Top 3 Cues you would like to hit with

Mosconis 526 run cue
Efrens 15 dollar cue
My first Meucci back in 1985

I've got a cue made by the same guy who made Efren's original cue.....
...it was given to me by the player who Efren and Jose learned from...
....can't recall the cue maker's name.....but it is still straight.

It is not a cheap cue....it's just not fancy.

Balabushka
Tascarella
Black Boar

I've seen them all, most recently (within the last month) a Tasc and a BB...kind of regret not asking to try them when I had a chance, but those cues are still in my area, so we'll see....

I ran into an older gentleman in NC a while back that had what I thought (and he insisted) was a Bushka...I asked to take a swing with it, and as soon as I held it I realized it was an Adams reproduction. :( Oh, well, maybe someday I'll be in the same room as the real deal.

The only time I ever saw a real Balabushka was 1987 in Columbus, GA, and the old man wouldn't let anyone within 15 feet of it. He and his two fellow senior citizens played their straight pool game and packed it in early. It was a beauty, too, same level as Mosconi's. Don't know/remember who he was, but the room owner claimed he was a long time friend of Walderone's and had been a pretty serious money player back in the 60s. Heavy set, about 70 at the time, patch on one eye wearing thick glasses. Stroked standing up high with a slip stroke and moved the CB like silk.

Two cues renowned for their hit that I've never played with are:

1) Searing
2) Black Boar

both Tads and SWs (which I have played with) are also known for their hit and I must say i think both those cues deliver superior feel, so I'd be anxious to try one of the "hit" cues i have yet to experience.

Although not anxious enough to say yes to Will Prout's very generous offer to lend me his Searing box Cue at the Las Vegas ICCS. I just couldn't walk out of there (and into a pool hall) with that cue. Will was very anxious to see my reaction and completely sure I would be impressed, which says a lot about the Searing build.

Back when Best Billiards was open in Santa Ana, I had the opportunity to hit with alot of different custom cues. Tads and SWs were the two that stuck out in my mind as the best hitting cues, for me at least.

I would like to try a Searing, Szamboti (Barry), and a Black Boar. I can't imagine them being much different/better than my Tad. If they are, then I'm in trouble...

I've spoken with Rick recently. He's a kooky guy that was honored to be a pall bearer at Tad's funeral. I was never in Best, but of course have spoken with plenty of guys that went there. Places like that are a thing of the past in America. I think Lucky's shop got hashed in the Japan quake and I don't know if he is rebuilding.

SW and Tads do hit "better" although both differently. I would love to take a newer Searing and a newer Boar out for a spin. I think that's the Big 4 or cues that's claim to fame is hit, Searing, Black Boar, SW and Tad.

Like I said, Will was very sure the Searing would floor me.

I think, guys that hit on modern equipment with a George or Gus and are astounded by how much better those cues seemingly move whitey around are losing sight of the fact that the cues were designed to club dead balls around on carpet cloths with slow rails, and aren't really designed for the modern game. The most reactive feeling, lively and most fun to play with cue for me on modern equipment was a Gina.

What Tad do you play with?

I would pick a tuckerbuilt hunk i' firewood, if I had to pic just one.
I am a sneaky Pete fan and have been super impressed by Murray's output thus far.

Searing, Gina, lambros' newer efforts... Close 2nds, for me

I've owned cues from just about every important cue maker and have at least played with the remaining few that I didn't bother to own. The 1 maker I haven't tried is Randy Mobley and would be anxious to do that. I've heard wonderful things.

I will add this: woods used in cues were once living things and in addition to how a cue is constructed, its hard to predict how, once assembled, any cue might perform. I've owned two bushkas. 1 played great, the other awful. Same thing with searing. The 2 Gina's I owned were the best I ever played with. The first I snapped over my knee (yes, still ashamed), and the other is my everyday player for 7 years now. I've also owned cues that the hit was terrible. All by legendary makers.

Martin

I cant think of any others I haven't tried.

Ken

Ken, I sort of feel the same way, but I think these would get my juices flowing:

3 World Champion's cues....Irving's, Willie's, and the Miz's fanciest Balabushkas.

Merry Christmas, everyone !!

....................

My three choices ....would be

1) searing 1/2 SS joint
2) black boar 8 pointer
3) Gus or Barry szam

*so far Sugartree is the best cue I've hit with.
