Trunk pops open

Any car experts? My daughter's 2001 Altima's trunk just pops open by itself. It was open in the driveway. Closed it, drove 2 min., pops open while driving.

These cars have the lever, when pulled up= opens the trunk. Pushed down , it opens gas cap.
The lever does not open the trunk since she bought it a few years ago.
Auto body looked at it, and couldn't figure it out.
 
Does it have a remote with a trunk release button on it,maybe the button is stuck,i would take the battery out of the remote if it has one,also there might be a fuse you could take out of the car if its got a power trunk which most cars do and i suspect this one does to as its releasing,if removing the battery from the remote isnt the problem then disconnect the power from the trunk either by a fuse or wiring,then just use a key to open it from now on,my suggestions but not a fix,sorry. :cool:
 
There should be 2,3, or 4 screws on the trunk latch. Before you lossen them to adjust it look for signs of marks from where it moved from. Johnnyt

She does not have a remote for the car, she never got one. I also suspected the key, which has the chip. But i will check the nissan link for clues.

Well if it has the keyfob then perhaps Nissan can reprogram it for you and the problem then might be solved,damn machines!,the more moving parts and the more technology it seems things get harder to fix and more parts that fail. :)
 
I just went out to find trunk open again. Close it, put key in ignition, as soon as I start car, trunk opens. Did this several times with same result.
I pulled antitheft fuse out, still same thing.
I want to check the antitheft relay next, and look into the lever. Maybe there is a switch in the lever that is stuck, if there is a switch. I thoght that these pulls are just cables. Let you know what happens.
 
It sounds like the problem is the latch. To check, just have someone pull the trunk release switch with the trunk open. If there's little or no movement in the latch then you'll need to replace it or fix it. Sometimes it just gets stuck and you just need to force it a little and it'll work fine again.

Will the trunk open if you simply pull on it?
Will it open if you use the key?
Is there ever a time it stays closed and won't open?

Wont open if u pull on it.
opens with the key.
Noticed after I start car, it opens, then close it and stays shut. Shut off car, come back it is open again. Ctrazy crap. Yesterday openend while driving.

Hmm...there's only three possible ways for the trunk to open. The first is via the trunk release cable. The second would be by some kind electric latch (your car might have one). And the third would be a malfunctioning latch. Should the problem be electric (which it sounds like), just pull the plug on the latch, problem solved. I don't think it could be the cable which I think is cut somewhere since the lever has never worked and the latch sometimes stays closed. If the problem is the latch itself, replace it...otherwise, I'd have to take a look. But surely there is a competent mechanic in your area (although sometimes there aren't).
 
Well i just tried again same problem. I took the trim off around latch and pulled the plug. So far it hasn't open.
I think it might be a short or just a bad actuator. Right now just happy it does open by itself.

since this topic has zero to do with pool, i will ask you something i have wondered for along time, the girls in your avitar, which one is your favorite from left to right, I was just in Brasil and there were 100's of girls like that on the beach....amazing. Brasil gives Thailand the 5 out and the breaks.
 
Not LilJohn, but his is my favorite avator here. lol. My favorite was always the 4th from the left, because of the pose she was in. But looking more closely now, I think the 2nd from the left might have more natural talent.

Try disconnecting the neg battery lead and then reconnecting; this deletes the intermittent problem file in the on board computer. Worth a try. Everybody should do this with these new fangled cars before spending $$$ on a mechanic...hope this helps...:)

Any time. Since your daughter doesn't have the remote, then it won't even matter that the plug is out. I have pulled several plugs on my car to prevent some of the "luxurious options" from functioning.

I did that actually, and changed her battery becuase it wasn't holding charge very well, it was also undersized.
