What do you do to make money? What is your job and what do you do to make extra cash?

I am currently unemployed, and live in Iowa and can't find anything for work that I am capable of doing....Im not a handy man, I grew up working with computers and went to college for them, but Iowa and pretty much the whole midwest is pretty far behind in the technology department...

anyways, enough about me, Im just curious because after seeing a lot of awesome and expensive equipment people have, and their pool rooms I am jealous lol, how do I get that? :)

Get into sales. Any kind of commission sales. I sell RV's and motorhomes, its great work and pretty easy. You don't need a degree in anything to sell. All you have to do is nod your head and try to make them happy its real easy.

Car salesman is about as easy as it gets. The average pay for a car salesman is 46k and most decent car salesmen make at least 75k. You got to put in some hours but its not so bad. Selling is never obsolete there is always business and people are always hiring in sales.

I agree with bishop that sales is a great job to have for a pool player. It often only works for those who are self motivated though. Many of the players around here are in sales of some sort; cars, furniture, office equipment, food, etc. I am a Realtor, which I don't consider sales, but it does afford me the ability to set my own schedule.

I got lucky with a business 11 years ago so thank goodness $$$ isnt a concern for me anymore, I still work alot being a business owner the clock never stops but I make enough thats its worth it.

The above posts about sales are spot on, I wont go into details about my biz on the internet period(please dont ask me, thank you i like to be private), but what I did was sales and then opened my own gig and now I have alot of people selling for me and I get a piece of all the action, no it isnt a pyrmid scheme, its like the guy who owns a car lot and has 30 salesman, he has action on every deal. I started selling then opened a small office and expaneded it. it take along time.

Before my sales job, I played nickle and dime pool and made about $200-$300/week this was 20 years ago so it was ok $$$, I also had a good reputation for buying and selling cues and made about $1,000/month so all together I was making an average of $1,700-$2,200/month, i didnt have a job. also a few rail rail bird bets because I was at the pool room so much Ihad the line on alot of players, it wasnt much and I wasnt moving foward in life, the hours were long, got board with it and got a sales job in Vegas after doing that for a year.

If you can hustle pool your a salesman thay go hand in hand

I was never any good at selling stuff. Basically if you want to buy it then do it. If not, then don't. LOL. I suppose I would be different if it meant feeding my family and stuff. Though for extra cash I have done buying/selling on the net and newspaper. I am salary so I don't get OT. Though I have and do tend bar when I need a little extra. Also the stock market. If you have the sand, selling short and on margin is a way to make a quick buck. But you can also lose everything you own if you don't cover.

My philosophy/answer is more of a sarcastic one I assume. I just look at all the stuff that I want to buy to put on my Harley. Then what I want to spend on my pool hobby is negligible. LOL. Of course I am not in the situation where I don't have employment at the moment.

My 2 pennies. Good luck to you.. I hope you find something.

lol thats funny. If I were you I'd go find a small buy here pay here car lot that is individually owned and get into a laid back sales position. The advantages to a place like that is the fact that they are typically the bank and you'd close on most deals. Plus you might find more loyalty in small business. I can promise you if you just dip your toe into sales you can make some serious bucks. I can't imagine getting into any other type of business unless I'm applying for a degree required spot. Even crappy salesmen can make an easy 40k a year.

I sell high end beds and Massage chairs. Tough gig but someone has to do it. Top sales man last year and as long as you know your stuff and are a people person it is relatively easy. Made a great deal of money and I get to help people get a good nights sleep. I was a finance guy before this job and hated it for the most part. Sean

I told my son when he was very young: Do you want to have a lot of nice toys? He nodded his head and said Yes as he was about 6 years old at the time. I said well that's good, all you have to do is go to school, study hare, make good grades so you can get into college and there you can study hard, make good grades so you can get a college degree and then you can get a good job making a lot of money so you can buy lots of nice toys. It worked for him.

Me I was forced to take the route that many people on here have suggested- Sales - Personally I don't think I would ever want a salaried sales job. It is far better to maximize your earning potential by straight commission sales. If you don't sell, you don't get paid. That's a pretty good motivator.

I bought my computer system & software from a company in Waterloo Iowa many years ago. ASI Computer Systems sells to ad specialty distributors and business form distributors all over the country. Their sales people travel to about three or four big trade shows per year. They also have training classes right there in Waterloo. ASI makes BIG MONEY providing support to the customers that they sell their specialized software to. I assume that they pay their sales people and technical people good decent wages.

And finally the advice I was given when I was a little younger than you. I actually I had the same perspective as you about other people's possessions when I was younger. The millionaire I talked with told me it doesn't matter what business you get into just as long as you are the very best at it. If you are the very best in your field, people will pay you a little more for your product and services and they will refer you to others as well and they will keep coming back to you because they were satisfied customers.
Good luck. Now you have the secret--Ohh wait just one more important secret :-) Spend less than you make!

For extra cash, I compete in tournaments, gamble at pool, do a little computer installation work, sell used computers and give pool lessons. For the family money, I sell lots of business forms and promotional products.
JoeyA ( no table at home and jealous as I can be) :D
