Tip Maintenance, which tool?

I'm using a LePro tip at the moment, which I'm not really sure I care for, and it's starting to mushroom on me. There are more than a few tools that I could try out, Porper alone makes like 3 or 4, so I'm just wondering which is the easiest to use? I could also use some advice on the best way to burnish the tip once I've got it trimmed.
 
if you have the following: razor, a tip tool to shape your tip (Dime or nickle, your preference, I like the willard) and a piece of leather and spit. You are good to go. If my tip starts mushrooming, I just get my razor and scrap or cut off the mushroomed parts. Afterwards, shape it with the tip tool. Use spit to wet the walls of the tip and burnish the side wall with the leather until the wall of the tip looks shiny and in some cases or most cases, darker.

Burnishing the walls would help stop mushrooming. Question, a lepro is pretty hard, are you shooting too hard? Just a thought :) hope this helps.

After a second look, it's not so much that it's mushrooming, it's really just flattening out and losing it's shape a bit. While it's my primary player, I also use it to break with. It's a fairly new tip, I've only been playing with the cue for a couple of weeks, so I guess this is just natural. I'll reshape it with my Willard's dime shaper and everything should be alright. I just like picking up new gear and thought I'd look into mushroom shavers.
 
i used cuetecs bowtie and was quite satisfied but recently got mezz tip tool and i must say im sold.its by far the best thing i used and it looks it will last for a while.you got everything u need on that tool its made really good and overall a quality product
 
I have a Willard's dime shaper and tip pik already, what I was specifically looking at were tools made to trim the edges of the tip so that it's no longer a mushroom shape. I don't really need one now, but I'm still interested to see what you guys use.
 
I found LePro trips to be inconsistent. I have one shaft which works great, and another which requires constant shaping because it keeps flattening out. Williard tip shapers work great and unlike the bowtie doesn't get clogged.

If you're considering Porper's mushroom grazer, I have one. It suppose to work like a pencil sharpener, but doesn't give idiot proof results like a pencil sharpener. If I don't pay attention, it will nick the ferrule or give uneven cut or at worse ruin a tip and ferrule.

The Ultimate Tip Tool is nice. It has dime and nickel shaper, tapper, a files to file the sides of your tip so it's flush with the ferule, and the "V" part that you can use to clean your ferrule.

I can assure you the V part is to burnish the sides of the tip.
Not for cleaning ferrule.:confused:

aahhhh see something new everyday. i hate learning from bangers :( thank god for az! lol
 
Merlin, I mostly use Porper products.
Mushroom Grazer for installing and maintenance.
Little Shaver for the same as above.
The Porper burnisher is also a must have. Like one poster mentioned, they work great for repairing a mushroom too. I moisten the tip with a little spit and twist the burnisher over the tip.
The Porper Cut Rite will also give your tip a perfect nickel if you prefer not to shape the tip yourself.
I carry a Willard shaper, a 4" curved platic shaper and a piece of leather in my case.
Also, the Sandman curved shaper is a great tool.
That Mezz tip tool looks decent too. I'm a gadget retard so will probably end up with one of those.

Before i got my lathe for tip and ferrule repairs i was using the Porper All in one cube looking thing. Downside- It weighs a ton and a little big to carry around.
 
I just picked up one of these from my local cue maker:

It fits quite nicely into the pocket of a cue case, and mine came with replacement sandpaper. There is the curved shaper, a smaller shaper in the handle, on the other side is a tapper, and two holes which are designed to be burnishers.

All I know is, this thing shapes up a tip wicked fast...even the really hard ones! Not sure where to get them, but there is one on eBay currently for almost a steal: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...Category=21568&_trkparms=algo=LVI&its=I&otn=2

I have a little 1 1/2" square of 60 grit sand paper that I carry in my wallet, (along with a small sheet of 2500). On the very rare occasion that I feel the need to rough my tip, I gently scrape the 60 grit across my Kamui black SS. That happens like maybe once every few weeks. That's it.
