Vegas question

I see rooms available at the Tropicana for the full week from May 14-21. Do you mean just that the block is sold out?

And if the rate is a bit too high, Excalibur is right across the way and looking like $30-$40 less per night.

If you were willing to rent a car, I would recommend one of the Station Casinos. They are the "Local" Casinos and there are about4 or 5 of them around Vegas. Probably a 20-30 minute drive to any of them, but they are fairly reasonable and pretty nice:

Not sure what your dates are, but Palace Station is the closest to downtown and it was $450 for 4 nights in May.

Thank you for the suggestion. Will do.

It’s a car and mouse game. Mrs Fatboy checks it a couple times a day before departure. Sometimes you can snag a super cheap ticket.

The computers calculate the fares and when they are full up, sometimes the last few seats are super cheap.

Booking way in advance to make sure your on a flight is important. But it can get better as the date approaches. Just check it periodically.

Also check the day before Friday flights are always expensive going to vegas. Sometimes depending on conventions other days are expensive. They hammer convention traffic with brutal pricing. A extra day at the hotel is almost always less than the extra airfare. If you can swing the days with your schedule.

The Trop told my teammates who tried that the block is long gone and they're not booking rooms for the weekend for the pool players. Maybe they don't like pool players.

They told my roomie a week ago, who got Tues Wed and Th booked, that they were trying to get a room "next door" for us for the weekend. There is really no "next door" at that intersection. I've stayed at the New York right outside the roller coaster scream zone. Not good. When the original MGM burnt down we kind of avoided the new one after that.

Thanks,

I just looked on KAYAK for Des Moines to LAS round trip. May 13 - 22. They have fares as low as $345. United through Denver is $733
Sounds right.

United is brutal sometimes. They all are.

Kayak or other aggregators are the way to buy airfare
.
Buying direct from any carrier is bad action.

940 just don’t sound right unless it’s 1st class or around a huge convention where every room/flight is booked

💡💡💡'VE BEEN TO VEGAS AT LEAST 8 TIMES. NON- POOL RELATED. TRY MGM..WHY?? BECAUSE, #1 MGM IS ON THE STRIP, #2 MGM IS THE LARGEST HOTEL IN VEGAS WITH THE MOST ROOMS, SO THEY PROBABLY HAVE AVAILABIITY AT A GOOD RATE

I’ve also learned to never tell a hotel why your there-unless there’s a group code for a group rate.

It’s possible to travel without getting robbed, but it’s a game not to get robbed.

Remember the “hustling thread” recently. It applies here as well.

Also hotels will show booked up and 4 hours later there’s a room. Again just have to check often.

There’s a site called “the points guy” or “points guy” those guys are pro’s at travel and know all the moves.

Since I travel often I’ve learned to play the game so to speak and travel pretty cheap. Not always tho, usually.

Your not locked into anything until the day you leave. It’s very dynamic.

I went right to the ACS link and there are in fact still rooms available to book in the block - from May 14-21, it is $85/night every night except the night of the 14th when it is $311. The following Saturday similarly jumps in price to $359

I just checked with Southwest and they offer round trip flights from DSM to LAS in that time period from $204 to $666 depending on how and exactly when you want to fly.

We'll start checking for new rates on flights as time goes by.

Again, thanks so much everyone. You guys are the nuts. I'm just nuts.

lol

We won the trip a few weeks ago and the hotel was already full.

I might suggest to our league ops that they buy 3 or 4 rooms before our season playoff so whoever wins has some rooms for sure where the venue is. They give us the money as we book rooms and plane flights, as using the prize money for Vegas is required. We can't just take the money and run.

Thanks,

Jeff Livingston
And that is how the game is played.

So now you gotta go and win this thing.

We shopped and shopped. I'd pay extra for a direct flight, but damn, this is ridiculous. Maybe it's the dollar? I about crapped when my wife told me the price.

I might hire a guy to drive me instead if we can cancel the ticket. It says 24 hours cancellation and my wife thought that was before the event but the paper says it is 24 hours to cancel after making the reservation.

It seems we're slowly but surely getting pinched hard.

Gas prices hit airlines harder than most, look up how much fuel it takes to fly one of those metal things, it's a lot. I remember the helicopter pilots at the hospital I worked in years ago telling me that with the maintenance costs and fuel, just for them to lift off it's hundreds of dollars, like if they fly up a few 100 feet and back down.

Stay at the Paris and say hi to the blackjack pit with the catwalk and dealers in the bustiers for me. When you get blackjack it pays even money...worth every penny.

Yeah... just for the hell of it I searched Halifax, N.S. to Vegas at that time.
$670can= ~$500us. Which is high for us. We can usually fly for about $425can.

... I got a plane ticket but it cost $940 with one stop!...
Southwest seems to be about $500 but some flights in May are already sold out for the cheap seats. Sometimes it's cheaper to fly a day later or earlier and you save enough to make up for the extra room night.

It jumped a bunch!

I gotta go through Denver, too.

Des Moines. Last time I used United it took me 32 hours to get home from Vegas with no bad weather. I didn't even get a free lunch. I swore I'd never fly them again but what choice is there?

Jeff Livingston
I'd drive up to Minneapolis and fly out from there. Can get non-stop flights to Vegas through Delta for half that price

Or Southwest has non-stop from Omaha for about $400.

Another factor if you have a separate bag for cues is that Southwest gives you two 50-pound pieces of luggage for free.

We each won $1200 for expenses but that won't cover it now. I'd stay home if it was just me, but there are 5 other guys involved here.
Does your league operator give you a 1099 if he cuts you a check for $1,200? My team will be out there next week for the USAPL tournament and our league operator books our rooms for us since he said he has to give us a 1099 for any amount over $600.

We get a check for $300 towards our flight but the room is the biggest hassle since I end up staying longer for the period he pays the room for. Trying to talk to someone over the phone to join multiple reservations into one is a nightmare.

all the airlines have an algorithm that sees where you are wanting to go and checking on prices so it raises them as you return to the site. so dont use the same ip address for your booking or do it on the first try.

and if you know someone in vegas have them go to the front desk and make a reservation for you and slip them a 50 dollar bill to get it done and it will get it down except in the few casinos where the desk cant accept tips. do it discretely. it works for an big upgrade as well if you arent a jerk.
