U.S Team Message To The Public

Why should the fans have to fix the game?

The disconnect between some pro players and the general fan in the US is growing at a pretty alarming rate. I suspect the fans will find something else to be interested in but what will the players do?

A few people better get their head out of their ass or its going to be pretty ugly in this country for anyone trying to make a living playing, promoting or selling pool.

It also has to do with what is being promoted and approved from Kevin Trudeau forward that will cause the further disconnect.

I think most of the AZ posters here are missing the point with this whole MC thing and Charlie Williams as captain.

Lets back up a couple months or so.

This all started when Charlie was announced as Team USA captain. Upon hearing this all the fans (who in my opinion, are very knowledgeable with the underground aspects of the sport), voiced their displeasure. The amount of negativity that came afterwards was eye opening to say the least. This backlash immediately put Charlie and team USA under heat. Its not rocket science that he had been nominated for this post by his pals, who happened to be the senior statesmen on team USA.

Now the only way to justify their actions was to win the cup back – otherwise they would all have to look at themselves in the mirror and accept responsibility for their actions. This was a form of pressure, coupled with the firepower and heat that team Europe put on them right from the beginning, that they had not taken into account.
This is where it all went sideways. The brain trust with team USA did not expect the backlash from their actions and did not handle the added pressure well at all. I saw their faces close up and all of them looked like they were playing for their lives out there. We all know the most successful approach in professional caliber pool is to play like it means nothing when it means everything. Just follow Shane’s example of success, he is the best player right now to epitomize that philosophy – when he plays for himself.

I believe that team USA has all the ammunition it needs they just need to believe in each other and have a guiding light that takes pressure off them as opposed to placing it squarely on their shoulders. The key is to go out and have fun with the event again, like they used to when they dominated it. In team play you have to embrace the moments and the highs and lows together, that’s where the bonding takes place.

Just another opinion you understand……..

Not all of the fans voiced their displeasure....

Hypothetically speaking, how many people on this Forum would like to own a piece of Team USA if the team became a Franchise.

Hypothetically again if Team USA were to have a market value of $1,000,000 would you invest $1000 for a share in the Business. Would another 999 people follow suit.

Then the owners could get a level playing field on par with the European setup. The European squad including fringe players are exposed to Johan's presence throughout the year. This allows him to command the respect of the players.

Right now, Team USA has nobody to whom they have to answer - except Matchroom or AZB posters. As a result poor performances are going unchecked.

A fan based ownership would surely create a sense of patriotism. Maybe it's the way to secure a halt to what could be a diminishing interest in One Horse Races

Sounds to me like you guys should join an APA league . I mean you already got names like in the movie Mystery men. Mike- the young fire that kept energy up . Shawn- masterof special shots.[my fav]. Rodney -spirit of team keeping hopes high. etc you get my point . nah probably not.

Every time I see a DP or an ABP press release...

1)charlie coached usa to its first ever mosconi cup loss on usa soil.

Hate to tell you this but we lost in 2007 to Europe.. on USA soil..

2007: Europe 11-8 USA (MGM Grand Hotel, Las Vegas)
Europe: Ralf Souquet (Germany), Niels Feijen (Holland), Konstantin Stepanov (Russia), Daryl Peach (England), Tony Drago (Malta)
USA: Johnny Archer, Rodney Morris, Earl Strickland, Corey Deuel, Shane Van Boening

FWIW, I'd rather not see CW as captain either!!

Hearing these points, I respectfully disagree.

Backing up a few months or so means that team USA had plenty of time to hear the fans' concerns and to gather the strength, grit, and resolve to rally together to play their absolute best. Fans' concerns and anger could have been the swift kick in the pants for the team to think clearly, identify strengths, and work on anything that might have hindered them.

All that response and stewing time really can help- it creates the need for a good, assessing look at the hill that needs climbing, a plan of attack, some strengthening and planning of skills and opportunites, and the resolve to make the game plan work together. A good captain would have set the team stage and fostered the needed mental tools for that.

If he was at all good at PR, he also should have sent out an early press release to the fans saying something like this quick draft: "We hear and understand the concerns raised by our fans, and we see these as direct challenges to prove our stengths and to make all Americans proud of us as we work hard together. We hope that we will be able to prove these concerns to be rational but unfounded, and we hope that we will have your support as we face our opponents on the table on your behalf." Now THAT would have made me stop and cheer.

The game plan and the trust in each other is really the guiding light. I don't believe that the key is to go out and have fun- the Key is to mentally and physically prepare, and then to go out and Do Work.

They shouldn't have looked like they were playing for their lives. That stress goes away when you've prepared and you have trust in yourself and each other. If we had seen a strong, confident, unified team that worked hard and smart, still lost, and then was gracious and caring towards each other, the opponents, and the fans- the backlash wouldn't be so angry at all.

As another draft, the ending PR should have been, "Team Europe played very well, and we congratulate them on their well- played victory. For our own part, we learned many lessons, and going forward, we clearly see that there are areas where we can improve. As a captain, I have personally grown and I want nothing more than to gain redemption in the future. I believe in each and every one of our team, our country's players, and I hope that I will have the opportunity to help Team USA gain redemption with a victory in 2012. I further hope to use these next months to create a stronger force for that event." something like that.

Fine. I'm done daydreaming.

Mosconi Team

I didn't have faith in Charlie Williams being captain either, you see, I remember seeing him on the Mosconi Team, and the easy 6 ball he missed that cost him the match, and put the team in a bad situation.

Well said!

Plenty of interesting thoughts and opinions in this thread...

Sadly, the only thing that DP and the ABP seem to be capable of doing is posting "press releases" in a feeble attempt at damage control.

I'm anticipating a lackluster response in the near future from an unidentified poster using the 'ABPPros' handle...

You cannot dispel the negative baggage of this team no matter how well crafted the news release. Besides, few want to hear a happy sappy by gosh we learned so much we're going to do better next time for the good ol' USA. Would it have been better than what they actually put out? No doubt. But it would still not be sufficient reason to cheer.

What does it matter anyway?

Matchroom does not appear to care. CW isn't going to step aside. They're not going to find a way to get players, like DH, that the vast majority of American fans want to see on their team to cheer on. And guess what: next year it will be the same half-assed attempt at cohesiveness as a team. Getting up early and playing a couple of games of tennis ain't exactly like attending the US Olympic Training Center for six months. It is a joke.

One of the best things fans can do to show disproval of someone a brand are sponsoring is not to buy their product and to go one step further...tell them why. If you cut off the money train to the bad apples they will rot into the sunset. Johnnyt

Naaawww, they stay away from here like the plague is here ! But don't stop supporting them. Just stop with your opinions and good advice. Thats what they don't want to hear. They know what is better, lol. They must all be in the top 10 on the money list. NOT.

Who decided that CW would be a better choice than Varner? That's insane.

Dorabelle I spoke with varner last night and all I can say is he is first class. We are best friends and he always trys to stay positive about things and he did seem a little disappointed about some of the comments that the players made about previous captains. He still feels that he should have been Captain and hopes to return to that position in 2013 and further Mosconi Cups.He has my vote for sure and i will be back to supporting the event, however anymore of Charlie Williams and I will be boycotting the mosconi cup and will make sure that everyone i know to never buy any products from the companies that sponsor or support the players and charlie aka predator, poison, etc.

JCIN is spot on!

after 30 years of being into pool, playing in events, running tournys, buying and selling cues, I sadly find myself looking for something else to do lately. All the BS about CW and his stranglehold on all things pro pool make me sick! CW was a tool when I met him 15 years ago at Classics billiards here in PA.....and he has not changed one bit.

I love the game and play every day here at home, but as far as going to big events to support the cause?....not with the way the pros are acting at the moment.

I hope TAR keeps doing their matches....it is the ONLY thing that keeps me interested really.

G.

Gerry, I wouldn't call CW a tool. A tool is something used to get the job done !

To me he is more like when you cast you line for fishing and you get a big backlash and you line is all knotted up. So it's like now what do I do.
Thats the way he plays imo. Up down up down up down stalling for time to think of what to do next is the way I see it.
So if I am right is this captain material ?

Funny as hell

Matchroom dosn't need to do shit. it is their event, they change the rules to get what they want. Frankly ALLLLL of the American players want to make the team for a SIMPLE pay day, without having to fork out any money. All of them are financially motivated and only care about making money.

CW only cares about self promotion, SP only cares about being on TV and walks around bragging about how many times he has been on ESPN. MD, well not much to say about that train wreck. RM is just out of touch and I think he would be a phenomenal motivating coach. SVB & JA is the only ones who cares about WINNING.

Everyone else who was there were there to show off and get free money, and 90% of the others who were in the HUNT to make the team only cared about making money.

I know each and everyone of them personally, and I have heard MANY conversations about making the Mosconi team and every-time the money is their biggest motivation.

Let's face it, it is Matchroom sports event, and NO ONE can tell them how to run their event or how to have players qualify for their event. Frankly, they can just pick and choose who they want and NOT go off from the points list. It is their event, governed by their producers and network executives. There is no governing body, so all of this *****ing about Matchroom sports is completely absurd.

1) Although I can read between the lines and appreciate the sentiment, this press release could be far better

2) Matchroom Sports: Please give us upfront information as to the selection criteria AND how our captain is decided. It's a mystery to your fan base and nearly feels "back-doored". The Euro team is decided differently than the US? REALLY?

3) The US team played their asses and hearts off, we just got beat. Next year!!!

4) We can go off and blame Charlie all we want, but one of my points is - HOW is our captain picked? HOW is our team picked?

MATCHROOM CHANGES SELECTION CRITERIA EVERY DAMN YEAR!

Some structure/uniformity please....

You are absolutely right.

[Everything else I said here was mean- spirited, and I have since edited it out.]

Tap tap... exactly my thoughts as well. The ABP and pros (as a whole) can all pound sand and NONE of them really have any relevance anymore since there is no pro tour UNLESS they step up to the TAR BOX and BET SOMETHING.

I hate to say it, but unless it's a major event like the US Open 9ball, US Open 10ball or a World Championship, who cares who wins what--- it doesn't matter. There's no pro tour hence there are no pros--- only a bunch of REALLY REALLY talented guys trying to make a living off of sea shells (as fatty would say) and strutting around like they're Tiger Woods or Luke Donald when in fact they're less famous than than most PGA tour caddies.

Therefore... as the dust settles..... there stands TAR. Two men enter...one man smashes his cue... while the other leaves. Nothing REALLY matters except majors and heads-up big $ action matches. Everything else is noise and a distraction.

You're absolutely right: it is Matchroom's event and they can do what they want. But... that doesn't mean American pool fans will or should support what they do -- the players can still collect their dough and they should be happy with that, I guess. Because, if a Mosconi Cup is held in the forest and no one in this country gives a flying, well, you know the rest :-)
