To all road players: Boston Area Action

I just got back from Boston this morning where I was invited to play Tony Ruberto a 5,000 set of nine ball at Brighton Billiards in Brighton Center in Boston. I got there on Monday around 3:00 in the afternoon and had made an appointment to play Tony on Monday around 6:00 at the pool room. I flew in from Indy where I got into some good action prior the night before and was tired but b/c I said I was going to play I went ahead and played 10 ahead 7,000 and I lost. The agreement was that if I won I would pay all my expenses and if I lost they would pay my expenses so when I lost they handed me 700.00 back to cover round trip airfare, cab, and room. I asked what they wanted to do the next day and they said I could bet whatever I want so I flew in a friend from Tennesse and he arrived at 9:50 the next night and we were in action by 10:30 for 10 ahead for 11,500.00 and I won so I gave them half the money back for expenses and everything was fine. So I asked what do you guys want to do tommorrow. They said once again I can bet what I want so I called another friend from Slidell,LA and said lets try and play them set for 25,000 or more and he said I be there the next day. Me and my buddy wake up on Wensday and go to the poolroom and say we want to play for 17,000.00 and Tony says no problem, calls his man, and within the hour we are playing for 17,000 with 34,000 posted up in a resume size envelope that we put under the table b/c the owner had never been the the whole time we played and the worker said there was not a safe. The lights over the table were 3 prong lights with no solid base to put it on the light so I thought this would be the best thing. 4 hours later Tony is on the hill and 1 hour after that I am even. About six hours into the match I go to the restroom to wash my hands and face and come back out start playing again and about 30 minutes later I decide to get a tapper out of my case under the table and the resume envelope was gone. I tell Tony whats going on and he and all the sweaters start saying they dont know how it happened and they never saw anyone near the table. So the bottom line is I am out 17,000.00 and I guess I am a sucker for thinking you can travel to other parts and play for big money and expect to not have problems. Down south between Baton Rouge,Mobile,Hattiesburg, and New Orleans if you win you just win and if you loose you just loose. I know my money is gone but I wanted everyone to know that the Boston area is no good for action and we all know someone in Tonys click got the money and I would hate for the same thing to happen to someone else. Thanks for the heads up on the creeps up there-really sucks. What about your buddy?Did he go to the b/r with you?

How in the world could nobody see someone grab that much money under the table?

People have been shot for a lot less money than this. Good thing you're a much better person than I because that place would have its second mystery- who lit it on fire? I'd say just kidding but I get mad just thinking about my pool cues getting stolen; 17K vanishing in front of witnesses and I'm liable to flip out like a pissed chimpanzee and start biting off fingers and tearing off nuts...

The railbirds are apparently blind so no worries about being caught :)

Hi lil John,
I am sorry to hear that. With all your experience, how did u fall for that!!!
By the way do u mind mentioning the name of the player from Slidel,LA?
Your opponent(Tony) can`t be ruled out of the list of people of interest.
Next time take every thing(including the girl friend) with u to the bath room.Cheers

For 17 grand, I don't think I would have just been shaking my head and standing around stunned. At that point, you should have had the front door and back door locked and had everyone drop their drawers if need be to see who had the money. For those kinds of bets being played, I would also recommend traveling with a gun, or at least obtaining one after arrival in a new city.

Little John, that is horrible, absolutely disgusting. Give us a call tonight or tomorrow, please!

A gun might help you get to your car but in this situation, it would only get you arrested or worse. I highly doubt the money was even in the building when LJ discovered it missing.

Maybe...and maybe not. Believe me, I've seen guns pulled for less money than this a number of times and there were no calls to the police, no arrests and no shots fired. It can serve it's purpose though in this type of setting. Personally, I'd have chanced it for that kind of money. Everybody in the place knew the guy was wronged.

I think LJ is doing probably the only thing he can now.
Get the word out and kill as much of Ruberto's action that he can.

This is not really an unusual scam, but it's one that hardly anyone ever gets burned by a second time. Scams like this is why it's always a good idea to have someone you can trust with you whenever you are playing for any appreciable amount of money. One person or the other should have an eyeball on the money at all times.

You know, it really sucks when things like this happen because it puts a damper on the whole city. Problem is, I honestly couldn't say that it wouldn't happen again but someone needs to find out what happened and the people responsible should be given a one-way ticket down south to be taken care of.

Sorry to hear about this.

Heard a friend of LJ's bopped a couple heads on his way out!

The friend of LJ's spoke to KM on the phone when LJ and Tony were playing. The FIRST thing out of KM's mouth was: "Where's the money? Who's got the money?" When the friend said it was underneath the table, KM said, "Get it out from underneath that table. You better get that money in a safe place right now!"

Young Gun Tony Roberto is a great player, loves action, and competes well in tournaments. I would think it would be to his advantage to straighten this mess out ASAP!

Now that suck big time >BUT u should know that if u go to somebody home room to match up, anything can happen .17 grand is a lot .Rember next time go to another room that has a safe and the staff is fair..And bring a cup if u have to go .Aim in the cup ..Never trust poolplayers .You know the rules Right ???
Trust No body..Ever .. ;) ;)

I would be curious to see how Tony handled it, or handles this. Since he had half the money involved. His reactions will dictate alot about what happened. Seems he would have been just as mad, if not more. Since it looks bad on his reputation, as well as the people in the area in general.

Damn, John.... Sorry to hear about that shit. Someone should've had posession of that envelope at all times.....

It would be to Tony's advantage to handle it very quickly. This stinks of a set-up (IMO), and what goes around will come back to haunt you, one day or another!
