How did it work against me??

The cue sold. Good for Kevin. Maybe not so good for the person who bought it. How does this affect me in the slightest?

I'm not trying to kill Kevin's business. I'm just pointing out some facts from the other side of the coin. Kevin is quick to call himself and his cues the best there is. And there are a few of you guys out there that have probably never played with anything else in the custom world, and so, you're quick to agree. So while you guys inundate us with all the reasons we should love Kevin and his cues, I'm just one of many who are quick to point out that there are plenty of other reasons to perhaps steer clear. You guys want to buy these cues? Great! Have fun! Its no skin off my back. But if you're going to offer your opinion, be prepared to hear the opinions of those who may not agree with you.

I've owned many custom cues from some very well-respected guys. I've played with many, many more. And yes. I have used a Varney on a rare occasion or two. He makes a decent jump/break cue. But for $400+? I'm sorry. I just think that's a little silly.

Don't get up set !

Kevin never told me his cue's hit better then anybody elses, for one. and I been collecting (34) customs for years some high end and some entry level cuemakers cue's I never said his cue's were the best ,I never really said anything about them I said give the guy a chance. And everyone should be able to have their opinion if you don't like them don't buy them. I for one am not pushing his cue's .I wanted to try them out so I bought them, But Im still looking for all these people to speak up that Kevin ripped off. Like I said everyone should have their opinions but this thread would not have went this far if people were not bashing him. That was my point, It was at the top of page 1 when I left this morning and when I came home around 4 pm it was still up, All I meant was it stayed at or on page one all day, Kevin didn't push this cue every post on this thread did the job !! Im personally sorry if I offended anybody I did not mean to<<ED

Listen

I bought the cues. And I will give you my review when I get them. And let me tell you this... it will be totally impartial but will only be MY opinion. As far as Mia goes... everything is personal preference and I get that. But just because you didn't like the way it played doesn't mean somone else won't love it. I too have played with the best there is to offer. I've shot/owned everything from production cues like Meucci, McDermott and Viking to customs like Phillippi, Black Boar, Scruggs, Lambros, Sly, Cognescenti, Espiritu, Richard Black and so forth. So, I know that even the best cue makers in the world make cues that feel like crap when someone hits them and feel like gold when someone else hits them. Everything is subjective.

So, I'll let you know what I think of his cues when I get them. But, it will only be my opinion. It won't be a universal opinion.

I will tell you straight up that he was one of the best cue makers I've dealt with in general. Heck, Kevin was even willing to send the cues out to me before I had even paid for them. I'd challange anyone to find a maker like that. And, I have in the past had to put a substantial deposit down on a cue that was supposed to be finished in 2 months but wasn't finished for 6. And all this was from one of the best known makers in the world. So, don't fault the guy for running into a timeline problem. I too would like to actually hear from the person he "stole" from.

I go back to my previous post... if you can't say anything nice about someone, don't say anything at all. If you haven't been PERSONALLY burned by someone, don't bash them based on what you have heard. That's slander in my book.

That is all.

people that have no clue on cuemakering should not comment on the processes reguarding cuemaking.....

thats the problem with this industry compared to some others...

Four words:

KEITH JOSEY
RICK HOWARD

How do these guys keep cranking out awesome cue after awesome cue, and keep hitting timelines every single time? Must be something in the southern Georgia/North Florida air. Oh wait - no. It's that they actually have a PROCESS and treat cuemaking like a career, not a hobby.

How to tell a "hobby" cuemaker from a professional? Professionals hit timelines, and know how long it takes to get things done. They know their wait list time, and cues come out in sequence. And NO quality cuemaker I have ever dealt with asks for 100% up front.

15 posts and already buying cues!

just my thoughts...

i have views on both sides of the fence. and i must say that imho "all" parties are 'right'.

i don't want to rehash the past. but to the newer AZ'ers, 'note': kevin did not treat some of his customers properly for sure. no doubt.

and in fairness and on the other hand, he was and is really liked and respected by others here on AZ.

just my 2 cents: i think kevin has come a long way in dealing with his customers. so if a lesson is learned, then i don't feel the past is equal to the present [and should remain like The Scarlet Letter forever].

and just from my perspective, i think he makes cues that are very tasteful. besides, i bought a kv break cue from an unhappy AZer and i must say, it is a very good breaker. i told kevin i would rather have a playing cue from him and he said 'no problem' - i will take it in trade.

and finally, having spoken to kevin both by pm's and on the phone, he was always very nice. and me being older and voicing my strongly critical opinions to him, he always admitted to me, i was right.

i hope we can all just move on now.

best to all,
smokey

15 posts and already buying cues!

I've bought about 10 cues off this site from someone else's handle. I never wanted to join because people argue and criticize WAY too much. But, I got tired of asking him to buy it and giving him the money. And, because I'm moving away... it made more since for me to handle it myself.

And why does it matter how many posts I have before I buy a cue? I would have bought two in my first couple of posts (scruggs and bluegrass) if I hadn't had to pay the closing costs for the house I just bought my parents.

I know you weren't criticizing me for buying a cue... just making a joke I'm sure. I'm just touchy and I don't like anyone.

I can't believe after so many lies and broken promises people still continue to support this guy. I am sure Kevin is estatic that he continues to get away with it. And Kevin if you think it is good buisness practice to take customers deposits on cues and ignore them all the while selling new cues yourself, you better take some buisness 101 classes. Sure you can do what you want and obviously your style is working as we have 5 pages of people supporting you. I say it is a joke that the mods let you sell here and soon enough Varney lovers, the true KV will come out again. To all you potential buyers--If you are naive enough to send this guy money for a cue that will surely take 5x as long as he says to make, then PLEASE don't start a new thread saying "Where's Kevin Varney" " Anybody see KV?" "Why is Varney selling cues and not answereing my pm's?" ect,ect,ect...This seems to be the pattern around here.

This is my last post on this subject. I am only going by MY OWN PERSONAL experience, I was treated like a VIP by Mr. Varney and I will be eternally grateful for that

Best of luck again Kevin

Have a good night everybody

Oh, he's treated everyone he's dealt with as a VIP. Very Important Paycheck. It's been on the delivery side after he's been a prince that gets him into hot water.

You guys asked where some of the 'ripped off' customers were... and there you go!!!

Troy laid out money on a cue and got ducked by Kevin for a LOOOONG time. And believe me, Troy knows cues. Take a look at his collection. Take a look at some of the cues he sold to make room for bigger and badder cues that are monster lookers & players. He's dealt with a number of cuemakers before. I'd would venture to guess he know a little more about cues than most people here.

Personally, I'd take Troy's word over 90% of the guys on this thread that have nothing better to do that proclaim Kevin Varney as the nicest man alive. If he's such a great guy, why has he resorted to threats before? If he's such a great businessman, why is he selling cues while customers are waiting for their orders? Why is he on AZ 15 times a day instead of in his shop? Why are there so many threads asking where Kevin is and why won't he respond? Kevin has more excuses for his actions rather than reasonable explanations. And if he's just trying to make money to put food on his family's table, why is he spending several thousand on custom handguns? And why is he sending his product out for test drives and risking losing preciouos food money???

Buy all the Varney's you want. Action and Schmelke have always made decent blanks and both Atlas and Prather have some great supplies. I'm sure you'll all be happy with their products. Enjoy.
