Was I out of line??

it wasn't the actual opponent making comments it was a team mate, the opponent was a cool guy

You want a fair game right?! If his (the other guy) actions are affecting your game, and can be interpreted as "sharking" or "poor sportsmanship" and fall under the guidelines of being an issue with the APA rules, then you should bring it to the LO's attention. Otherwise, put it behind you and prepare yourself for the next time that it happens.

If the other guy isn't even on their team, I'm sure there are actions the league can do.

When I play, I tune everything out. (Mute button as some else suggested).

here it is ,at league last night playing a skill level 5, me being a 3,apa,there was this guy on other team making comment out loud ,his exact comments were, this guy is nothing you got this game bud,he has no shot whats he going to do now, there was one I time I had absolutely NO SHOT he had me on rail with two of his balls in front (still don't know how he got it there,l.o.l)so I gave him ball in hand then the guy says MAKE him pay take the game , during our last match I got down on my shot and we heard him say to his team mate, you got this bud you have a better stick bud take it quick, well before I even made a shot I got up walked over to OUR corner put my que stick up took my glove off and bolted to other side of table ,my team captain grab and took me back to table and said forget it,so I gave the guy the game by breaking down my stick, the thing of is the player beat fair and square,i was left with ONE ball on table for every match that's it,so I WAS happy because to ME I played a good match, and im smart enough to realize that the jerk DIDNT cause me to lose,i was out played,im fairly new to this league stuff but is this common ??? I sure hope not

It is not common but happens from time to time. Usually from the same few members (pun intended) who think that they are being subtle in their sharking.

If the comments you are quoting are verbatim or even close to it, he is at the very least from the remedial class of pool cheering for a teammate or maybe has no class at all.

That said, if someone on the other team is deliberately trying to disturb your game then I would suggest that you stand up look him in the eye and, without anger, calmly say, “Let me know when you are finished talking so I can continue.” This should be enough.

Final thought; I assume you are not the Captain of your team, the Captain should have reacted on your behalf.

when's the last time anyone had anything good to say about the apa? that's right NEVER

How about right now?

The APA is an entity that has been great for pool. Every year, they introduce league pool to hundreds, if not thousands, of new players. By virtue of that, they may have a large percentage of players who are still learning "the ropes," just as in the situation with the op, but those who can tough out the initiation period are usually hooked for life. And many of those even move on to play in some of the more "refined" leagues.

This is very good. I like handicap leagues. You just got to know how it all works. For myself it's tough to always spot people games. It's so tough...I needed to quit my job and practice 8 hours a day just so I could play and be competitive. It's hard but I like it.

Leagues playing heads up was too easy for me.

In that situation if a guy starts talking while "I" am shooting I am getting up off my shot, going to my seat, sitting down, taking a drink of beer, and then staring at the guy who cannot keep his yap shut while I am at the table. When he finally makes a comment about it (and he will) I will ask him if he is dobe talking while I am shooting or does he have other s=_+ to say because I can wait.

He will likely get the point and shut up. If he does not then it is going to be a long night.

Lol for every one good story you hear there are 20 with idiots like this. In 9 ball the guys that our between 4 and 7 in iur league our the cockiest group you meet. They don't know enough to know they don't know anything.
To the poster you shouldn't have quit. If you lose you lose but never give up. Make him earn it. I got angry and quit an Apa tournament one time. I don't regret the loss ... I regret letting my anger get to me

so it seems I should just wait for them to finish playing there childish games then continue?MY WHOLE TEAM consist of ALL family members No one had any previous league play so we are in the TEETHING stage I guess, I will admit no one really knows all the rules what " rules " we do know is what the other opposing teams apply,we had no idea that this would be such an endevour to try and abide by rules but it seems they change when the occasion arises we have meet some really helpful people but more often than not,and a lot of people tend to want to argue the rule if you question it

That's only because when everything goes well (which is most of the time), there's nothing to comment about.

It's like the adage, if a customer has a good experience he tells 1 person, if he has a bad experience he tells 10.

i love irony and find it very ironic that u are defending the apa when it is just like bonus ball which u have also supported, 99% of the topics about them shed a negative light on both, the apa is all about the apa making $ no more and no less, the only difference between the 2 is the apa threads are annoying and pointless and the bb threads are fairly entertaining

if people wanna waste their $ on apa and feel like they get something out of it that is worth all the $ they waste then more power to em but why come on here and complain about it every day when most if not all knew exactly what they were getting into?

i am not an apa hater just a realist, it is a virtual scam that has a touch of genius to it w a lot of luck mixed in but to say it supports pool is an absolute joke

Next time tell them you can hear them talking. Its ok for them to make those types of comments to his player but it shouldn't be so loud that it distracts you from your game.

I would also suggest trying to use a period in your posts. Trying to read one huge sentence makes my brain hurt.

Ok, this what you should do! For a lot of reasons! Go get Joe Tuc2ker's "guaranteed improvement" book! There are 10 drills and 10 specialty shots! Focus on straight ins, 1-rail, 2-rail, 3-rail, and all the specialty shots! Learn to love 10down and brainwashing! And get used to rail shots!!! Now, practice 2 hrs a day for 6months! Get help if you need it! Get help from GOOD players, skill level 8 in 8-ball or 10 in 9-ball!!!;) (I know its 7 and 9) anyway, practice for 6months and go find the fearless 5! You will run over him spotting him a game;) personally, I hate lower handicap players that talk, all they do is talk, its pathetic! I like talking with money;) a few months back, APA, I was playing a 4! I beat him in 3innings! His friend comes up to me and says you wanna gamble, I says sure! He says ok, you go to 6 I go to 3! I says sure:):) how much I asked? He says, 20 bucks!!! I said are you out of your pathetic stupid head! He looked at me in amazement! I said, buddy,,,, 20bucks?!?!?! Wtf!!!! You want to play for 20, then its 20 a game! If you want a spot, you better bring some $$$! Anyway, the moral of the story, don't let idiot APA players get to you! If it bothers you that much, do what I said, get Joe Tucker's stuff and in 6 months of dedicated practice,,,, you will drill him! That's exactly what I did, because that happened to me! Remember, practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice make perfect! And above all else, love the game for the true beauty it possesses!

As a fellow team captain, and certainly not the type to put down cash on each rack (meaning i'm not cut from leather like many of the AZB members who have posted in this thread), I would give this advice:

1) Your team captain should, between racks, approach the opposing team captain.

2) Inform the opposing team captain that the constant chatter from a non-shooting player is inappropriate during the match, ESPECIALLY while you are shooting.

3) if they want to keep talking then they need to move away from the table to talk.

4) This is the only warning and a foul will be called if it continues.

Q: Is it childish that you have to resort to this sort of conversation with an opposing team just to shoot some pool and have fun?
A: Yes.

Q: Will it defuse the situation while also letting your team have a good time during this night and in future nights when you play against this team?
A: Yes

It is YOUR time and money to shoot pool with friends/family and this team is ruining YOUR good time. The captain to captain talk such as I outlined above resolves 95% of situations in APA. If their gets past that and continues to be rude then you talk to the League Operator.

Now, for the other guys who like to play at the halls for cash and enjoy the more cutthroat aspects of the game: I agree with you, put up or shut up. Shut him up by winning and take his money!!!!

Unfortunately that is not viable in this situation and with some new people to the world of pool that isnt played in a friends house over a beer and dinner.

Punctuation is for the weak.

I have seen this before in apa

I have seen this before in apa. I just stop even addressing the shot. I look at the "jerk" and ask if he is done so I can shoot. Watch his team members tell him to shut up. Reverse the psych. on him and hopefully his team mate.

You have to learn to just ignore them. Keep remembering that stupid people that act like that aren't even worth your time or effort and they sure aren't worth you worrying about them. Just do their best to tune them out. I know it is hard at first to ignore people like this, but like others have said this does happen in pool. Over time you will learn to ignore the sharks and their antics.

If you can't tune them out just yet, the second best advice I can give is to just stand at the table waiting for them to shut up before you shoot.

You lost your cool and played right into your opponents sharking.
Answering a verbal remark with a physical reaction is a stupid thing to do, you never know what you get yourself into, the guy could be packing, he could call he`s biker friends etc. etc.
You should have told him in a polite tone, that you think he was acting in a unsporty way and that you don`t wan`t to play him/her anymore.

Yea you over reacted but that is a immature operformance from the other guy. I had a league issue myself last night. I just joined the league this session you are supposed to statt as a 4 but I have played before so stated that and they tried me at a 5. My first wek I beat a 6 wuite easily and the the opposing team had another 6 who was saying "this guy has played before, he is just putting balls over his hole he isnt that good, he thinks he knows how to play but he doesnt know " etc etc.

Anyhow I am liek okay so anyway I move upto a 7 in the next two weeks so we played a few weeks ago at a singles qualifier and not in same bracket but he was telling a friend of mine that he couldnt believe im a 7 and he has been a 6 for years but has been top gun and won more t=moeny in ppol thna most people have earned etc etc so im like okay i guess we will play and see .

last nght we are playing and they gaev a really nice team anyway we put me up and they out up their 3?? i was like wtf and so were all my team as neither of us could make playoffs so nothing ot gain by playing strategy. I play the 3 and he plays our 2 (who is handicapped) apparently sio he can keepo his top gun place. After the night over we are shaking hands i say to him " hey what happened, i thoguth we weer going to play i was looking foward to a match": he replied "your lucky we didnt play especially with you giving me a game" well my friend on the team has away with words and jumps in and say okay then lets play i got $500 on my friend, he says no I am not interested. My friend so eloquently says well then shut the **** up or il bite your fukn nose off. touche.

Handle every distraction BEFORE you get down on a shot. If something needs to be dealt with, deal with it. Do not ever shoot until you are completely ready.

Whether it is sharking from your opponent, you forgot to chalk up, or anything else, treat it all the same. Stand up and deal with it and only then shoot pool.

Never let them affect your game. Stop shooting until you are content and stop giving a crap how long it takes to play your game.

You were going to fight a guy over an apa league match?

1. You need to get better at pool.

2. You to learn how to ignore that nonsense.

Watch this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoMpVeaMoRM

Efren Reyes is playing world class pool in the midst of chaos. On every shot there are people in his sight line, people talking, people moving, between racks people are shouting and gambling.

If you can't handle a guy saying something without fighting then you should take up fighting instead of pool.
