Was Mosconi correct in thinking that pool should be a gentleman's game?

Blame Obama, Unions, and the other who have allowed many good paying job to be shifted or out sourced to third world countries.
Yeah, because right to work states that have gimped Unions have reallllllly shown an aptitude for bringing in good paying jobs. (hint: good paying jobs are very far from the norm in those places)

Good place for this quote.....

"Every gentleman plays billiards, but someone who plays billiards too well is no gentleman".

Thomas Jefferson....

“It’s not that Willie believed pool was inherently good or wholesome. In fact, it may have been the opposite. But like that of any prophet, Willie spread the word that when pursued properly and with discipline it was an endeavor that could transcend the worldly muck. Directly or indirectly, he promoted the notion that those who play his game should be clean-cut, should eschew gambling and vulgar language, should refrain from excessive drinking. He felt that only in this way could pool flourish.” –R.A. Dyer “The Hustler & The Champ”.

The excerpt above gives us an idea of how Mosconi viewed pool. Was he right? Pool is definitely struggling right now, possibly due to it's negative image. Maybe things could have turned out differently if more people had shared Mosconi's view of pool.

I'm not saying that I agree or disagree with Mosconi. I'm just throwing this out there to get other people's opinion on the matter.

I'm sorry if this subject has been beaten to death. I did not do a search on it.

Not even close - the image that Brunswick tried for decades to portray was a wet dream that had little to do with reality.
The tuxedo clad "World Championships" were a marketing device funded by them for a game that 80% of players
never played even in the golden age of 14.1.

Pool is a game of the lower middle class - like boxing, very few doctors, lawyers or Indian Chiefs participate.

There is no reason a player that drinks, smokes, gambles, still can't be a gentlemen. Most poolrooms back in the day were run like waterfront bars. You had to do something pretty bad to get put out the door. It just went on and on from there. Johnnyt

I only played in league one night as a sub. Do the 3 or 4 major leagues have any rules of behavier? If so, do they enforce them? Most of the new players come from the leagues. IMO if all poolrooms and sports bars would raise thier prices to $8 to $10 an hour, there would be better dressed and better acting players in them. Of course you're always going to get a few bad apples no matter what you do. Also, a dress code would help a bit. I know this will never happen. Johnnyt

There would be a hell of a lot less of them, too.

Making pool even more inaccessible, especially to younger players, is a horrible idea.

Well here's my opinion,
What a crock, Willie knocked out the guy who called a foul on him at the check presentation when he was handed his second place check. People complain about Earl, that move makes Ealr look like a choir boy. Please !

Pretty sure this is inaccurate.

stinky bait anyway

Much more accurate, Dale. Don't have access to my library at the moment or I'd check.

You would be wrong in that thinking, it's fact.

Jay, I hope you answer this ^^^^^^^^

BTW, I have personally witnessed Earl act out several times and on one specific occasion I'm thinking of, he's lucky he finally decided to keep his pie hole closed after chirping at the guy who had just beat him at the DCC, or he would have got the piss beat out of him right there in the main ballroom of the Executive West.

That really has no bearing on what Willie did, but good miss direction. +! for Lou
You should work for the government oh that's right you did.

So sad :-( You are the one that initially brought up Earl by way of comparison. Please keep up.
