here it is ,at league last night playing a skill level 5, me being a 3,apa,there was this guy on other team making comment out loud ,his exact comments were, this guy is nothing you got this game bud,he has no shot whats he going to do now, there was one I time I had absolutely NO SHOT he had me on rail with two of his balls in front (still don't know how he got it there,l.o.l)so I gave him ball in hand then the guy says MAKE him pay take the game , during our last match I got down on my shot and we heard him say to his team mate, you got this bud you have a better stick bud take it quick, well before I even made a shot I got up walked over to OUR corner put my que stick up took my glove off and bolted to other side of table ,my team captain grab and took me back to table and said forget it,so I gave the guy the game by breaking down my stick, the thing of is the player beat fair and square,i was left with ONE ball on table for every match that's it,so I WAS happy because to ME I played a good match, and im smart enough to realize that the jerk DIDNT cause me to lose,i was out played,im fairly new to this league stuff but is this common ??? I sure hope not

I assume you are new to the game? That is kindergarten sharking at best. You need to ignore or take up a new pastime. The best reaction from you is NO reaction at all. That will drive them nuts.

Some of that talk was probably just to bolster your opponents confidence and not directed at you personally. (I don't know the people involved so I could be wrong about that.) Saying ANYTHING while you're down on a shot, though, is out of line.

The behavior's not uncommon and you have a non-physical retaliation. You tell the other team to STFU while you're shooting. You put the other team's captain on notice and if it continues it can be a forfeit of the match.

From what you say, it sounds like you were actually going to go over and fight the guy? If that's true, you need to learn how to handle your anger better because nothing that happens in APA is worth an assault charge.

Well it's all relative...

Obviously you were offended by the comments made by the crowd. If you're overly sensitive to what others have to say then speak up.

"Hey guy what's the deal?"

"Does he need you to remind him of his skill level? Are u gonna let him know when it's his turn to shoot?"

"He's a 5 and I'm a 3 so I guess that makes you a 2?"

Call timeout "Hey my friend get this guy some Pom Poms and skirt."

"Hey I'm going to get a drink. You want anything? Hate for you to get dehydrated later while you're jerking him off."

But if that's not your style then just shoot pool. It doesn't matter if its League or Gambling its just thats how ppl are. The fact that you realize the opponent you faced beat you and that you played well is a start. Run with that and just remember ultimately its just you and the table, everything else is just spectating.

Don't give up bc then ur just giving him what he wants.

APA at it's best. You can take to the league operator about unsportsmanlike conduct ultimately;
It is better to shut them up by winning....

Next time, gouge his eyes out with a Tip Pik and shove a Delta-13 up where the sun don't shine. Then take your broken down cue and use it like a set of nunchucks upside his head!!!!

Then....buy him a beer and forget about it.

im not a fan of apa but, i think that is pool in general when there is ANYTHING at stake. even pride or bragging rights.

to the original poster, since you asked, yes i think you were out of line if you were ready to get physical over it.

if you dont want to speak up and say something to the people who do that, then just stand up next to the table and stand there and wait til they shut up. if they start talking again when you bend down to shoot, just stand up again and wait. 9 out of 10 people get the point and shut up.

Good or Bad atleast they are talking about ya..... keep working keep practising chances are someone like that will never get better at the game and let your cue do the talking.

Lots of good answers here. But yes, this stuff is unfortunately common. What I like to do when someone wont stfu, is just stand there when its my shot. When someone notices you aren't shooting, just keep waiting. If they still don't get it, let the crowd know you will shoot when whoever it is, shuts the hell up. Be patient, and pretend it doesn't bother you.

NO I WASNT going over to fight, when I said bolted I meant doing it right then an there not waiting (sorry about that text get blown out of perportion)im 50 years old my fighting days are over for stupid crap besides he was a lot younger than me not saying I couldn't handle myself:grin-square: but I like to wake up the next morning with all of my teeth (real teeth):wink:besides im a very very quite person any body that knows me will tell you that ,funny someone mention about standing there and wait FOR THE CLOWN to shut his trap but I thought there was a time limit at table ,cause he wasn't shutting anytime soon :)

if they question how long you are taking then nicely say you are waiting for him to stop sharking you.

Yeah, you overreacted.

It's common to pump up a teammate by saying "you can beat this guy, he sucks".
Usually it's not said out loud where the other guy can hear it.
In our league people keep it at a lower volume.

But really, loud or quiet, so what? It's the exact same rude comment whether you hear it or not.

Someone out there in the world thinks you're a bad pool player?
Well so what? Why should you respect their opinion?
Most of us are bad pool players, to somebody.
A pro thinks an APA 8 sucks. An APA 8 thinks the 5 sucks. That 5 thinks APA 2's suck.

There will always be people who think you're not good at pool.
The fact that they say it out loud is rude but you have plenty of options to handle it.
Flipping out and quitting is not one of the better ones.

The part where I think you're out of line is breaking down your cue and giving him the game. Never give up. Play it out. The high road obviously is to put them on notice during the game with reports to the LO. We all know how the LOW road pans out.

If this was a sharking attempt it was lame. If it wasn't and your opponent really needed someone to talk to him like that, then he's mentally weak. Your advantage. You're allowed to talk to yourself during the match. So next time that happens you can talk aloud saying things that will shake his mental ground. Something like, "Even if I miss, he cant run this table out". He might actually try to run out and fall out of shape on the last 2 balls before the 8ball. This will open the table up and you'll have easier layout. As an APA3, you only need to win 1 game to put him in trouble. You'll notice that the higher ranking players never talk or need someone to talk to them. They let the opponent make a mistake that allows them to win the game. Personally, I like putting them on notice. Having the LO around to police them adds pressure they'll remember for other matches too. LOL

Some people just like to have fun.

Could of told him how good he was and you want to grow up and be like him.

Could of said yes you really suck but his mother or wife doesn't mind 'cause that's one thing she loves about you.

Could of just smiled and agreed with everything he said.

Could of said you were a professional sandbagger and you want to do it your way.

It's just a game. He played his game with his mouth and you fed into it.

You need to hit the ignore button sometimes.

it wasn't the actual opponent making comments it was a team mate, the opponent was a cool guy

When I played APA, the other team was always cheering loudly for their player while mine was quietly staring at their phones. Being able to play when the crowd is against you is a good skill to learn. :)

Next time, you might use what you hear as a new, more powerful motivation to win.

Or you could choose to think your thoughts in your first post...and lose.

It's that choice. Practice making that choice and soon the problem disappears and even becomes a solution!

Another one-time technique is to get something--anything, a newspaper, flyer, etc-- written and hand it to the talker and say, "here, read this." Then runout while he's busy reading.
