On Tuesdays there is an 8b practice league that I play in that usually attracts between 40-50 players. It's a fun format with races to 1 with teams selected by computer based on everyone's averages.

A new guy came yesterday and he was wearing what appeared to be an Ove-Glove on his bridge hand. I remember them from infomercials some years ago.

In addition to that glove; he was shooting with a fiberglass cue with a metal ferrule and what sounded like a phenolic tip.

He kicked my ass.

I know it was a race to 1 and anything can happen but I've made up my mind and it's final...

I'm not going pro. :o  :o

I love this story (not that you got beat, but that it takes all kinds).

I've got two Ove Gloves. I'm not going pro either.

Freddie <~~~ they don't help

Those gloves are good under the fire or when the heat is on while playing. I think I'll try 'em. (sorry, it had to be said).

Dave

That was pretty bad, sir.

Maybe he played well under pressure 'cause the cue had moral fiber glass in it...
....okay, okay....that was pretty bad also....maybe worse....:o

What the hell is a "practice" league?

after the horrible experience I endured; all you want to know about is "what the hell is a practice league?" :grin-square:

okay, so basically, every Tues a bunch of guys who love pool and have nothing better to do get together and each guy pays $6.50 to play. You can come whenever you care to, there is no obligation to be there at all.

The teams are selected based on player's averages and whichever team scores higher at the end of all matches, those players will get back $5.00 each for the win.

So, worse case scenario is that your team loses and you had an afternoon of pool for $6.50.

If your team wins, it cost $1.50.

Some pretty good players are mixed in the group, it's competitive, and a fun way to pass a Tuesday afternoon.

It mighta coulda been worse, but I cant guarantee it. What if it said "love glove" instead of "ove glove" and he expected compensation for his victory? That woulda scared me straight right outta pool right there.
I hope your next try at competition is a little less shocking and a little more successful.

P.S. Is there a possibility someone was pranking you, that would certainly make it sound more credible.

I thought Billy Mays got cleaned out by the hooker?

No wait...THAT was the Oxy Clean guy. :grin-square::grin-square:

EDIT:
I stand corrected; it was the Sham Wow guy that the hooker cleaned out. And bit. In the tongue. :p

He may have cheated if he was using spray on PAM to lubricate his stick. It keeps your cup cakes from sticking to the pan. Only talc can be used!

Actually, a fair question DDogs.

I never paid much attn to the details because I figured it to be a good value, win or lose.

I am aware that the guy who directs the league (does all the paperwork, computer averages, etc) gets a piece and the house gets a piece for the table time. We are usually occupying about 15 tables.

The director also orders a snack for the players from the kitchen and there is a summer and winter tournament with prizes plus 2 session ending banquets per year.

Nice that we can funnel a little $$$ back into the pool hall for this 'off-time' use.

Def a win/win imo.
