Hi. I'm wanting to change the weight of my cue, but it has no weight bolt. It's about 20oz, and i'd like it to be around 18-18.5. Can the wood be bored out, and replaced with another lighter material?
Thanks
Eddie

Im not a cue maker, but I would imagine not. As well this should be main forum not wanted/for sale .

It would almost impossible to bore that much weight out of the cue butt. It would really depend on the type of wood the butt is made of. It would have to be dense like ebony or cocobolo to make much difference. If you bore into the handle its going to affect the structure quality.

What weight is the butt? Is it a steel joint? If it is you can replace the joint! If not...then you pretty much have to but a new cue cause to core out 1.5 oz of the butt...it would make the cue off balance!

I was told by a cue maker the joint pin weighs 1.5 ozs...This is on a 3/8 x 10 pin....So on Ebony cues he uses a Titanium pin because it doesn't weigh anything and keeps the weight of the cue down....Wonder if pin can be changed???

It's better off to get a new cue cause if you do all the changing...you with F$&@ the balance of the cue and F$&@ up the hold cue! I had that experience before do I know!

Drill a small hole in the butt of the cue. Inject some Helium. That should lighten it a bit.

Bruce, the cue makers are using a new gas called Lightenazium.

But kidding aside, you couldn't bore out that much and then replace it with a lighter wood.

If you are in love with the cue, learn to play with a little heavier cue. That is about all you can do.

After a month, you'll never know the difference.

His advice is the best yet, to add on to it.
Ive shot with 3 different weights of cues. Currently my playing cues are
19.7
18.8/ 18.5
and 19.2

I use to play strong with the 19.7 and got the 18.8 and took me 2 weeks to get use to it.

I play certain games with certain cues, its just what Ive gotten use to.

On another note, Would a lighter shaft help as well? Anyone?

It is easier to get used to a heavier cue then visa versa. When switching to a lighter cue then your used to, there is a tendency to hit with your hand instead of a thrust or throw which is the proper tech niche. Give yourself some time to get used to the feel, also try shortening your bridge and let the cue do the work. I am a certified BCA instructor and a road player for 60 years and it worked for me.
