Want to give props to Scot Sherbine at Proficient Billiards for an awesome job done at refinishing my original Verl Horn cue. I was a little nervous sending it in to someone Ive never done business with before, but I got to tell you he did an amazing job and I couldn't be happier. Also want to give a special thanks to Alton at Cuecaps for making my joint protectors, they are a perfect compliment to the butt of my cue. The pics dont do it justice. Great job guys and thank you! Here are some pics of before it was finished http://forums.azbilliards.com/album.php?albumid=536 and here is the new album http://forums.azbilliards.com/album.php?albumid=577

Verl made me several of this model,if you decide to sell or consider a trade please contact me

I originally had a balabushka or 2 like this,Mike Cochran made me a few including the one Dennis Searing finished that was very close to its twin

Again you have a beauty there

Dean

Very nice!

Bama has the sister cue you PMed me about. Call Joe if you like.
As you know I am old school and this is my cup of tea!
Congradulations.
Timi Scruggs said to me once Proficient billiards that guy there really does nice ferinish work.
Nick :)

Beautiful cue. I like some of the modern styles but nothing will ever take the place of the traditional cues like yours.

Wow, what a cue. I have wanted a cue like this for a long time, the red rings in the butt are my favorite. :)

Thank you for the compliments

I appreciate the kind words, this cue has alot of history so I am told. I was able to find old posts, articles and pictures that feature this cue and some that are similar. Its actually in the Blue Book of Cues 3rd edition page 51. Bill at Cornerstone Cues, Mr.Pete Tascarella via email, the gentleman whom I purchased it from, and a few others here on Az have told me that it has been passed around as a Balabushka a few times. Cornerstone once had it listed on here as a Verl Horn with a Szamboti blank, but Ive been told its a Burton Spain...who knows... One thing I do know is its a kick ass old school cue that plays magically. I was scared to remove the linen wrap and put the lizard wrap on it, but I thought it would flow nicely with the ebony in the forearm and the black acrylic in the butt. I'm glad I did.

A lot of Horns have been passed around as Bushkas. In fact there rumor is they were ordered for that very purpose. Before the internet age when knowledge was very hard to come by. It looks like a Burton blank, BTW.

Damn nice Cue with Red

Hey, now you have it tested enough, send it over for my Collection:grin:

Makes alot of sense...Makes me wonder how many ended up in private collections that were sold as Bushkas, Im sure a few people truly believed they had a Balabushka and maybe they had a Horn. Has this ever happened to anyone out there?

I have heard similar stories... and by looking at the cues like this it is easy to see how some people believed they were originals. This is one of the reasons I have never jumped into the vintage cue fray.

Nevertheless.. a very nice looking cue and it appears Scott did a spectacular job.

I spent much time with Verl in Oklahoma and at his shop,on the road on the west coast

I never heard him mention once buying burton spain blanks

I have seen 100 similar blanks of verls that he made and sold to cue makers
toward the end Prather was making the blanks

Jerry franklin made me several cues from Horn blanks, usually fancy 6 or 8 point ivory points

I would suggest that Burton Spain never made blanks for Verl.It is a shame that people suggest that Verl made these to sell as Balabushkas, when it was always made clear that they were Verl Horn cues

I believe Verl made parts for George and even Gus

nice cue for sure, many great players loved his cues, includind David Matlock one of the very best money players ever

When Horn made me a cue in 1988 he told me that particular cue's blank from Prather. At that time he was up there in age. I don't think I have ever heard anyone say Verl made them to sell as Bushkas for himself.

Verl made a solid hitting cue that's for sure.

jeez didn't that cue originally have a cortland wrap?

Cortlald wrap, that was one of the nice things about Verl ,he had so much original material or he could find it.
I believe he originally had Cortland but ended up with Blue Mountain linen which was similar in many ways.

I miss Verl

One way Verl made his cues different was in using birdseye instead of the straight grain maple that George used, Another difference was that Verl used ivory in his bushka rings,

Both of these are dead giveaways if you want a balabushka
