Who are the top US straight pool players? I think Archer, Robles, Schmidt, Lipsky, Barouty are a good start.

San Souci, from what I hear shoots pretty good,

Chamberlain, Davis, Deuel, Williams.

Wilkie sounds like he is getting good at it.

A ton of older players around the US who may still be playing. Vanover, Lane, Gay, .... (See Lipsky's list)

Thanks for the mention Kaz, but I shouldn't be the fourth named player hehe... Sometimes in these threads my name gets mentioned earlier than it should because I am more active on the message boards than a lot of these other guys, but there are many, many players who should be named before me on a list like this.

Marop's list is good, with the possible exception of Sigel. He's not playing like he knows he can; I'm sure he'd be the first to admit that. I'd love to see (though not hear) him make a comeback.

Any US list would have to include the following players (who imo are all favorites over me, to varying degrees).

Archer
Deuel
Daya
Hopkins
Hatch
Harriman
Schmidt
Barouty
Robles
SanSouci
Williams
Maidhof
Hodan
Hunter (though not sure he still plays seriously)

I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Steve although it doesnt happen very often I have to disagree with you. Don't sell yourself short you are a fantastic player with some incredibly runs under your belt. You are just as knowledgeable as all of the players you are putting yourself behind and in truth we are lucky to have you on this forum. You are a gentleman to play against at all times and it was a pleasure to both play against you at amsterdam recently and watch you in Maryland. You are just as deserving as all of those players forementioned. Nuff Said.

Richard Peck is/was a great 14.1 player. not sure how he plays now though.

A previous poster mentioned Ginky, and I have to agree. He's a monster when he's serious about playing. He may well be the most underated pro player in the country.

Any list starts with Schmidt and Harriman. Actually, Archer, who won the straight pool event at the 2009 Mezz Classic over Mika in the final and came third last summer at Comet Billiards is just as obvious. Come to think of it, Charlie Williams won the Straight Pool Challenge at both Valley Forge and Derby City, besting John Schmidt on both occasions, so he's pretty obvious, too.

All the others mentioned in this thread so far are worthy, although I'm always amazed that Max Eberle is frequently overlooked in threads like this one. In 2006, he ran 124 and out on Harirman in the quarterfinal and came third in the World 14.1 Championships. Last year, other than champion Stefan Cohen, Max gave Archer his only loss at Comet. Wonder what he's got to do to get noticed.

Agreed, Stu. I think if Max moves to the East Coast that'll solve the problem of getting the recognition he deserves.

From what I understand, Max Eberle has moved back to the East coast. Virginia to be exact. Max's game and knowledge has always been one to be respected.

JR Gay is one although I am not sure how much he plays anymore. Either way he ran over 400 which gets him in imo. I've heard that Earl Strickland broke 400 as well, but I am not sure as to how often he plays the game. The one time I saw a video of him playing it was against Ervolino and he didn't look comfortable.

Hi,
think that list would be so long-and even then you ll *forget* someone who should be on the list. Imo the USA have several absolutley champions-and further more many many world-class players.

Jose Garcia deserves a mention here I think. I don't think he competes much these days but he is certainly a great 14.1 player.

I was thinking the same thing. JR used to post here, I know he'd laugh if he saw "400+" attached to his name.

800? Was that before or after the pit bull fought you for his blanket? lol

I know what you mean, John. In another thread, a "Sapolis"was described as a 200 ball run. Seeing I have only been over 200 twice in 35 years (and nowhere close to 200 in over 10+ years), I would tell anyone that a "Sapolis" is an extremely ugly 56 followed by a scratch on the break ball.
