Trouble with one pocket

I watched the JJ vs Tony c match and found it boring
almost difficult to watch
I lasted 3 games and
I love one pocket

What is the problem, that the game was so slow and boring

I propose bigger pockets to get more action and a time clock to speed it up

Tight pockets favor the patient perhaps
but it is still pool,4.5 or larger allows the flamboyant player to go for his hole
after all it is pool

I think the game is fun,it is all that I play,i have played and watched the best players alive or dead'Ronnie Allen and I talked about this very thing,so before you tell me that 4 and 1 ,8th pochets separate the men from the boys, remember it is not snooker, running out is just as important as ducking

I couldn't disagree more. One pocket isn't about ducking vs running out its about moving vs running out. There is a big difference between playing safe and moving. I have seen Tony run out plenty on a 4" Diamond when he needed to. One pocket is the only game where the play with weaker shooting ability can come out on top consistently. It doesn't need to be changed for the purpose of entertainment value. I love watching One Pocket and playing it and I enjoy playing it on 4.25" and 4" tables. The game changes completely with 4.5" pockets. Btw most of the accu-stats matches and a lot of big one pocket tournaments are played on 4.25-4.5" pockets.

The game has a lot of value based on the strategy and I would rather watch Tony or Jeremy sinch a kick bank and leave the cueball froze on the end rail than just fire at their hole all the time. JJ and Tony also respect eachothers game and no matter how big the pockets are pros still miss playing one pocket. Knowing that, those guys fire when they can without much risk and maximum reward.

One Pocket is great to play, and I learned a lot about how to play by watching good
players, but... watching it now is like the Chinese Water Torture.

Dale<or Chinese 8 Ball :) >

I have to agree!

Buddy Hall said that "the game shouldn't come down to who shoots the straightest, it should be about who plays the best".

I just got tired of hearing how Tony might shoot this,Tony might shoot that but these tight pockets blah blah blah

I prefer regular size pockets, good shots are still good shots, strategy is not less,it is just different

we don't need to reduce the size of the pockets.it is like basketball..the hoop stays the same,no need to make smaller basket to discourage the 3 point shot

or golf,no need for smaller hole to stop the long put

why reduce the pocket size,if a guy starts playing good

it changes the game by taking certain shots away

doctors are now prescribing u tube one pocket matches for insomniacs.

There's nothing wrong with the game.

It's a game that top players and gamblers play to see who's best.

It's not a game for those with a short attention span. If that's you, go play 9 ball.

The pockets should be tighter not wider.

No shot clock. This is a game of imagination, not expediency.

I agree

Changing the size of the pockets does make the game boring, never see 8 & out. His apology about changing the rim size in basketball tells the who story, this would ruin the NBA just like 4" pockets will ruin pool !

i agree as well but in all games on the table & get table speed knocked down a notch!

the criticism from me comes from a player who loves the game
I have played Jersey Red,Ronnie Allen,Cliff,Richie ,Fats .bustamonte and others

I am not their speed but I enjoy matching up
and I like sweating the game

my thoughts are that the game with all its strategy and moves is wonderful, but going for banks and long straight in shots is also part of the game

all I am saying is that tight pockets unnecessarily tightens the game up

and all the slow play is unnessary as well

chess is a more complicated game andthey use a shot clock

and most of the over time consuming slow play is gamesmanship

I will bet I can pick the shot before each turn in 10 seconds or 30 at the most
and so can most of the players

most of the up and down stuff is gamesmanship,
most watch Efren and he is still the best

What??? Never see 8 and out? What the hell does that have to do with playing or watching a great game of one pocket?

Did you notice that a billiard table doesn't have any pockets and it's interesting to those who enjoy the game.

If you want to see balls run ... there are games designed for that, and they are great games in their own right as well.

Chess is a great game. Many people love it so much they can sit and ponder moves along with the players for hours.

It's all about enjoying games for what they, are not for trying to reinvent them into something other games that you enjoy more offer.

I never meant to imply that 8 and outs were uncommon
it is the restricing of the difficult shots

a player is less like to attempt a long hard shot or certain lower percentage shots

in my opinion tight pockets are changing the game in a way similar to what happened to two shot roll outin 9 ball

actually I am not speaking about changing the game, but resoring it

I probably sound like a hypocrite as I have always liked pool rooms with different kinds of equipment, I liked to play tougher equipment to slow down aggressive players or if I was getting a huge spot I preferred tables where running out was next to impossible

in the rare cases where I was giving up weight ,I liked loose tables to make sure I did not hang the money ball for the poor player

I guess I just prefer to see 4.5 or 4.75 pockets to encourage players to go for their hole. I must also confess I can't play a lick with tight pockets,i guess they scare me and bring out the dog in me

so...are we really going to make generalizations about the game, based on a single match? And one with jj playing, too?

He's notoriously slow, painfully so. Not that we have any right to tell him how to play...

If you are gonna watch him play, there's gonna be a lotta down time.

In my mind smaller pockets are a cop out. It makes it easier to take balls out, allows for mistakes and not have the other player score. It also lets you play more sloppy because you are not as afraid of the other player scoring due to the tight pockets. A good safety is anything up table.

Yea, and if you played on a 7 footer it would also go faster.

I'm not that good and if run 9 and out a few times on 4.25 pockets.
I'll agree though it can get boring at times to watch. But so is baseball
