US Open and Mosconi coming to ESPN

ESPN doesn't have any pool experts! (-:
I think it's important to ESPN that they don't have to pay any experts. Also, they don't have to pay for any production if they use Matchroom's stream. I suppose it's possible ESPN got the stream for free. The benefit to Matchroom is that they get a lot more eyeballs in the US.

The previous ESPN deal for pool that I heard of was that if you had produced a program, ESPN would show it twice with some of your ads, and after that the video was theirs.

Can't wait for Pat McAfee to get involved.
I don’t know if you’re kidding or not but I would love for someone like him to get involved. Like him or not do you know how many viewers who are new or don’t much about the game would get their on our biggest event? I think it would be a huge push for the game.

Here is perspective I think some people are missing about Mosconi being on ESPN plus. I am a fan of WWE and they are also on ESPN plus. During the week of a PLE (Premium Live Event), various WWE talent do interviews during a number of the ESPN shows. Usually the first hour of the PLE is live on either ESPN or ESPN 2 and then the rest of the show is on ESPN plus. As people has stated, ESPN plus is their streaming platform and here is why it makes sense to be on streaming. No time constraints. Your show can be 2 hours and 15 minutes, or 2 hours and 45 minutes. With traditional ESPN, you have to stick to a predetermined timeframe, unless your MLB or the NFL. The last time pool was on ESPN, it was all recorded to fit into a timeslot. Back in the day, WWE was on pay per view and had a "hard out time" where as now, they don't. They can go whatever time they want. That is why it makes sense for Mosconi to be on the streaming platform. Can you image the week of Mosconi Cup players like Jayson Shaw, Joshua Filler, SVB, and Fedor being on ESPN First Take with Stephen A Smith? I think the ESPN deal could be more then just showing the even on their streaming channel, it could be promotion too. If that is the case, then it is more mainstream promotion pro pool has ever got in the US. And for those that will "just wait to watch in free on YouTube", you may not be able to watch the full event on YouTube afterwards. You maybe be able to see highlights, but not the full event per the new agreement.

This is going to be on ESPN+, not ESPN. How is that any different than than any other streaming service? I think it's $40 a month.
I'll wait & watch it on Youtube free.

I believe if you already get ESPN through your cable subscription, you can watch ESPN+ for free on the ESPN app

I'm looking forward to this as an ESPN subscriber. I do follow the major events on YouTube where available, but think the ESPN platform will have some added features. I've yet to watch the WNT on DAZN so can't compare to that.

They need to invite a team from Norway! The fans all rowing and screaming would be very entertaining.

Great news either way now I might watch it, instead of the YouTube reruns…

Bingo. There will be interviews, and there will be ads. They may actually even pay an expert or two to talk about it.

I have ESPN and ESPN2 through Dish Network and cannot get ESPN+. You have to have Disney, Hulu+ or ESPN Select/Unlimited.
Oh- I wasn’t aware of that. I wish the stream would be more widely available- will still reach more of an American audience though

My hope is they have good talent on the mic, that talks at the age level of its viewers, which the majority I'd think are not pool players.

I know it’s too much to hope for but it would be great if normal attire was the required instead of wearing shirts that look like NASCAR with emblems adorning the cars everywhere there is space. No one is buying anything because of a emblem on a already crowded shirt. But commercialization is rampant in everything we see, read or hear nowadays.

I just hope the commentators are not verbose, stick to pertinent observations and sidebar discussions should be of minimal duration. Instead, remarks and observations should be focused on what’s happening on the screen. Women announcers are very qualified to remark about male players and of course, vice versa. The key is to have a personality and insightful analysis because it is not just a one person announcer. There’s always at least one other person in the booth. So there needs to be some chemistry between the announcers and don’t just default to players with past championships. A great player is often times an otherwise very boring announcer so be sure to choose carefully.

Okay……here’s my question. I’d start a new thread but why bother since this one already exists. Instead of focusing on the venue or the American team selections, I would like to read how you feel about the best announcing combo’s, i.e., teams. Who would you propose to be the broadcast announcers?

Here is my first nominee…….Dr. David Alciatore……..if you have seen his videos, you know he is a pool genius and has a pleasant speaking tone and cadence. His observations would be so much more meaningful to hear.

My next nominee as his broadcast mate is…….any player that has played on a USA Mosconi Cup team but is not on this team. I just don’t want to see sentimental favorites picked to be in the announcers booth. What are your choices?

Pool needs its version of John Virgo from the snooker commentary world. Great voice, English accent of some sort I think. I could listen to that guy talk about someone cutting the grass.

My comment was more in hope than tongue-in-cheek. I love his NFL analysis (especially as a Giants fan watching him jump on Cam Scattebo's hype-train last season). I don't care too much for him ruining WrestleMania main events. His studio looks quite big. Maybe Matchroom should arrange for a table to be delivered to the Thunderdome.
