West Coast and 14.1 Straight Pool Tournaments

Wasn't sure where to post this, so I decided to post it in the MF. I have noticed lately alot more 14.1 games are being played in the pool rooms around the Los Angeles area. I saw three tables just the other day in the same room with some straight pool action going on. You would figure with the famous Hard Times billiard room right here in Southern California and home to some of the top players in the sport, there would be some 14.1 tournaments ever now and then. I truely believe that 14.1 is making a comeback and I'm noticing the game more and more in rooms across SoCal.

I just got off the phone with Mr. Robles from Phoenix, AZ and He is having the only World Straight Pool Qualifier Next weekend. Its the only one on this side of the country. Why is that? Im pretty sure I will be driving 8 hours to Phoenix next week to play.

Not sure where you are seeing it, but 14.1 has not been significantly competitive in So. Cal for at least the last 25 years.
 
The reason 14.1 will never be as popular as 8, 9 or 10 ball is the skill level required to play the game competitively.

Really??? Where are they playing 14.1??? Let me know and I might start hanging out at these places.

If there is in fact more as you seem to have noticed, it's because of one guy. He promotes very good straight pool tournaments in so cal. I forget his name? He posts here. He ran a few events that Oscar won... great TD as he loves loves 14.1. Any current info or name??? Richard maybe???

I believe you're thinking of Roger Tafoya. He ran a series of 14.1 tournaments a little while back in SoCal. Roger and I have talked extensively about getting 14.1 leagues and tournaments going as he and I both have a passion for 14.1.

The tournaments Roger ran drew quite a few participants and some really good talent (as already mentioned). I know he struggled getting some support, but I'm not sure why he hasn't had a 14.1 tournament in a while. We spoke this year at the BCA in Vegas. He was asking me about the 14.1 league that I ran in Phoenix and the handicapping system. So hopefully, he has something in the works. Roger has done a lot for 14.1 in SoCal.

Sometimes it's hard to generate interest in 14.1, but for those of us who love it, there is no better game.

I wish 14.1 was played in my area. You can't find a straight pool player in my hometown who doesn't have an AARP card. :D

Straight pool is making somewhat of a comeback with most player being converted nine ball players. The game seems to be doing well in Europe. Now if only it would be popular with the Asian players. :p

They had a World Straight Pool Qualifier in Cleveland a few weeks ago.

This was at a pool hall named Continuous Play Billiards (440) 842-5177. The owner gave it that name because he loves 14.1. I know it is not real close to you, but the guy may know more serious players in the area.

By the way, you can probably learn a lot from some of those AARP players. I understand Frank Zumo from Ohio can still run 100s

I played in a couple of Roger's 14.1 events at Hard Times and I could see toward the end, there just wasn't enough interest for him to keep going. Too bad because I know he really likes the game.

When it was going, it was interesting to see 9-ball players struggling to play 14.1. There were all sorts of clumsy play and weak stategies by everyone. High run were usually generated from shear straight shooting instead true control of the racks. I certainly stumbled all over the place because I think I just have a straight pool disability. Still, I like the game and would take the opportunity to play in 14.1 events just for the challenge of figuring out the complexities and subtleties of the game.
