Triangle vs. Layered Tips...

I started out on Elkmasters as a kid then switched to Triangles for the harder hit. In the last decade I went through about 1000 layered tips before realizing there were no perceivable benefits between layered and non-layered tips, only a huge price difference!.

I've switched back to triangles for good and always press them before install. I leave the wall height at about 5/16ths and let them settle down naturally. A tip will last me a couple years because I don't tip pick them or scuff them, just chalk before every shot.

Hope this helps. :)

perception is in the stroke of the beholder.

the 15mm are pretty firm, you don't get any of the bad spongy ones, so i just give a light to medium press for about 10-15 mins. i use a picone press and use the domed piston, so the tip is not flat, it keeps the dome shape.

i tried pressing a bit harder and left them overnight, but they came out too hard for my liking.

I first started to play with Triangle and kept with it for a while and when Sniper became popular, I decided to try it and like it a first but I think they get really hard fast and miscued.

But I'm a weird guy, I go with the sound. Multilayered tips just sound bad in my opinion. It doesn't carry the good 'thunk' that I like to have. I could try a cue and if I don't like the sound im not gonna like it...its all in my head lol. That's why I don't like the modern Schon compared to the old ones.

Triangle is the best.

Miscues........

I switched to Triangles from layered tips. The reason? Miscues!! I have tried almost EVERY layered tip out there, and pound for pound, or dollar for dollar in this case, none can compete! The Triangles reach their compacted shape/feel faster than most/all layered tips that I've tried, and as far as miscues go, it's a no brainer!! For the money, I do not believe there is a better tip out there. JMHO...

For the record I switched to a triangle about 8 months ago and I can't wait to get the thing off.. it's actually cost me a couple matches in the clutch with miscues that were most definately not operator error.

I'll never put another one on my cues again. To me it's just a touch better than a le pro which is god aweful.

I do cue repairs and i've installed more Triangle tips than any other tip in my area. One thing i've noticed is some of the newer Triangle tips aren't as consistent as they were when I first started installing tips. I've had a number of them look good before I installed them and then not shape right and i'd have to cut it off and try another tip. Maybe I just got a bad box or two of Triangle tips plus I don't do near as many tip installations as I used to do. I like the way Triangle tips play and I think I got caught up in the layered tip hype when Moori tips first came out. All I heard was this was the new way to go when you put a tip on your cue. I played with Moori tips for years after that until they changed their firmness or whatever they did. The Moori Slow tips of today are not what the older ones were and they don't play the same to me. I've tried many different tips since I can install my own tips and i've settled on Sniper tips as my tip of choice. However I wouldn't have a problem putting a good Triangle tip on my cue and playing with it until it needed replacing.

Mine mushroomed immensely within a few weeks of having it on.

I personly comprese traingle tips when the time the layer tip not popular.......
I'm quite enjoy to play with it at that time.

A Triangle is the best tip in my honest opinion
If the installation process is correct .
I do believe there is a certain procedure needed for installing them .

Guys;

What's the likelyhood of bootleg tips these days?

I know I was warned a year or two ago, by some big billiard goods suppliers, to watch out for fake mooris which were rampant.

Are triangles supposed to be made in the USA?

I don't think you'd ever have to worry about this.

Why? For the same reason nobody is trying to conterfeit $1 bills... Too much work for too little return.

I used triangles until I bought a shaft from koinnkid for my Schon with a wizard medium on it. Excellent tip.

The only negative I've noticed is you can miscue more so you have to make sure you have it chalked good.

I respectfully disagree. The billiard suppliers were affected quite a bit by this not too long ago and these tips trickled right down to the unsuspecting end users.

Approx $20 for each small round mound of layered leather (or whatever material they were using) seems like it could be a worthwhile endeavor for a counterfeiter.

You are talking about Moori tips. I was talking about Triangle tips in my analogy.

Nobody would try to make a counterfeit Triangle, as they cost less than a dollar.

Moori - different story.

Not true. For years there have been knockoffs of all kinds of products coming from and used in asia. It doesn't have to be a copy of something more expensive like a Moori tip or Rolex watch. If western made Triangles can be made and sold for less than a dollar and there is a profit, then some guy in Hong Kong can make them for pennies and make an even bigger profit.

Picone Press

I checked out the Picone website and saw that there is a 13mm and a 14mm model.

Those of you that are using the 15mm Triangles, are you cutting them down a bit to fit in the 14mm press, or will Picone make a 15mm model, but just doesn't list it on the site???

Thanks again!!!
