Tuesday Open Thread: Sky v. Alex and Efren v. Jose

sjm as much as I respect your opinion you really have not seen Sky play much lately.

That's fair, but I'll enjoy watching Sky this week. Please let me catch up. Perhaps Sky is further along than I think and I just haven't been lucky enough to be there when he's playing his very best.

I'm keeping an open mind and, to add to that, I'm rooting for him to succeed.

I've been watching the Mosconi eight at every opportunity, and I stick with my original assessment. Of the five open spots, three should be locks based on performance, and that is SVB, Bergman and Woodward. I would like to see an assessment of all 8's finishes this year, and see who has the resume.

Good assessment but Woodward isn't part of the Mosconi 8.

I would like Max Eberle to be on the team next year, providing his does well 2014-2015. He seems like a genuinely nice guy and would be great for team chemistry. Joe Rogan speaks highly of him. Plus he seems like a brand new player after coming back from his training in the Philippines. His mental game has definitely jumped some margins seeing that he defeated Feijen, one of the toughest mentalists in the game. I know one game doesn't mean anything, but I still think he would be a good addition to the team next year.

Well, if you are going to include those not selected by Mark, you better put Dechaine in the mix. Mike has won about seven titles in the Northeast this year, came 6th in the DCC nine ball including a win over Shane, came 9th in the last US Open, won the Canadian Open 9-ball and the Ginky Memorial, beating Immonen in each of those events, and at Turning Stone he beat both Shane and Hohmann. Mike also beat Appleton in the CSI 10-ball event. If you are watching the US Open stream right now, they're talking of Chinakov, a fine player, as if he's a superstar of the highest order, but Dechaine gave him the seven at Derby City and beat him.

Woodward doesn't have wins like those on his resume.

Very true. If 7 of 8 would line up to play Mike with the window open, I would take that week off to bet these matches. Other Than Shane I think Bergman has the next best chance to beat Mike but I'm still betting on Mike. I think the 2nd best rotation player in America Title isn't even close

Not saying guys like Bergman and Woodward can't beat Mike, even in a long race, but they aren't the favorite. All three of them are wonderful players.

Yes, I've really been impressed by Sky this year but I haven't seen him punish the caliber of players that Mike has for a LONG period of time. I do think Sky will be an American elite in the next few years but it's hard to make him a favorite over Mike at the present time..... Same for Bergman

well we get a chance to see Bergman vs Dechaine play next should be a good match

Sing it loud. He's Sky and we're proud. Sing it loud. He's Sky and we're proud.

Sky Woodward for 2014 Team USA!

JAM, you do realized that all the caterwauling in the world here is not going to change things for this year and is in fact unfair to those chosen as this year's 8 finalists, and generally counterproductive to what MW is trying to achieve?

Why not wait until after the MC to start cheerleading for proposed team members for the next year?

The rack and breaking rules are frustrating. It's akin to watching a golf tournament where the pros can't tee off with their drivers. Makes literally no sense at this level.

Well, I guess I made another mistake ( the latest in a long line). I thought Woodward was in the eight being considered. If not, then this is a moot point.
I agree SJM, Mike Dechaine is very deserving of being considered for the Mosconi based on talent and performance. It seems to be generally agreed that he is the second best American rotation player.

Lou, we all know these are pipe dreams. We're just having fun. Very entertaining US Open so far.

li he wen leading mike davis 7-2 at the moment. davis is not playing very well. btw the commentary in this one is not so stellar. Usually I like mark wilson and i've never heard billy gibbs before but it seems like they dont even know who li he wen is, saying things like "this guy must play all the time to know a shot like that" and alluding to him like he'ssome underground chinese monster, which anybody who really knows pool knows about wen's resume

Yeah, the guy came within a rack of being World 9-ball champion.
