Tip Size

It seems most cues come with tips 13mm, it seems a bit large to me I personally prefer about 12.mm. What's the norm for the rest of you?

My first cue, I had no idea what I was buying. Just something in my price range.

It had a 12mm tip. Later on, it was stolen and I found a couple of cues, a Cue Tec and a Scorpion at a Pawn shop. So, I had 13mm tips for some time.

Later on, buying used and a couple that I had made, I would ask for anything from 12.50 to 12mm.

That seems to be my Happy Place. A 13mm still feels like I have a telephone pole in my hand.

I always seem to go back to my Meucci every now and then. Black Dot is a 12.75 and I don't mind it with a Dime shaped tip.

Beyond that, I prefer not to get above a 12.75 mm.

I know that there isn't much difference between .50 or .25 mm and 13 mm, but man, I seem to be able to see and feel the difference.

I began playing with house cues that I assume had 13mm tips. My first cue (Player's HXTE10) was a notable improvement at around 12.50-.75mm. Currently my favorite is the OB2 shaft with its standard 11.75mm tip.

But I honestly don't think tip size makes much (if any) difference it how well I play. I'd probably be happy with the OB2 at 12.75 too.

might be useful to mention a few things about body dimensions, so conclusions like 'many folks around here are larger, and report liking the slimmest shafts'.

i'm a scrawny dude of average height, and prefer around 12.25-12.5mm. I like the 11.75mm conical shafts when playing open handed, but not so much with a closed hand, which is my preferred way. I surprisingly didn't like the extended taper S-tuned Z2 as much as I thought I would.

My favorite tip size is equal to the size of the Ferrule and end of the taper part of the shaft.

My play cue has an 11.75 dime, which I would prefer at 11.5.
My Break cue has 13.5 nickle, which is just fine for the break cue.
My Jump cue is 14mm quarter, which seems just fine for its duties.

I started out with 13 mm using bar cues. Bought my first cue went down to 12.75. Then bought my current cue which has a 12.5. I just bought a Meucci Pro shaft and had them bring it down to 12.25. I keep getting smaller and smaller shaft/tips as i get more comfortable with it.

Shafts

It is possible to have most or all solid maple shafts turned down.
I think 13mm is pretty much the standard and if the shaft is solid maple it can always be turned down as a option if the customer wants a smaller shaft.

All the shafts I make are std 13mm, I will turn them down to the size the customer request or the customer can always take the shaft to any cue repairman and have it turned smaller once they get a chance to try the shaft out.

I wouldn't consider it unusual for allot of players to modify a solid maple to make it play they want it too.

I wouldn't touch any LD shaft without first talking to the person or the company that
made and warranties the shaft BEFORE TURNNING IT DOWN...................

Weird, I started with an OB Classic Pro, and now I'm shooting with an HXT. I really want to buy the E10. Is it as pretty in person? But yeah, when I first bought an OB shaft to put on my Dufferin Butt, it was too much cue for me to handle. I hated it. I pulled it out last night, after it been gathering dust in my case, and I must admit, it hits great. I just don't think I was good enough to use it properly at the time. Now I feel bad, cause I'm fully used to the deflection I get off the Hxt's, and I would like to stay with the HXT.

Yes, HXTE10 is a nice looking cue, but I'm not big on fanciness in cues. I like its simple, clean look. I'm not sure about the other cues in the HXT series, but the HXTE10 is a "decal" cue; the points aren't real.

I think the HXT series cues are vastly underated; I don't know where else you can get so much cue for $130. The only reason I switched to the OB121 was that I realized I preferred a wrapless cue.

9.75mm ultralow deflection (hollowed front end with small ferrule), conical tapered for stiffness, made to my specs by Ed Young of Chicago.

I think I could live with a Predator Z-2 (11.75mm) but nothing larger.

The advantages of a narrow tip for me are:
- lower deflection (less "end mass")
- more precise cueing (see better where I'm hitting the CB)

Narrow tips don't spin the CB more or less and are not more or less forgiving of cueing errors (common myths).

Do you know your pure pivot point with that cue with the 2 1/4" CB Patrick? I'm guessing 18"+

I think so, but I don't use the pivot point so I haven't measured it carefully - I assume it's too far back (compared to my short bridge) to be useful with BHE.

I have the HXT30, and it's also a decal cue. I've always been really fond of sneaky pete type cues, and I have a player's sneaky pete, and a sneaky pete J/B cue. Only problem is, randoms keep taking my cues, thinking they're house cues, and I have to go hunt them down. I'm considering buying another player's J/B cue, just for that reason alone.

I have played with shafts ranging from 11.75mm to 13mm
I spent a fair amount of tme before I found the shaft for me. I play with a Mezz WX900 shaft, it`s got a 12mm tip diameter. A great shaft, I highly recomend it.
