Us Open

David was a great champion in the 80s for those of us old enough to remember, and he played the caliber to beat anyone and win a US Open Championship. He had a billiard supply house called Little David's Billiards in Jacksonville last time I heard. Don't know if he still runs it now.

I think it says something positive about our sport. It says new players are stepping up and playing with the big boys. Good for them

I couldn't agree more. There are some very strong regional players - like Michael Fuller. Go, Mike!

Mike I am old enough to remember David Howard, He was a very nice guy that had all the game a man would need to get it done, which he did back in the 80s aginst guys like Siegal, Strickland, Varner, just to name a few. He could play a little....

Anyone know what Howard Vickery is doing nowadays? He was pretty strong back in 80s.

Misc. ramblings from the Open:

More strong filipino players here than in Manila! Van Corteza, Django, Gallego, Alcano, Kiamco and Luat. And this tournament is 9,000 miles away! Jonathan Sy brought many of these guys over here, and is putting them in action nightly at Q Master. Orcollo is playing on the Guinness Tour in Asia right now. That's why he isn't here. And Efren is sick at home we are told.

A shame that one of the main topics of conversation is about the recent World Ten Ball and will the players get paid. Many of these players are here and beginning to get antsy. I feel bad right now for Darren Appleton who is owed $100,000. I'm praying for him, one of the truly good guys in pool. A very strong European contingent is here, and I look for one of them to be there at the end.

Many good Asian players in the field, but none from Chinese Taipei. Maybe it's because of the Guinness Tour, but who knows. EVERYONE wants to see Wu over here, including me. I tell everyone he may be the best player on Earth today. We are working on a Challenge Match between reigning World Cup champs SVB and Rodney vs. either a team from Taipei, the Philippines or Great Britain. It will be held at next years DCC. Will keep you posted on this one, when it is set.

Good action nightly at Q Master. Two nights ago, Matt Clatterbuck beat Ronnie Wiseman in a 12 Ahead, Ten Ball match in a little over two hours. He won $7,000 and HE GOT PAID! Last night Donnie Mills played Warren Kiamco for $3,000, a Race to 26. With the score tied 20-20 Donnie shut Warren down, running six perfect racks! Soft break, made the corner ball and left the one near the far corner pocket. Six times in a row! Never got out of line and never had to make a hard shot. He played PERF!

Big mix up the first day. Flyers had been distributed saying the players meeting was at 3 PM Sunday, with the tourney getting underway at 8 PM. That was changed to a 8 PM players meeting on Saturday (a day earlier), with play starting at 11 AM Sunday. Unfortunately some players showed up on Sunday (Santos for one) and didn't get to play. Tony Robles also came late but he just got in on time. He is rolling too, three wins over all strong players. He beat Gallego last night 11-5 and has Johnny tonight. I have no idea why this happened but I saw the flyers which clearly stated Sunday 3 PM for the players meeting. Someone dropped the ball here big time.

Consequently the field only has 236 players and not a full field of 256. A strong field nonetheless. Barry Behrman stated that he would still add $85,000. Not too shabby, only the biggest and best tourney in the USA. This is still more than the $72,000 added last year.

One final disconcerting note. You may not be aware that the IPT and Trudough never completed the promised payouts. He still owes a final payment (11%) to all the players, and more to the players from the Qualifiers. ALL players I discussed this with said they had not yet gotten the last payment. Interesting how this was swept under the rug when he started his new round or events. All may be forgiven, but is definitely not forgotten. Once a con man, always a con man is my comment on this. I still think he only paid what he did under duress and fear for his life. JMO of course.

That's it? You have given up on tough bets??

One of the great things about the US Open is that it is a magnet for shortstops and up and comers. One of my friends from Charlotte is a B player and he ponied up the entry fee to play. I guess one thing is this for the tourist players - you might spend $200 on seats for the whole event or $600 and get "the player's pass" and have a shot at doing something.

The past 10 years or so especially when it's been fields of over 200 players it's great to see so many players from so many places. And it's different than the three ring circus that is the DCC. At the US Open, at the venue, the focus is on one thing and one thing only, the 9-ball championship.

DCC and The US Open are the two PREMIER events on US Soil that have endured and grown and are as prestigious as any World Championship.

The only thing that would make the US Open better is if it ever became truly OPEN and allowed women to play.

Why??

Don't you think it would be better if they played 10-ball?

NOPE... Then it wouldn't be the US Open 9-ball championship! Why change it, players and fans love it and it has worked very well.. If it ain't broke, why try to fix it! JMHO

No. I think it would be great if we had equally prestigious US Opens for 10 Ball, One Pocket, 8-Ball, and 14.1.

And of course I'd like to see them all completely open to any human being.

great post JB. I totally agree, why change the format for the US Open, Just add more formats to the tourney list. I know there are scheduling conflicts and all but, Wouldnt it be great to have a US Open 14.1 Championship. I think so. this is my opinion of course.

Tim.

I guess all of the Humble Pie has been digested and we have our "real" Jay back? (I like the real Jay!)

Where does David Howard play out of?

David Howard has a pool room called Lil David's Billiards on the west side of Jacksonville, FL off Timacquana (sp?). I've played his wife several times in APA league there. She hits em pretty sporty too.

9-ball IS a broken game with racking/breaking issues and far too much ease for the professional level of play to allow for the cream to rise to the top.

You can change it next year or in 20 years but 9-balls days are numbered as the main game by which pool is judged, and when it falls to the side like straight pool did when 9-ball became the main game then the US-Open is going to change with the sport or go extinct.

The Open

What a great tournament, great coverage, great players, and many thanks to all who have posted. I told the old'lady I was leaving in the morning. We were playing 8 ball. I plan on being there tomorrow for the evening matches and I am planning on surprising Drawman, who has never seen me play, or get surprised.
I hope my friend Brandon Shuff makes it into the money and could win it. I have played some 1 hole with him and it ain't no fun.
Peace guys, purd

I believe all the players that are still in right now will cash at least a $1000. Johnnyt

Please. If 10 ball were to become the dominant tournament game then players would figure out how to beat the rack just as they have in 9-ball. In fact, in the recent 10 ball WC they had a rule stating that four balls had to go past the side pocket right? If 10 Ball is the standard then a cleaver player like Corey Duel will study the rack and devise break that satisfy the rules and work better than everyone else's. Then the organizers will come along and change the rules again and so on and so on.

In fact, if I am not mistaken, didn't the WPA themselves CHANGE the rules in the MIDDLE of the event???? That's a game that is broken if the rules aren't sufficiently set in place BEFORE the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP takes place.

9-Ball is a hard enough test of skill for the cream to rise to the top. So is 10-ball, 14.1, 1-pocket, and 8-ball. Most people consider 8-ball to be far easier than 9-ball. Since Efren won the last IPT event against the best in the world would you say that he isn't the best 8-ball player in the world?

Look at the results for the US Open and for that matter all professional level 9-ball tournaments during the past 30 years. I am certain that the cream sits firmly on top.
