It frustrating enough when amateurs do this but watching pros just ruins viewing for me. SAFE SAFE SAFE. I watched Johnny Archer take the easy way out way to many times. Take lucky rolls out of the game. Take bad rolls out of the game. Players comes up short or long on position and plays safe. Player doesnt want to take a semi tough shout, play safe. Safe should only be part of the game when necessary. Like you can't get position on the next shot. Someone leaves you a tough bank. I see long banks on the 9 ball turn into safes. This isnt one pocket where you duck and weave for hours. The game needs to be offensive. How do you know how good someone is when all they do is play safes and many times because they screwed up on position. I get it, its about winning but do viewers really like watching this and respect this type of play.

Let's say you were a skydiver. It would be a lot more exiting for me if your main chute failed, and your secondary had some issues before it opened, and in fact if it did not open your splat on the ground would generate even more exitement and even a news story.

But you likely won't enjoy that very much being dead and all.

Neither would the players who are trying to make a living play shots they don't think are right just to make the game more fun to watch for the spectators. I'm sure if you gave Archer a check for $10,000 and told him to play fun shots for you during the tournament he would.

We know how good they are no matter how many safes they play in a game or even on the same ball. Usually it's the person that goes for the low % flyer that ends up losing, most don't want to be that guy.

A good place to watch a game with no strategy, position play or safeties where people just go for hard shots all the time is your local bar. The drunker the players the better chance to see some fun shots would be LOL

I remember that ignorant commentator Chuck Shriner said something similar
Which is plain silly
Safety/defence is part of the game and within the rules- no one has to play your offensive just cos you are offensive player. If you are poor in defence then you are an incomplete player which is what you see with many players in modern game these days- they are mostly offensive and power breakers and are lacking in safety department
Same criticism levelled against Italy and Germany years ago when they won FIFA World Cup- that they were defensive, obstructive, slow and boring. You think they care- they won fairly and within the rules. There were great brilliant attacking teams which were considered some of best like Zico's Brazil of 1982, Puskas' Hungary but they fell short of winning World Cup-cos their defence was bad

:D

I pay way more attention to a well executed safe than a pocketed ball shot. In a pocketed-ball shot you only need to worry about where the CB will end up (the OB is going in the pocket, so you needn't worry about it anymore).

With a safe you have to plan the endpoint of both the OB and the CB. Miss the endpoint of either one and you might sell out.

IMHO there's nothing more boring than break-n-run, break-n-run, blah, blah, blah.

Seconded. These guys are fighting for the few paychecks that cover their nut and leave them something in the bank. It is unreasonable and ridiculous to expect them to risk that for the entertainment of the few people watching.

Good safe is just as good as a great shot imo, why you are so bent out of shape about it is beyond me.

The next step past what you are saying is, 'safes are for pu$$ies'.

Johnny is a pro and he is gonna make the choice that he believes is best for the given situation.

He wants to win, ya know?

Beautifully said, sir!

The rules encourage safety play because you can win on a safety-getting ball in hand

This is how players must play "one foul rules," it's the nature of the game.

See why the game needs an "overhaul"? The rules encourage safety play because you can win on a safety (by getting ball in hand).

I've won tons of one foul matches, but I always knew the truth.....it was a game of not making mistakes, rather than how I liked to play.

Playing Two Foul rules {like I grew up playing} you couldn't win on a safety, you HAD to earn every game.

Milk is designed to take a calf and turn it into a cow.

It solves every problem so it's got nothing to do with milk

The game has obvious problems if you have eyes that can see and ears that can hear.

Carry on.....

And just HOW MANY are buying the current game?

NONE to VERY FEW!

It is FUNNY that probably 90% of the top professionals who played both 1-Foul and 2-Foul (CJ, Earl, Buddy Hall, Efren, Keith McCready, Busty, etc. etc., etc.) think that 2-Foul is a better game, yet about 99% of the people who have NEVER played 2-Foul and who are AMATEURS say it is a worse game.

At least CJ is trying to come up with something that may be watchable and get some mainstream attention. What are you doing, besides bashing him?

I get that its part of the game. To much part of the game for me. Some times safety play is used like slow play. Just to frustrate your opponent. I know 10 ball has different rules. I have seen where it's played that when you miss and hook your opponent, you have the option of making him shoot again. I like that rule. I guess if there were longer races they may opt to go for more. I get it, just not a fan as a viewer.

CJ,I agree with you 100%. If you or anyone could get people to play 2 foul for a few hours or (maybe few days),they would see that it's the best and most exciting way to play AND WATCH rotation games. But until then......good luck buddy:D I would rather watch the ol paint dry than to watch one foul, ball in hand. I just don't think there is any way to explain how good 2 foul is with words. I'm like you,1 foul ruined 9ball,. Like you've said before, the 2 way shots are long gone and so is the spot shot and maybe a lot of exciting bank shots:thumbup: John B.

Two foul rules was before my time, anybody got a good youtube link to a game that shows it in action? Could be in the good ol days or even in the modern era...

Heck I am surprised they haven't come up with a game based on safeties. Rack 9 ball, break and keep playing safes on the 1 ball. Every time a foul is committed you get a point. Wouldn't that be fun to watch. I have actually played that with a friend to work on our safes and kicks.

I dont understand?

I agree with you and CJ that two foul is a better game, but I am not in agreement that the game as it is today(one foul) is in need of a total revamp or that its not worth watching?

Who doesn't want to watch Efren run racks or SVB or Ko Pin Yi, or Busty or Dennis?
When their playing safeties don't come up much and their just a few of the top guys that play the game beautifully.

Two foul seems like a great game when a guy gets a roll or if safety play isn't something you like, but its not why the game is broken. If you bring two foul back and guys that play slow like Archer or Hill Billy will take just as long if not longer.

What do you mean. over haul?

Im surprised to hear you say the game needs a over hall, I dont understand that coming from you. I watched you play many times at your place on Gaston in Dallas. I have watched gamble in one foul and run out from every where, the one foul didn't seem to effect you when you played the game right.

I think the game needs order, on the Pro level, it needs more money and lots more tournaments so if a guy gets beat by the rolls one month he can roll the dice next month. A tournament every week like bowling or every month like golf and no one would care about two foul or one foul.
