Tulipwood for joint collars?

Im building a pretty cool cue thats tulipwood handle and African blackwood forearm and buttsleeve. Im thinking about doing my first ivory joint, but id like to use tulipwood for the joint collars. Ive seen tulipwood joints and I have seen several Scruggs sneakys with tulipwood buttcaps, but I heard they were very prone to cracking. Maybe I should sleeve the tulipwood over phenolic, or juma? Anyone have any bad experiences with tulipwood joint collars? Thanks.

They crack very easily. I would mount them, with no press, on phenolic ring like you might ivory.
 
Do we know why they're cracking? Is it because the tulipwood is "moving" (swell / shrink) or because there is some physical stress put on them to cause them to crack.....

Like many dense woods it is somewhat brittle and the cracking is from stress. Impregnating or simply installing with no press on phenolic works just fine.
 
Well, i ended up sleeving over Juma. I decided against the ivory joint because this cue is already heavy as hell. I made it a 60 inch cue, and even though its cored, it still weighs 21.6 ounces. I drilled out the butt for weight bolts and left it empty to try and shed some weight, but it didnt help too much. Lol. It hits pretty good though, it has a real nice tone, as i expected these woods would have. Anyway, heres some pics of how i sleeved it. The last pic is the joint collar for the shaft. Thanks for the input fellas.

can tell you dont work much
cleanest fingernails on a cuemaker i ever saw :thumbup:
 
Almost done. Just a couple more coats and some sanding.

Very nice. Wish I could finish that good,lol. Are the rings white/green/white ?? Hard to tell from an angle on my computer.
