To wrap or not to wrap....

I know this has been covered before but I have been through about 35 pages of threads and can't seem to locate it.

Which wrap do you prefer? Or do you prefer no wrap? And why? This is for your playing cue BTW

FWIW... I am having a custom built and I have already decided on no wrap. I have always had linen, but seem to like the cues without a wrap that I have tried.

I prefer a wood handle as it sticks in my hand better and I can hold it looser with better control. With linen it seems I have to squeeze the butt more to control the cue...the tighter grip tends to hurt my accuracy & cueball action. Believe it or not...I truly believe Bob Meucci was on to something by clearing over the wraps.

I, too, use a wrapless cue (314 SP) but was having problems of unconsciously moving my grip forward over time, thus negatively affecting my stroke.

So, I took some scotch tape and wrapped it around the butt where the linen would start and use that as a guidepost for my grip position. Looks stupid but it works....and looking stupid has its advantages sometimes.

On the other hand, my teammate had his new SP 314 worked on and had 'em put a wrap put on it. He could've simply bought one that way but didn't for some unknown reason.

I like the irish linen, in case my hand sweats a little. Also I like to have it to guide my grip hand to the same place.

I don't see why it would necessitate a tighter grip, my grip is quite loose.

I've only had two cues with leather wraps and wasn't crazy about them. All the rest were Irish linen, pressed if possible. I'm looking forward to trying wrapless some time in the near future.

I am about exactly like you on this. The poll should have allowed for multiple choices instead of just one. My Dad, who started out as an auto painter and owned a good sized Body Shop when I was little always told me to never buy a light colored car if I wanted that car to look good after it was 5-6-7 years old, which is exactly true, darker colors in cars stand up better over time.

I kind of carry that over to many things, including wraps on cues. I don't care for light colored wraps, they get real dingy over time, but I am not necessarily a black with white spec man either (Thinks cuemakers should have more imagination instead of just putting same-o same-o on their cues).

What about rubber wraps? Most all of the carom players that I know use a rubber or rubberized-foam wrap.

You can try using some Dr Zog's Sex Wax (surfers' wax) in the grip area of the handle...it will tack it up just enough to allow for your grip hand from travelling, but will look better than the tape.

I am a huge wrapless fan now as well....doubt if I will ever go back. I have not found a problem with my grip hand travelling on it's own. There are times when I feel that I need to be further up on the wrap area.

The reason I am a fan of wrapless now is because there is nothing to distract from the task at hand. Used to drive me a bit nuts when I needed to be further back on the wrap area and would hit that area between wrap and butt.

I am lucky in that I do not sweat in my hands while playing, so a wrap is not necessary for me. If it is particularly warm or humid, I have a towel I will wipe my hands off with...but it usually not an issue.

I prefer Irish linen but only because it's what I'm used to. I'm sure I could get used to a different wrap if I had one. I think the wrap's most important function is comfort (I've never had a cue slip unintentionally in my hand; so I don't think the friction is really that relevant), and comfort has a lot to do with familiarity.

You forgot rubber. Top carom players pretty much all use rubber. Of course, if you want your hand to slip on the grip, linen is good, but the carom players seem to want to be able to have the stick secure without a lot of paralyzing grip force.

Give me wrapless any day. After using snooker cues for everything back in the UK I bought my first cue with a wrap here last year. I found it irritating at times, so when I ordered my Dominiak I went for wrapless & much prefer that. I guess it helps that it's a great cue too!

Wrapless for me as well.

And on a custom cue, wrapless opens up the possibility of putting exotic woods in the grip section of the cue... to show off... and basically, to help beautify the cue. I have Thulya Burl in the grip section of mine.

I definitely like a no wrap cue. Like CigarDave posted it can enhance the looks of the cue. However there is more than one way to finish Irish Linen on a cue. Many cues that are doubled pressed feel almost like a no wrap cue.
