Tip

I notice most pros tips are about 1/16 to 1/8th inch high from ferrule. Is the amount of tip above the ferrule a factor in spin?
My Elk Master is 1/4 in above ferrule, play daily and is 3 months old. Any input?

spin is dependent on where and how the cue tip strikes the cue ball
a tips thickness is not relevant for practical purposes

a pros tip is thin because they play alot and dont want to break in a new tip all the time
or maybe spend the money on a new tip so they milk it to the max
i have also heard it said that a tip plays best towards the end

:sorry:

Their tips look low 'cause they shoot pool a lot and they just get worn and shaped more
often than the normal APA player.

But a lot of players like the first layer and up to three layers taken off a layered tip when new.

Plays better that way.

I know of a few players that take a razor and cut half of a new tip off.

Tip hardness doesn't seem relative to them cutting half the tip off.
In other words regardless of brand of tip they still cut part of the tip off.

Since it's their job and they like them low then it's justified for them to change them more regular than most of us. With the cost of new tips these days most of us like them a little higher so that we can get our money's worth from them.

I had Kamui Black SS tips on two of my shafts. When new, both of them were almost a half-inch high and I didn't like the way they played or felt at all.

On one regular maple shaft, I replaced the tip with a different one because I could never get the feel right.

On my Predator FAT 314-2 shaft I had to cut off about half of it to get it to feel right.

When it was the original length, I think the tip swayed to one side (bent) when you hit the cue ball hard. Lots of the people I know had to chop this particular type of tip down a bit to get them playing right on their cues. Most of the people were using Predator shafts.

Personally I thought I would like a tall tip, I was wrong...
Medium height tip works for me ..

I assume layered tips are glued. Is there enough room between layers to shape a nickel or dime radius with being within the glued portion?

I usually have a couple layers taken off of a new tip install. Of course the tip height goes down as I work on the tip from time to time. I play about 20 hours a week and do not do that much shaping of the tip and a tip seems to last me about 10 months. I let them go fairly far down though.

It makes a small difference where the compressed tip in on the surface of the CB overcomes the inertia of the CB.

The contact point is the same but look at the different positions of the red dot "pressure point".
