Well, Well..........

Well, well....
I certainly don't want to take any glory from Smorg but I can say that there are a few other posters on here that may one day be #1. I can think of 2 right now without giving anything away. ;)

I don't want to take that opportunity away for another "great" to rise up and surprise us all. I don't think Doug would want that either. (here ...let me ask him.....hmmmm)

We need to remember he was a very giving person... whether it be "spice" or just a hard time. :)

It's easy to jump on a band wagon. It's hard to make the right decision and/or please the wagon members. Again, Mike's job is not easy. Watching and listening and helping him all day isn't a "bowl full of cherries" either.

Still, Mike will do what he feels is in the best interest of the AZB site LONG term.
Hugs

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!! (if you have twins in the oven!!!!):yeah::)

Smorg was all about GREEN

Turning Smorg RED just does not work for me.

I like that IDEA.... I'll run that by Mike again when he gets home. Red is so negative... green is so positive. Let me work on him.

As far as "twins" ..."oven". Hope you don't mean me! I'm done!!!
Heck I'm 44....I'm looking for grandkids in the next few years from my daughter.

I was speaking of some outrageous people on the forum ....whom I won't name but keep me in stitches all the time. :rotflmao1:

My next door neighbors had an "oops" baby when their children were almost grown. Ray's hair was almost coal black when Tim was born, three years later Ray's hair was almost snow white, all Tim's doing! :) :)

I woke up this morning an to my suprise am #1. Heres is what I would like to see done with the rep. I would like to see Smorg placed atop of the rep race an left there as a tribute to him (nobody could do it like the Smorg).
I would like to see Smorg also given the title of all-time rep king. I think Smorg's name in red is not good. I think green would be better. I think Mike an the powers that be would be receptive or atleast I hope they would be. Lets do something good for a change an not turn this into any
kind of flame thread or something stupid. This is about a tribute to someone we admired an have lost, surely he deserves more than his name in red................Lets all ban together an solicit the powers that be an see what we can get done............I've had a lot of fun doing the pow-wow with my rep buddies but Smorg is #1 to me an I think the majority of you feel the same...........Lets make it Happen...............

I suggested this a month ago in the post below when it became clear to me that Smorg was very ill, was probably not going to be recovering, and was probably not going to be able to post any longer due to his health.

Speaking of always being number one, I personally would like to see Smorg remain in the #1 spot at the top of the reputation list even after he is long gone (which I hope and pray will be a long time from now). All too often great honors are bestowed upon people only after they have passed, instead of while they are around to enjoy and be honored by it.

I don't know if it is possible to do, but it would be nice if Doug could be permanently given the #1 spot at AzB, and the #1 spot somehow "locked" so that nobody could ever bump him out of that spot. It could come with an official "Kind of AzBilliards Rep" title and would be a fitting reward for "lifetime achievement in great posting." I think he would take great pride in such a gesture.

If nothing of the sort can be done, I will continue to rep him every time I am able (and hope that others will join me and do the same) in the hopes that enough cushion is built up in his rep points that nobody ever catches up with him, or at least not for many many years. He deserves it.
Needless to say I'm in favor of it. I think it is a fitting tribute and symbolizes our united feelings of respect and gratitute for what Doug has contributed over a long period of time, as well as the collective loss the forum feels from having lost Smorg. If Mike has reservations about making this a permanent change, perhaps it could at least be done for a specified period of time like say three years (or whatever time he feels is adequate and appropriate).

We might even get lucky in that it might help to cut down on some of the stupid rep games that are being played (I know, wishful thinking) when the #1 spot is no longer even attainable for a period of time.

I was number one on the rep board many moons ago. Believe me when I say that it's not as great as it is made out to be. :grin-square:

Smorgie soon headed the rep board by popular demand. There's no question how he got to be number one. He was ranked number one when the rep system used to work correctly. He didn't come onto this forum and beg for rep, like some have done.

A few posters came onto this forum and created threads, begging for rep, stating that they wanted to get up to the top. They used to have some followers at that time. Imagine creating a thread begging for rep, but that is exactly what they did.

Today, the rep system is flawed. When you can give a newbie good rep and they get 11 green squares with one post, it is quite revealing that the rep system is not effective today, as it was when it was first initiated.

I personally think they should do away with the rep rankings and just leave it in place for posting private comments, positive and negative.

Although I happen to agree with you about how the rep system is misused and abused (I offered what I think are some great solutions here: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?p=1719420#post1719420), I really hope that this thread doesn't get derailed into yet another "merits of rep" debate. There are plenty of those threads already out there where that can be debated ad nauseum, but that's not what this thread is about. Smorg got to #1 and stayed there (while he was posting) because people appreciated and valued his posts and humor. There is no doubt that his place at the top was earned, and as a result many now want to see his years of contributions honored in his absense.

I do agree with much of what you say about the rep system, and I also would love to see Smorgie always be at the number-one slot forever more.

I suggested a long time ago, to include initiating a thread in the NPR section, that maybe since the rep system is flawed today, that it should be eliminated. I asked for opinons, how others felt. The thread went into a full-blown flame with an army of posters not only attacking me but my boyfriend who had absolutely nothing, not one iota, to do with the topic of the thread.

I guess there are some members of this forum who think the rep system should remain intact. However, the way it currently exists, it really is not very effective in rating members anymore.

It is kind of funny how much time is given to the rep system. I always get a kick out of the posters who get red-repped and then create a thread to say, "Hey, I got red-repped," hoping that the readers of their newly created thread will green-rep them. I cannot tell you how many threads I have read about rep, especially in recent times. Interestingly, some people do have very strong feelings about it.

My personal opinion, keep Smorgie as always number one, do away with the points, and just make it a comment-only utilization. Again, if a newbie with one post can get 11 green boxes in one day, what good is the rep system? It's ridiculous. :p

I love giving GREEN rep out to folks who say something witty or moving or profound with wisdom.

There are however a few I would really like to RED rep! but being in the position I am in, I try to refrain from doing so.

I like to read all the different variety of opinions.... it kinda keep me in check that MY own opinion may not always be well received and makes me think a little more.
