I myself am going to get down to 165 and play in the junior welterweight 14.1 world championship which will follow the Nathans Hot Dogs 14.1 world championship and precede the Vivid Video 14.1 reverse cowgirl world championship.
Grady said:I can't go to Maryland to play in the Straight Pool there because of family commitments. It says on the flyer for that event that the top two finishers will qualify for what I think Dragon Promotions cals a World Straight Pool Championship. That's all I know except that last year I tried to get an invite but failed.

JAM said:It was reported by some players who were in attendance last year that the playing conditions were not up to par -- poor lighting, water leaking from the roof onto the tables, extraordinarily long wait times between matches resulting in players having to compete at 2:00 and 3:00 a.m., and favoritism given to selected players to compete at convenient times when others had to stand by for hours on end.
Why not produce your own 14.1 tournament and show the pool world what a straight-pool tournament is supposed to be like. You certainly have many more years of experience in this arena, and there just may be a sponsor who would provide you the means to make this happen.
As they say in the movie "Field of Dreams, build it and they will come. I don't think you would have any problem making this a reality if you decide you would like to tackle something like this.
It is curious how one person can pick and choose who they want to compete in tournaments and then leave competent and qualified players by the wayside.

But this is not an American tournament except for the fact that it is held in the US. It is the WPA World Championship. I assume that the WPA sets most of the player selection criteria. It is usual for the tournament organizer, and sometimes the local national member of the world organization (which would be the BCA/UPA in this case), to have some spots (wild cards) that they can choose.corvette1340 said:That is just the American way. corvette1340 said:That is just the American way. The person putting on the tournament should be able to pick and choose whomever they want to play in the tournament if it is by invitation. If it is advertised as OPEN then everyone can play but if it is an invitational tournament then I'm not quite sure what you are griping about.
corvette1340 said:Why don't you get sponsors and put on an invitational and invite Keith, Grady, and all of their friends and leave Charlie out?
JAM said:And I'm not quite sure why my post warrants a response by you as saying that I am griping. I am simply providing a blessed opinion, like most do on this forum. You see it as griping; I see it as stating my opinion based on the facts which I mentioned.
Truthfully, I don't think Keith would be interested in competing in a 14.1 tournament. However, there are some renown great 14.1 players who are deserving and worthy for consideration. Allen Hopkins' name comes to mind, and let's not forget Mike Zuglan, a 14.1 phenom. Remember him? I sure do.

Grady said:I'm trying now to finalize location and sponsors for One Pocket and Straight Pool. But honestly, I'm hard pressed to ask why I shouldn't bar UPA players since nobody stands up for the Harrimans, the McCreadys and the Mathews'.
I went through this last year. It's easy to open up an event and have a true World Championship. 128 players or just have it open, not any hand picked cronies.
Noone who is qualified with talent (like my friend Blackjack) or credentials should have to sit at home, even if the conditions are less than perfect.
I really hate to be the one to say and do this but Charlie Williams and the UPA need to be watched. They're dangerous, IMHO.
corvette1340 said:Im sure there are a lot of people that deserve invites, but the fact remains that the person in charge of getting sponsors and putting on the tourney has the power. I would personally like to see Mike Templeton get an invite, but so far he hasn't either.
JAM said:Is Mike Templeton a renown 14.1 pool player? I did not know that.
What's a joke is to label a tournament as a "world championship" straight pool tournament and have a player roster consisting of pool players who haven't been playing straight pool for more than a year or two.
The "power," as you put it, was granted to an unknown entity by another unknown entity who worked for the BCA several years ago. When things got tough, one unknown entity jumped ship and left another player holding the bag with no funds and no means to continue.
I don't see anything wrong with an invitational tournament at all, but I do think it is ridiculous to call it a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 14.1 POOL TOURNAMENT when the competitors are a little green in the 14.1 department. Why not include actual, living, 14.1 pool champions who have existing titles to back up their skills set in the game of straight pool? Makes sense to me! JMHO, FWIW.
And by the way, just because I express an opinion about a topic, please don't bring my boyfriend's name into the picture. I didn't mention one word about Keith playing in a 14.1 tournament. You seem like a trouble-maker who likes to stir the pot.

I also heard that they carry chinese stars and nun-chucks, so the watch group would definitely need a leader with street credentials. If you are reading this Dragon, the word is out amigo. Your reign of terror on the pool community will soon be over.
