I have to side with Blue Hog ridr on this one.
It might be in bad taste to call names....
But trying to make money on a grieving family?.....seriously.
It would've been more tactful to stream the benefit, give away copies to those family members that wanted them, and then sell the rest, maybe stating that "DVD's of the benefit will cost $25(instead of $20 or whatever the original cost of a DVD might be) with a portion of the proceeds going to the family." Keep $5 from every copy SOLD. After all, editing DVDs is a little time consuming, and being that you are broke, as you say, your time should be worth $5
If you would state that $20 out of every DVD sold would go to the family, I'm sure that you would sell quite a few and if you sold 100 DVDs, you would've made $500, take away the cost of the blank DVDs food and fuel, and you may have broke even on only 100 DVDs. Sell 500 DVDs and you made some money AND donated a hell of alot to the family. You couldve been a 'profitable hero' after all was said and done.....well, not really after seeing all the other stuff that unfolded after Jay made his original post....but I think people see what I'm getting at here.
People aren't as stupid as you think they are. If handled properly from the get-go, I bet you would've had alot of supporters and sales would be good. Even Jay may have handled your fiasco a little better. Hell, he may have waited a whole 6 months before airing the dispute here.
But instead, you preach from your pedestal about how you are being crucified over something that wasnt your fault and play the part of the victim.
Be a man about the entire situation. Apologize to Jay, and let those chips fall where they will.
Don't try to leech of a grieving family. Give to them in their time of need and they will come back to you in their time of want.
None of this is business...Its common sense.
