when i see certain things in the pool hall when i'm trying to gamble a little, i look for things like this...

Loud Mouths
People who use no english
people who have to look where to place there back hand on their cue
people who line the OB into the pocket, everyshot with their cue
full stained cue's bright colors
practicing a rack of balls by themselves, and misses 3-4 shots or more...
people drinking heavily

these are the people i ask if they want to gamble, how about you?

So what you're saying is, you're not really looking to gamble, you're looking to rob someone.

1st thing you wanna do is find out when the weekly tourneys are...usually that is where the gamblers normally come in...
watch and learn from there...simple really=)

people who are used to gambling in the same range I do

I don't look for fish. I look for someone that knows the score that I think I can beat if I play my best. There was a time when I robbed a lot of people but even then I didn't seek out easy targets, I let people seek me out.

Going down your list:
I wasn't the loud mouth
I used very little english
I have been known to look where my back hand is on the cue
I occasionally put on that act of lining every shot with the cue
I play with house cues or a plain one, when I ain't toting my gaudy Bud sneaky
I practice racks of balls by myself and "miss" a lot of shots
I drank very heavily

I am the guy you are looking for. Let's play!

I like to ask the bartender (as I give her an extra buck or two while buying a beer), and I guarantee you she gives you the eschelon of players. Good luck with the "reverse steer" also. Dude, observe and learn. I often practice playing two and duck to attract just the "lock artists" in a new poolroom.

Jay, I mean no disrespect and I'm sure you're a real good player, but it appears to this old man, you're setting yourself up to get trapped. Be careful my friend.

Now, I have a question. Is the senario good for the sport that we all love?

Lets say, a person has been playing for a year or so. Someone takes a weeks pay check from them. Some people will take this as a challenge and practice more, trying to get better. However, a lot of people will grow frustrated with the sport and stop playing. Enough of this happens, and the pool hall owner can't keep the doors open. The tournament director can't find enough sponsors because there is not enough people supporting the sport.

I'm not suggesting people stop hustling or even stop playing for money. But, think about it next time you're in a pool hall. Is taking $100 or $200 off a lesser player going to change your life? Could it have a negative impact on the sport that you and I both love?

Just a few thoughts from this twisted old mind.

When I used to gamble alot I really just looked for a fair game. Whether that meant I was giving weight, or getting it. There really is only one type scenario in which I tried to "take advantage" . I hate, and do not understand, when a guy is on a date and is "excessively" rubbing a victory in the face of his companion. I don't get being a "sore winner" ever, but certainly not with an inexperienced player. This said since the guys pound their chest so much when I call them out they really have no choice but to play a quick one. In fact 90% of the time the girl pushes him into the match. I have done this literally dozens of times over the past 15 years, and always an easy win. However I think I do it to knock them off their high horse.

Crawfish is a schlick-meister. He knows all of the moves. I like 'em. I noticed that he also seeks out the female bartenders for the information.

Gmanpoke...Your post is spot on! Even moreso, in today's economy, if you "take" someone's paycheck, they may be waiting for you outside (with several of their friends), to 'discuss' your winnings! Sad to say, but this has always been fairly common in bar gambling...which is why most road players always had somebody to 'watch their back'!

i wasn't expecting this type of response. robbing peopel you say? i don't think so, they agree to gamble with me, whether i'm spotting games or balls for them. i was simply asking, what type of people do you not take so seriously, ducks as they maybe, after the first set they lose, they would want a spot and i would give it to them for a chance to win there money back. i'm not looking to get rich gambling pool. Christ, i'm a 5 in apa league. talking 20 dollar sets, not talking paychecks or nothing. guess i should of word this different, what people do you not take seriously?

I find that most of the times, these are the people that dont want to gamble.

Some friends and I were talking about this one night at the pool hall and one friend said " Anyone with a McDermott wildlife cue gets the 7 ball ! "
We all just about fell out of our chairs :D

I'm not against what you're doing, but call it what it is. You're not looking for a game you can lose.

Man when I go to the pool room I look to match up with someone I know I can't beat because I got heart and I like to donate!!:D

Ok....lets be real here most of us aren't made of money and if we can make a few nice small scores here and there to help pay for our hobby we are going to do it.Gambling on pool is an investment decision for me. I only invest my stake when I think it has a high likelyhood of paying off. I avoid the local champions, loud dick heads and the types of people who seem like they would be a problem if you beat them.

I try to look for someone who actually might have money to put up:grin:
Kind of a hassle to drag my credit card setup with me....:grin-square:

Tap, tap, tap!!!

gambling....

Hi, the first things I look for if in a new room are the exits and check the bathroom for a window large enough to escape through.

No disrespect intended but if you are going to your local pool halls and rooms that you frequent on a regular basis and you are a 5 rated league player then chances are you should be looking to protect your wallet and not play anyone you don't know because you are probably not going to get a fair game no matter what... now if you are just looking to play other players that are around the same speed as yourself then just look at the other players in your league and strike up a competitive game with them. This will probably be the best bet in the long run.

I typically look for anyone playing by themself. It usually starts off with, "hey, do you gamble any?" and we take it from there....
