Tuesday Open Thread: Sky v. Alex and Efren v. Jose

Sky breaks the ball, makes the wing ball...

ky breaks and makes the wing ball again -- and the 2-ball....

ky breaks. Cut break, wing ball drops, and he's on his way to the infamous hill....

...Sky breaks, makes the wing ball, but he gets snookered. A 6-game cushion is nice for Sky, though....

Alex reaches for his jumpcue and proceeds to break the balls. Makes the wing ball and the 1 ball -- makes 3 balls on the break.....

Interesting development -- if they have already figured out how to make the wing ball with the 9 on the spot.

Thanks for the updates Jam.

I'm working today and doing a lot of driving but getting updates at every stop.

Will rep you later!! Nice play by play btw...

Gary

My pleasure, Gary. It sure was fun to watch. I can't wait to see Sky again. :p

I was repeating what the commentators said. Now, did anybody else who watched this match hear them say the wing ball went in? I heard it multiple times. I'm not kidding.

Yes, one of them kept saying wing ball when it was the 1 ball. Johnnyt

So what does that mean? There was no wing ball that went in, yet the commentators said a wing ball went in?

Truth be told, I had trouble ascertaining which ball was which. The colors on my computer monitor were difficult to figure out. :embarrassed2:

If Skylar is not on the Mosconi Cup team, we need a new Captain

That's ridiculous. Skylar's resume in rotation games is far less impressive than several of the guys chosen. Shane -- obviously. Bergman's resume is much, much stronger in rotation pool, and includes a win over one of the toughest fields of the year at Hard Times, in which he beat Carlo Biado in the final. Sossei came 7th in the last US Open, has won a title on the Joss Tour this year and has a win over Shane in 10-ball this year on the big tables.

Skylar's day will come on the Mosconi Cup team, for he's a great player. Still, his inclusion is far from crystal clear and to suggest that any captain choosing to exclude him is out of line is absurd.

It doesn't get any better than this. Wow!

Alex is a veteran champion and has no fear in front of the camera. It will be interesting to see how Sky handles this kind of pressure. This is Sky's first Open.

Most know there is a wee bit of rivalry between Jose and Efren. IMO, Jose is, indeed, the leader of the Filipino Invasion, but Efren has received much more accolades than Jose Parica. There is a tension here. When Jose beat Efren in a California tournament about 10 years ago or so, he did not hide his glee. :D

This will be the match of the century. Efren is in dead-punch stroke right now, playing in many events. I have not heard much about Jose in recent times. Who do you like?

Efren. There is an accustats video of Efren beating Jose in the DCC one pocket and Efren didn't hide his glee either.

I don't have a favorite, I like to watch both of them play but as you correctly said, Efren has been playing a lot in big events and should be in stroke.

I agree. Sky for Team USA this year. He's already demonstrated he can hang with world champions.

This "he's only a bar table player" image that people keep painting on him needs to stop.

Sky is a thoroughbred American champion, and we all need to stand up and support him.

Sky for Team USA! Sky for Team USA. Sky for Team USA.

I agree, I watched Justin play Carlo on the live stream. That table played tough and Justin did what he had to do to win. That was an impressive match for sure.

Skylar plays well, but he isn't a world beater just yet.

Edit - If Sky pull out some huge wins at the open, other than Alex P, I'd change my vote and say put him on the Mosconi team.

You've named Shane, Bergman, and Sossei, and I agree they should be locks to get on the team. But you need to get to five - are there two more who are clearly better than Sky?

I see your point but I think it's too late to worry about this year.
Actually I like Sky over Sossei

Yes..the wing ball was going in with the 9 on the spot. The one ball was also going in the side pocket. Those were the only balls that were going in directly. Anything else made on the break was via a kick.

Also, if you are watching, the physical 'spot' has been moved up an inch or 2 so that the one ball is placed directly upon it while the nine is then at the intersection of the midline and the second diamonds. Furthermore, there is a tiny "x" where the nine ball sits (the traditional 'spot') in case the 9 ball is made on the break in the lower 2 pockets and needs to be spotted.

No, Sky is in the discussion for who is next best behind those three, who I agree should be locks.

I'd favor Deuel over Sky , but Sky is on a par with guys like Hall, Shuff, and Domiguez. Sky would have to be favored over Schmidt right now.

Of course, a deep run by Sky this week will have me singing a different tune. Wishing him the best.

I say again, Woodward is better than everyone else on that list with the exception of SVB and maybe Bergman. If you don't know that, you haven't been paying attention.

Hear, hear, and well said! Skyler for 2014 Team USA. We need him.

Respect your opinion. Of course, part of the beauty of the US Open is that we may get to see some of these guys playing each other. By the way, I agree that Bergman is second best of the "Mosconi 8."
