Tournament registration etiquette. Your thoughts?

Do you know if the TD in your town allows for call-in registrations, or do you need to be there in person? Some tournaments here in TX allow people to call/text the TD to put their names on the list before the registration process begins. This is something I think is unfair.

I used to take call-ins but the player had to be in the room before I started the tournament. If I was doing the draw and the player was not in, he was left out of the tournament. It didn't matter i he got in a few minutes later, he was out.! Obviously, this created friction with many prima donnas but they started to come on time and not waste mine.

For my local events I will accept call ins, however, once a player no shows, he is no longer allowed to call in, EVER.

For my national events, NO ONE IS PUT ON THE LIST UNTIL THEIR ENTRY FEE IS PAID.

It's been a long time since I ran any tournaments but when I did I would put someone on the list if they called, but only if someone there would pay his entry right then. After that, I didn't care if he showed or not. If he was there when the tournament started, it was all good. If not, he forfeited his entry and couldn't play even if he showed up.

I also wouldn't allow anyone to enter if they showed up late, no excuses. It didn't matter if the tournament had started yet or not. All the guys who were chronically late complained for the first week or two, but after that it was amazing but they always made it there on time.

Having said all that, there isn't really any rules or regulations for a local tournament director. Usually they are doing it on their own time, usually for nothing in return. So, if you don't like how they are running the tournament, then just don't play in it.

How is calling in to sign up "unfair"? As long as the player's entry fee is paid before the draw is made, there's no problem. If the TD is dumb enough to place a player into the draw without the entry fee paid, he'll get burned soon enough and have many questions to answer.

I don`t see why calling/mailing in your attendance is wrong, as long as your there when the tournament starts.

It really comes down to the TD if you ask me and if the tournament has a cap on the field. I go to a tournament where the TD has no control. People call ahead and then no show. The problem is, if you call in and it's already full you move along and then a few people don't show up and you could have actually played.

I don't run tournaments so take my opinion for what it is worth... but I feel that if the person PAYS in advance, they should be allowed to be in the tournament. If they show up late, they lose their first match. If they don't show up at all, their money goes in to the general pool for everyone else.

I wouldn't take a call in without payment in advance though, that just creates all types of problems.

One small tourney that we have used to accept call ins. The board would get filled, people would get turned away and then people wouldn't show.

Always left a hole and a last minute scramble to find players.

Now, you have to pay in advance. No show and you don't get your money back.

So, what used to be convenient was abused and now everyone has to suck shit.

Well let's just say that not everyone has the TD contact info, or their voice mailbox was full. If I show up on time with money in hand, I don't think it's right that I should be turned away because of all the call-ins and they aren't even there yet. Then I get put on a stand by list hoping that someone doesn't show.

I don't see an issue with calling ahead and being paid/ present before the event starts, but I also don't think that someone who is there should be turned away to wait for a caller inner.

I never did it. You had to be there to register and play. Part of the reason for the tournament it to promote the room. You want bodies in the room for as long as possible. Players show up with other people who all spend money. (A pool room is a business) You don't want them just showing up to play and thats it. Not to mention the no show problem. If someone wants to pay for someone else who is not there yet you certainly have to allow that though since the players presence is represented.
