Was there much trash talking between Archer and Strickland?

I tuned into the 14.1 stream when Earl was just starting his run. About the only thing i laughed about was when Earl missed and someone in the audience cheered.... He said, "I just shit on myself and you're cheering" or something to that effect.

Was there any more of an exchange the first day between these two? Did Archer torture him like he said he was going to? I saw Earl wearing the princess leia headphones.... lol..... Just wondering if i have any funny Earl bashing moments by Archer or the crowd before i decide to buy this DVD or not when it comes out.

Earl was Earl, and Johnny was Johnny.

Earl usually beats himself up at tournaments, so he doesn't need Johnny to do it for him. :embarrassed2:

I've been on the other side of Team Archer in the past, and he can dish it out when he wants to. Seen it, heard it, didn't like it, but chalked it up to competition mumbo jumbo. They all do it.

Champion pool players have huge egos, and Earl and Johnny are no different. They both know which buttons to push on all of their competitors.

That match was hyped up , especially by Johnny, to be a "get even" match, with Johnny pulling out all stops to get even. In that regard, it sucked big time. Less talking than you see normally in any pool room match. At one point, half of Johnnys talking was in the bathroom while taking a leak.

To the actual play part, you aren't likely to find a better match to watch.

And, not wanting to sidetrack, but can someone "in the know" and not just speculating answer a question for me.... it was billed as $25 two days. The second day ended up free due to problems, but some were saying it was $25 per day. Which was it?? Per day, or for two days?? If per day, the poster was very ambiguous about that!

There wasn't a cheaper price to get just day two. It was all or nothing for $25

Johnny was a complete gentlemen the entire time. Earl was also exceptionally well behaved. I too was surprised given the "bad blood" marketing hype and Johnny's YouTube video. I thought that each might make a concerted effort to stir up a little something, but it never happened. I think Earl is on to something with the headphones. Either that, or he's on some new meds. Either way, everyone wins when he tones down the dramma and concentrates on his game.

I was at the match, and helped out by being Earl's "cornerman" for the weekend. The guy who "cheered" when Earl missed actually thought Earl made the shot, not missed. The guy who yelled was embarrassed but it was too late. I'm not too sure the guy was a pool guy, I believe he was the son of one of the sponsors, so I don't think they wanted to make too big a deal about it.

But the "Bad Blood" was approriately titled. These two guys were not friends by any stretch of the imagination. I don't think I"m giving out any secrets here !! And neither wanted to lose. Earl was very upset with himself for losing the 10ball event on Saturday. He got to the match on Sunday early and was practicing and "entertaining" the fans 90 minutes before the match. He wanted to win this thing, and bad, I can tell you that....

With Earl, losing is not an option, he is not happy with anything less than victory. I don't really know how to describe it, but it almost appears that he loses a piece of himself. He see's himself as a champion, and if he doesn't play championship pool (winning) he feels like he let himself down, the fans, others, I'm not sure.. After he lost the 10ball on Saturday I drove him to his hotel and you would swear his dog just got hit by a car. Everyone else stuck around to watch the baskeball and have a few refreshments.

You can say what you want about Earl, but he comes to play, and gives it 110%. Though Johnny brought his A game as well, and everyone saw what he did during his over 100 run. Neither of these guys wanted to lose this one ! Trust me. Anyone that said this was an exhibition match was incorrect. Johnny was a cool dude throughout the weekend and treated us great. Earl brought was some real excitement and entertainment to the match.......Great time that's for sure. It was win/win for the fans...no matter who you were cheering for.

Agreed. They both played very well, from what i saw. Earl's previous antics, i believe from the match a couple years ago where he played Nick van den Berg ruined him for me. He was arguing with the guys family and the player. Just completely unnecessary. He may be a great player, but I have watched him argue and comment about other players and the crowd while other people are shooting.... That match sealed the deal for me as far as not respecting him, with his poor sportsmanship.

I am just unhappy that i missed Archer's run. He had the straight pool match won, had it not been for him getting almost straight in on the ball before his break ball!! My jaw dropped, i expected him to be out after strickland missed!!

Johnny did a nice shark job on Earl in the 10-ball by getting up and acting like it was his break, when it was actually Earl's....not to mention Johnny mocking Earl's headgear, and arm/wrist weights! I think Earl talked more trash to me at tableside!!

Both players gave an excellent performance. They each had their moments of greatness. As far as pool playing goes, they were both phenomenal.

Actually, I didn't think there was very much trash talking. Johnny's not really that good at trash talking. He's better at expressing himself with little digs and innuendos off the record. ;)

Earl, on the other hand, is very good at trash talking to himself, much more so than to his opponent. He's his own worst enemy, sad to say. Somehow, though, I think Earl likes it like that. :embarrassed2:

I agree Chris, you seemed to take alot of it even though you tried to help him by fixing the corner of the table. I remember Earl saying something like "Oh, you're worried about my leg huh?"

That comment may have been in reference to Earl getting his pants torn on the table corner before the 14.1 match. He was pretty upset and had a 1" tear.

JA wanted to win as bad as Earl. I think that JA wanted to really give Earl some crap and talk shark etc but maybe if he did it might shark himself and so decided to wait until he had a little lead and could give it a try. However the match was so close that there was no way for him to be able to take a chance on it. JMO though What the hell do I know? Really?

Here's proof that people only want to watch Earl play to see him blow up. If you wanted to buy the DVD to see some awesome pool, you wouldn't be disapointed. If you are buying the DVD to see Earl's wheels come off you will be disapointed.......

See the video a couple posts up, it was a great match and Earl is Earl..
What else can you say..

Hmmmm

That is a false statement if ever there was one. Folks came to see Earl play pool because he has been the best in the business for nearly two decades. And to see him play another legend, Johnny Archer.

I think the only folks that are waiting for a blow up are the "haters" so they can go, "see, that's what I'm talking about".....

I drove 8 hours to see this match (Chicago to Lincoln). And the fans in attendance were entertained as punch, please see my prior post on Earl in this thread.

It was a great match up even with some small "sharking" from Earl complaining about the table pockets and JA wearing his arm weights.

It was fun, it was a great match, and if folks get their knickers in a bind over a little talk, they probably should take up Checkers and leave pool to the real fans imho.

That is who I am tired of hearing from are the haters!! That was the most amazing challenge match ever and the level of play was amazing!! When someone comes on here and says I don't want to buy the DVD unless Earl went crazy is upsetting to me. I heard Johnny throwing some F bombs miked up and although the headphone thing was meant in fun, Earl didn't have to love that. I just don't think sharking should be held accountable for Earl winning the match. I want someone to post, Earl won the challenge match because he played well and it was a very close, exciting and closely contested match........I am also in agreement with everything you said:)

I tuned in late the first day and just saw part of the ten ball match.

Was it two out of three matches, winner take all?
