WCBS Multi-discipline Championships, Ankara, July 2023

As usual these associations go the politically correct route- go for diverse geographical representation than the top players. Don't know about carom , but pool, heyball, snooker (both men and women) don't feature the really big names, cream of cream. Most cannot get into last 16 of a major. Kaci is top 10/ top 5 now in pool but he is playing heyball
Playing 10 ball is silly (but I suppose WPA doesn't have much choice even MR now dominate 9 ball ) - that will attract viewers/spectators in form of players (like Predator Pro series events) rather than mainstream non-players:D

i would assume they wanted bigger names, from all continents and disciplines, but couldn't attract them.

as for heyball vs english 8-ball, i guess heyball is more presentable and that e8b looks kinda silly with its tiny table and different size cueball. sometimes the players are bigger than the table.. 🤐

I am good with the inclusion of Heyball. Makes perfect sense to choose heyball over black ball because of the size of the market.
Yep. Also, a number of top Blackball (as well as Snooker and "American" pool) players have played in some pretty big Heyball tournaments. I recall a team of Chinese 8 Ball players playing in an English pool team tournament a few years ago but I can't remember any beyond that. Also, the undersized cue ball still being used in professional English pool goes a long way to eliminating it from being considered for inclusion.

(I might have lost a little winter weight but never played well enough to beat most of those participants)

Nice to see the carom participants are all top-level players.

Forgive my ignorance... this mean 6 teams, correct, according to the chart Bob posted?
That's how I read it. And if they do a full round robin in each discipline it is 15 rounds total. I suppose they could have a playoff of the top teams for a real final. With four days I think only two tables per discipline should be enough.

Edit: Here is the match schedule from the WCBS website:

Howdy All;

For some others, like me, who haven't heard of "Hey Ball", I live in the desert, don't get much news
out here regarding new games in pool. So, as it's becoming a big deal, here's a link I found for other
outta loop folks;

Can someone tell me what Heyball is.
The internet can't.
Sorry but seems I need to rely on human beings.
or I'm an idiot.
It's ok to just say I'm an idiot, but please give me an answer to my question too.

link in answer just above yours

2 hours per session, 4 disciplines. Maybe a race to 2 of 10 ball, a race to 2 of heyball, one frame of Snooker, and a race to 10 of 3 Cushion?

I think there will be 8 tables in operation each session. 2 hours for each match. I'm guessing race to 9 for 10 ball.

It’s not 8 ball as it’s played on a different table. Joy and the other promoters apparently came up with “heyball” as Chinese 8 ball was confusing. I don’t know what heyball is called in Mandarin (or spelled in pin ying).
I googed around looking for wtf hey meant. Thought it might be Chinese for the English "eight" or Chinese for the number 8 outright. Turns out it's most likely a tongue in cheek respelling of the word "hei" which is what they call the color black. Avant garde post imperial chic...

The game is ok to spectate in small portions. Snooker pockets still suck.

When I read all this, it sounds more like an exhibition event. One thing it isn’t is a “world championship of cue sports” Because who really cares about teams called Europe A or Americas? There are no top snooker players, and not including 9-Ball in a supposedly “world cue sport event” is plain ridiculous.

As already said it’s all about politics, but I doubt either Matchroom or World Snooker are bothered. It’s a shame common sense never wins out, because if someone just worked with the real power brokers in the cue sport world we could have an intriguing event.

A showcase of the various pool tables, players and federations is a historic moment.

The last 100 years of pool are well documented in words and some film. The next 100 years will have new experiences and better technology.

Of course it's an exhibition but I hope the event is a hit, because events that cross disciplines make for some good viewing. Obviously not a world championship, and most of the top players weren't included in the field.

It is only the inclusion of 10ball that takes the shine off of this event. If it's streamed, I'll probably not watch the 10ball, but I look forward to the carom in particular.

Yes I would agree I hope it does well.

Reading my post back comes over a bit too negative. I wish them well, let’s say I hope that do something better next time.

Pool has shined like never before in this era. Its likely there will be new promoters and organizing bodies that will shape the future.

As the WCBS grows interest globally, a global crowd will have different needs.

Ralf Eckert translates his books into multiple languages. Would Byrnes or Mosconi books be worth translating?

Have the rulebooks been translated
into other languages? The WPA has one pdf in English.

DrDave videos work with auto captions and auto translate. Not sure how well the translations hold up.

It's basically 8-ball played on a snooker table. There are other rule differences between 8-ball and heyball around called shots and fouls but I can't remember them off the top of my head and they don't seem to fundamentally change anything.

I recall one shot where the player was trying for the side pocket and there was a funny kiss and the ball went in. The shot was disallowed, I guess because it was a kiss or carom shot as opposed to a simple shot.
