Tony Ellin vs. Johnny Archer on ESPN classic

I watched 'Challenge of the Champions' semi-final this morning on ESPN classic TV, and Tony Ellin won. This was from 1984, and Johnny was pretty young. Johnny, it was stated, was the #1 player on the pro tour at the time, and Tony was #5.

Who can tell me what tournaments Tony Ellin won?

He was to play the winner of Rafael Martinez and Nick Varner.

(I had forgotten that Johnny made his mark that early on the pro tour).

Might be interesting to see a list of Johnny's wins too.

Do you mean 94? Cuz 84 seems to me like that was a little early to be #1.

Had to be 94.

Because Johnny looked like this in 87. He is next to Gene "The Glove" Catron, circled.

I think JA is one very very srong player. He has a really high top end and
is consistent.

I was lucky enough to see JA from an early age and watch him grow into
a champion. When he was younger I think he played a different style than
he does today. If you watch some tapes of him from the 90s he just
flat runs out and has good timing. Now he is alot slower and picks at the
table.
While he has never really went away I think the IPT will bring out more of the older Johnny from the 90s. He is more settled now with a wife and family. With the money available it would not surprise me to see JA and
others really take the IPT seriously.

Interesting was that when JA was young (mid teens -late teens) everyone seemed to know that he was going to be a cut above the rest. Old guys then used to compare him to guys from their generation.
Another tidbit that its hard to tell today is that JA used to have quite a temper when playing. He is well more reserved today.

Whats your opinion of JA? I could be biased having started out watching him regularly.

JA was great when he shot fast. Bends over, looks at the shot then shoots.
Now, he's gone wacko.

It was in 1994.Tony Ellin was # 3 ranked in 1994.He was seen more number of times on ESPN than other players.In the challenge of champions match he lost to Nick Varner in the finals.Tony missed very simple shot on 6 ball.After that every shot was a easy shot and Nick came to the table and cleaned them and won 50,000 $.:cool:

RIP Tony Ellin,he died years back in an accident,he got hit by a train,he had a great break and played an awesome game,too bad hes gone.

I remember archers first ,t.v. apperince , he was playing in tourny i was working at murphy brss rail in athens ga. I walked up to him . and said johnny got a triva question, who was the first guy you played on tv , and what was the outcome, he didnt hesitate, jim mita, lost. he right, I have it on tape, the annancer,said he looked like a kid going to the prom, ha, real you in tux. OLD MAN STICK
 
I was a big fan of Johnny Archer when he was younger and trying to make his mark in pro pool. In the early days he played at a good pace and was exciting to watch and the Johnny Archer of today is slow and not as much fun to watch in my opinion. He's a nice guy and a champion, but I prefer his faster pace over the more deliberate slow style he plays today. I have Accu-stats matches of Johnny playing when he was young and I enjoy watching them, but I rarely watch any of his later matches because of his slow pace.

Johnny Archer made a believer out of me a couple of years ago at the 2004 DCC. I had just lost $100 sidebetting, taking Shannon Daulton against Efren in a tournement bank-pool set, and swore I'd never bet against Efren again. When the 10-ball ring game came up, I bought Efren in the "sports book", at crummy odds. Johnny just ran off with the thing, looking like he was a ball better than the rest of the field. When he's breaking well, he looks pretty much unbeatable (course, I guess you can say that about a lot of players). He's also a great comeback player; I've seen him when it looked like he was out of a tournement match, and he comes firing back like the champion he is. Just a spectacular 9-ball player for many years and still going strong.
