i bought 5 titlist to convert and they all were very dirty, and i could not see what type wood they were, so i decided to take a pass to get a good look at the wood, as soon as i started on the first, the scent hit my nose. rosewood, i could not stop now, the room filled with dust, and my eyes started to water. by the time i had cut the piece my nose, ears, and eyes started to itch. where the dust had settled on the sweat around my neck and inside my elbows began to itch. when i saw the piece of wood i forgot about the itching. i quickly opened all windows, turned on all fans, and put on my full facemask. i then sanded the piece and sealed it.
what a beautiful piece of wood on a titlist.
later that night my sinus started to ache,my throat raw, my eyes and nose were still itching even after a long shower. that was saturday afternoon, i was in bed all day sunday feeling miserable, its tuesday morning and my eyes still itch.
i have a love - hate relationship with brazilian rosewood.

Geeze man, you scared me. I thought I was going to read about a lathe accident or something.

Even still...the allergy can certainly take you out just as easy...nothing to mess with.

Glad you're OK...

Coco is the one that gets me. I get the exact same symptoms that you described.

I've heard that Brazilian screams when you first cut into it, which should of been your first warning.

the rosewood

it now has a seal, best photos i could get.

I saw a really neat picture of this full encloser that shuts down over someones Deluxe lathe and exhausts all the dust out. :)
We do get in a hurry sometimes. I breath way more dust than I should also.

lathe cover

chris, i have a cover over my delux, but thats just for the larger chips, that damn rosewood dust sneeks out of every little crack, and once its in the air it attaches to the moisture around my mouth, nose and eyes, it also gets on any sweat on my neck and arms.
it has been 6 days, and i still have a bit of irratation on my mouth, and nose, but the eyes are the worst.
btw i have a buyer when its finished, so as soon as i heal up i'm back at it. this time with long sleeve shirt and a full facemask.

Go get you a dust collection system like sits in the floor and hook it up to that box and pipe all the fine dust right out a dryer vent in the wall. Don't kill yourself to save a little on the heat bill. If you need some help on it call me sometime. Sears sells a great little single bag floor unit that you can just remove the bag and hook a hose in its place and pipe the dust right out the wall.

I sometimes get a slight reaction to cocobolo but what gets me the worse is bubinga.
