. Have a new tip put on and don't ask what it is.
Try to get the tip out of your head and just make nice smooth strokes and don't hit the cue ball too far off center.

Single layer tip - WB, layerd - Hercules. There ya go, two very hard tips that grab the ball like flypaper, lol. I love em both, but the WB (Water Buffalo) tips can sort of blow out on ya. If you are taking a serious swing and miscue, there is a good chance that a piece of the tip will exit the end of your cue. The Hercules on the other hand, play very very good if you like a hard tip. Just my opinion.

ok, so i was doing a lil research, and i think i've narrowed down to 2 tips, either tiger laminated 11 layer tip with a hard rating, or triangle. anyone play with the tiger tips? which are more consistant?

You cant go wrong with the Triangle, Tiger makes good tips and they are also the maker of the Emerald. I've been trying out the Emerald for the past couple of weeks and so far I've liked it. The mushrooming is very minimal and it has a firm feel to it, about the same as a Triangle. The Dudley was suggested but I wouldn't suggest it, the tip needs constant grooming, glazes over and won't hold chalk. If you want a real milk dud get ahold of Mike Johnson (Jensen Cues) he is the creater of it.
