What do you think??

You are not over reacting, this is a hacker working on those tables and the owner should know better. If he doesn't want to invest in his players then why should he expect his players to invest in him, simple as that. For a couple hundred bucks more per table he could get a top mechanic and get it done right, not to much to ask. JMHO

Use the extra money the owner was gonna charge for table time and put it in your gas tank to drive to the better tables. I wouldnt waste my time at a place like this. Chances are the owner knows how shoddy the work will be done and doesnt really care. If this is how the repairs are gonna be done sounds like he should have just left the tables alone.

I know how you feel. I have had issues with the local place's equipment, but at least my room owner cares and is willing to improve. The money just isn't there. He's a good human being and always treats me right so I couldn't bring myself to stop going.

But if he weren't a nice guy? And didn't acknowledge the problems, and showed no will to fix them (money or not)? Absolutely I'll go elsewhere.

Of the 3 or 4 days a week I play, 1 is always spent out of town getting my fix on good, new equipment that has been properly maintained and installed. I drive 30ish minutes to one place and an hour to a different one. I feel bad giving away even a fraction of my business to a different hall, but it's just the way things are. The commute is not so bad and you should see if you can get used to it. Your local room owner might have to see that people are willing to do that before he does things correctly. If that doesn't work then grit your teeth and get some good CDs for your car :/

If none of you show up for a week maybe he will change his tune. Nothing is worse than playing on sh*&&y equipment and the owner doesn't seem to care. The rate is already higher than most of the player rooms in the country, and he's talking about raising the rate????? Here's the title for your next thread-Local pool room closes.

No,IMO, you are not. My question is, did the owner know the tables were not fixed properly?? Or did the owner want to cut corners and paid a cheap price to recover the tables and knew what he was getting.
I would be curious to know that piece of info. If the second is true, then the owner,IMO, is not taking care of his regular customers.

One more question. Is the owner a player?? My guess, he is not or he would of made sure the tables were fixed the right way.
Hope this gets worked out Neil.

table mechanics

around 1950,the 5x10 brunswick i learned to play on was re-ragged about once a year or sooner if needed or if Willie was coming to give a demo.it would take about 10 hrs. the slate was cleaned and all the dings filled and sanded. And the cloth was really stretched tight on the playing surface and rails.pockets measured and the table leveled from every point. i have watched tables be re-ragged at the room i play in now (60 yrs later) it ain`t the same...bang bang bang and back together....

You are not overreacting at all! After the crappy work done on the tables, he wants to increase the rate to $9/hr... that's really ridiculous.

I'd bring it up to the owner and if he doesn't seem to care either buy your own table or use your savings for gas to go somewhere else.

As a player i'd be very upset that the tables aren't maintained properly....... As a room owner, i see why the owner doesn't care if 90% of his business is bangers. But at 7.75 or 9.00 per hour, he should make sure that the front two are at least done properly.

This is why i learned to do my own tables...... No one will ever care about our place like you do.

Tell the owner, that you and others are going elsewhere unless they are fixed properly, and see what he says. Just mentioning it, won't have an effect, unless it hits his wallet.

Neil, man I really feel for ya, thats sad , really sad that the table mechanics have no pride in their work, and the owner doesn't really seem to care much either.

Back when my brother had his poolroom/club I always helped the mechanic stretch the rails as tight as we could get them and the bed of the table too, I really enjoyed getting everything just right, (bondo, bees wax, or shims, whatever it took)

For the bangers, yeah you may let the rough edges drag some, but the owner should of stressed to the mechanics that he wanted the front two tables done right!

Hope it somehow works out for you guys at your room!

Gather together all the players you can and draft a petition to the owner telling him you will ALL take your business elsewhere unless he properly repairs/covers at least two tables. AND THEN DO IT! It would be far cheaper for a few of you guys to buy your own tables and play at each other's homes. And probably more fun too.

Plan B - Open your own room! It sounds to me like there is an opportunity in that community for a good pool room. Something small (12-16 tables, maybe four bar tables for leagues) plus beer and snacks/fast food and you're good to go. Just get the space at a low rent, which is readily available today. It's a buyers market! See all that vacant space everywhere. Two or three of you could go together and build a nice room, and share the responsibility of ownership, and make a few bucks too!

Just thinking out loud what I might do in that spot.

Great thinking, but plan B is out. The owner is a part time lawyer with connections. No one else is allowed to open a poolroom. Several have tried, and were denied the necessary permits. The asians did it anyway with just 2 tables. They lasted about two months before they got busted.

Open a room close to the city where he can't stop you. If you build it they will come.

I don't know how many reg's you have, but here's an idea. Talk with the reg's and see if they're willing to contribute to a pool to properly get at least one table up to spec. Then ya'll approach the owner and offer to get it done, and in return you expect free time (off peak hours perhaps). Even if you can only raise half or so of the cost, it could work if the owner contributes too.

Maybe even put it on paper for him when you approach him, to let him know how serious you are. Within that discussion, whether implied or stated, if he doesn't get the table or 2 up to spec, the reg's are going to find a different primary room.

Good luck Neil in any case. Hope you can turn it around.
