Tournament Idea

I was curious if there is any interest in watching a 10 or 12 ball ghost tournament. Does anyone think that spectators would enjoy watching an all offense tournament with no boring safety battles and kick safes.

I really like the idea but I have not gotten a lot of feedback.

Does anyone think that 10 ball would be too easy? I think 12 ball or 13 ball might be more fun and exciting?

Would amateurs come and compete with pro's considering they will have the same opportunity to break get ball in hand and run racks

One of the Viking events last year was completely like this. I read about it on the forums, was not there in person. The write up was very positive as I recall.

A ghost tournament is a fine idea!

Going beyond a 9-Ball ghost, you lose all the amateurs IMO. And, you'd likely have to handicap it.

It's probably the WAY to handicapp pool effectively. Much like golf, your break shot is your tee shot. A run out of 9 would be par, run out of 8 would be birdy, run out of 7 an eagle, and a run of 6 would be a dbl eagle, a run of 5 would be a hole in one, if you make 5 on the break you get an automatic hole in one.

I don't know if a crowd could get invested in a guy playing the ghost. The one-on-one pressure and drama aren't there, and that could result in a lot of people tuning out.

Im just curious as to what people think.
I know I have read where john schmidt would play this format to neutralize peoples breaks.

Its not like a regular tourney, everybody will have the same opportunitys.
I think where the top top players excel is with safety play and kicking, if you take that out of the equation it would be a lot of fun.

Kinda like watchin a 3 point shooting contest.

Would anyone play?

I've always thought Ghost Tournaments would be good to have every now and then. If one was close to me and it was on the BB I'd play for sure. Good post. Johnnyt

I've been thinking of the same thing lately, though I was thinking of a 15-ball rack with ball-in-hand after the break.

It would be nice to watch how the pros played the breakouts once in a while instead of setting them up with a safety. There would also be some strategy as far as whether or not you would use the angle on the 1-ball to try to break up a 7,10 cluster or make sure to get a few points before you try for the breakout on the 5 or 6-ball.

You could have the one-on-one drama that a previous poster mentioned by playing match play like golf if that is what you wanted instead of stroke play.

What i would like to see is top pros talking during the whole match.Talking into the camera telling us why they are going for a certain shot and which English. Plus some goofing around. This would make it more personable.Of couse when they actually shoot they can clam up.

well that sounds more like a lesson to me, Im talking about a rotation game so there isnt much question as to the next shot.

I think 12 or 13 ball ghost is tough enough without using all 15 balls.
I would like it to be set up in a way that encouraged people that play like me to play
