Titlist Hit - why so good

Speaking of Titlists, I was at Jack Madden's house on wednesday and had a chance to shoot with an old Rambow, the hit is unlike anything else. It's like shaking hands with an angel

Just a curious question. If you picked up that cue and didn't know that it was or told that it was a old Rambow would it have felt as good?

I never had the opportunity to play with a Rambow and am just wonder why it is any better than any other top cue maker of today.

I've heard "harmonics" and "resonance" mentioned a lot, but I've never heard anybody say what they are or what kind are good or really much of anything about them except that some cues have good ones (even though none seem to have bad ones).

Can these things be described or are they somebody's intellectual property?

Harmonics are those things that Bob Dylan wears around his neck and blows into making a nice wheezing sound. Resonance is the ability of humans to make judgements about different stuff that woods might do they can't otherwise figure out.

old wood has better, more consistant resonance, it changes with time however the older the wood the less the change.

I think harmonics does apply here as well, but i'm too sleepy to look it up now. Not gonna argue with you about it-your my friend, but I think there is a relationship between harmonics and resonance, something from physics class along time ago.

my concept of old wood cues has came in time to me over the past 22 years of playing pool and experiencing alot of cues and owning some cues for that many years, i have learned this

It's impossible to know now
but i can say that it had a completely pure and mellow feel that's unlike anything I've ever shot with before. Hell, the next person who shoots with it may hate it. That's why there is no perfect cure that suits everyone, 10 people will interpret a certain cue's hit 10 different ways

Indeed, someone we both know aims to make his 2-pieces hit like the best 1-piece, and succeeds. I've had one of his full-splice sneaky's, a plain jane, and now a Titlist (not full-splice), and they all hit,feel,play almost identical. It's the cue-maker's skills that makes this possible.

Would be interesting to compare the pattern from cues with different "harmonics".

Accelerometers mounted inside rubber cap:

Would get better data on the hit from solid a mount.

Slip-on rubber mount does not affect the stroke and swerve data, which was the original intent of the design.

I have a friend who plays with an old Rambow.

It's fine.

Nothing really special though, IMHO.

I have a custom full-splice Schmelke sneaky that hits very similarly to the Rambow. I prefer the Schmelke.

The Rambow's worth a lot, yet it's his player.

I think the key is in the full splice... plus a quality shaft, of course.

Thats it in a nutshell,I play with a Odom cue,and his wood that he use's for his shaft's,came from an old gymnasium floor,it hits like a solid old cue.

thats cool, real cool, i never gave it any thought but i bet there is a pile of good wood in some old floors, it dosent move around like new wood does, i have a collection of cues from 1960 to current and at around 20 years old the maple starts getting that darker yellow color and seems to firm up a bit, i have one SW I got new in 87 and have been watching it all these years get darker. I play with a mid 70's Gus the shafts are hard as diamonds, you cant ding them, on new shafts I get little micro dings(not dents-i dont move balls with my shaft etc.) on the 30 year and older shafts they just feel better.
