I would expect a few are. I have 3/6 customers who are a husband/wife teams doing long distance who I hear from every couple months --- not sure that they play much pool on route. And have done customs for atleast 2 other guys who drive long distance.

I have been selling heavy trucks & trailers for 15 years and have encoutered many Owner Operators that enjoy pool, but have never encountered any that could play very well. I'm sure there are some though.

It seems that with the current laws regarding hours of service that we may very well have some up and coming players that are also truckers. With the cost of operating today and per mile rates barely higher than they were in the 80's most truckers have to really hump it to make a living. No time for an addiction like pool. :D

Used to be a real good one from Northern Cal we called "Wino". His real name was Richard Winesettle. He ran all over the country in the 70's and 80's hauling loads in his semi and playing pool.

I have been beaten by a few truckers over the years. Also by a plumber, gardener, electrician, x-ray tech and a couple quadriplegics. Wait is there a pattern here?
:(

Truck Driver

In Ohio we had Kenny "The Trucker" McCoy he drove for Kroger and when I was younger we would hear stories that he was the best player in Ohio 1970's-early 80's. Jay Helfert or anyone else, did he play that good to be favorite over guys like Spaeth, Vickery, McCannich, Hynes, etc. Everyone in the poolroom said he was the Ohio roadblock. Any story would be appreciated

YES he did! Kenny and Chuck Morgan from W. Virginia were the most feared players around, along with Joey Spaeth. Kenny was probably the best of the bunch.

Sorry Tim.

In Austin Texas I believe there is a guy named Mark Church that used to drive a truck. He is a strong A player or at least he used to be. I don't live in Texas no more so maybe someone else has heard of him.

Pool Playing Truckers

I am not officially a Driver though I have had my CDL since 1975. I have known truck drivers who were good pool players but I don't think I have known a driver who would be considered "REALLY GOOD" by the standards touted on this forum.
I play ok but am NO match for some of the names being tossed about here.

My web site caters to pool and dart players in the transportation industry and I tend to agree with one of the previous posters here that if you want to be a "REALLY GOOD driver" that will almost certainly take so much of your time that you will not be able to achieve the status of "REALLY GOOD POOL PLAYER" as well.

A few exceptions will exist though so let hear about them and we can all applaud!

Isn't there a truck driver from Redding? :)
There used to be, but I heard last weekend when I was visiting in Redding that they had all moved out...

Mark Church still plays a little. He throttled me at a local Sunday night tourney a while back. Not sure what he does for a job though.

Buster Merchant (Even though he isn't an AZBer)
I sure wish he'd find a job locally so I'd have more time to learn from him. He says he doesn't shoot on the road, though.

Truck Driver Kenny certainly could play. I used to see him in Johnston City. He would sometimes wear those gas station attendant clothes.

Buster Merchant is a great friend and is a heavy equipment operator now in Greenville, Miss. He used to drive big trucks and,,,,,,,,,,,like me,,,,,,,,,made a ton of cash on the road. Many truck stops have bar tables. It used to be so easy. Buster probably still has his class-A CDL but again like me doesn't use it any longer.

Taking a look, I notice I need to renew mine pretty soon.

Cool Bill!
This reminds me of a TV commercial we see running here in Southern California where the guy has his SSAN in giant letters on the side of a truck and he is advertising his company's ability to protect your personal information from identity theft.

Guess you aren't worried about that huh?
