What felt to go with

I recently bought a 9' diamond. I purchased Simonis 860 HR for the table and have been told that I should have bought 760. Table has yet to be set up so hopefully I can exchange if need be. What do the pros play on? What felt is most common on 9' diamonds? Thanks in advance.

Simonis 760 is a billiard cloth and is generally considered too fast for pool (although some people like it).

I can't recall ever seeing a pro pool event on Simonis 760 cloth; if it is Simonis, it is always 860 or 860HR.

I use and would recommend 860. 760 would be like playing on ice. I do have it on the rails, it came that way.

Correct.

I've been playing on a Championship Tour cloth that is similar to 760. I'm switching to 860 HR in May. It's a little faster than 860, but not "air hockey table", like the 760 can be.

If I recall, the HR is the 860 material, but in the 760 weave pattern. That's what the mechanic said, I believe.

Simonis 760 is 100% NOT a billiard cloth. 300 [Edit had the wrong number] is the billiard cloth. 760 was the standard on pool tables for a couple of decades, before 860 started taking over. Yes, its faster than 860, but it won't mess up your game:)

A player's room I belong to, Drexeline Billiards in PA, has used 760 since they opened their doors in 1990. The few times they tried 860 or championship, the players all wanted 760 back.

Now, this room is a bit on the humid side in general, so I think the faster 760 does better there than 860.

860 is definelty the most common today, but 760 is awesome to play on, as well. I kind of think 860 has become more common because that is what Diamond ships standard, and uses at DCC. That's just my opinion, no facts to back that up:)

Edit, I played on a carom table that the owner was too cheap to get the 300, and he used 760. Slowest carom table ever!

860 didn't come out till the mid 90's I believe. All the pro pool we have seen before then (and probably a lot of it for the first few years that 860 was introduced) that was on simonis would have been 760:). Watching the few videos from the 80's and 90's that are floating around, the cloth plays just fine:)

Simonis 760 is not even close to being a carom cloth....
..it is a bit faster than 860....but when both cloths are a couple months old, it is hard to
tell the difference.....I play on both...frequently.

Simonis carom cloth is 300....and those graduated numbers ARE indicative of speed.

Simonis 760 is 100% NOT a billiard cloth. 3030 is the billiard cloth. 760 was the standard on pool tables for a couple of decades, before 860 started taking over. Yes, its faster than 860, but it won't mess up your game:)

760 is actually a snooker cloth, 3030 is Championship Tour Edition, pool cloth, and Simonis 300 is their billiard cloth. 760 is 70% wool, 30% nylon, as is the 860HR, it is a little thicker weaved, and isn't sheared as close to the weave as the 760 is. 860 is 90% wool, 10% nylon, but back in the late 80's, when the 860 was first introduced it was 70% wool, 30% nylon and shaved right down to the weave like the 760 is, but that exposed the cue ball burnish marks on the nylon to much, so that is what lead to the 860 90% wool, 10% nylon, less burnish marks, but slower do to humidity, which lead back to the new 860HR, because the 70% wool 30% nylon weave is less prone to humidity, just like the 760 is.

860 hr

I had Tournament Blue 860 HR put on my 9' table and rails when I got it in October 2014. I doubt I will ever use any thing else as it seems to be a great table cloth that will last me a long time.

Some comments from the Simonis website regarding their various cloths:

760 -- "Higher-Speed play for Bank Pool, Straight Pool and One-Pocket"

860 -- "Initially developed for 9-Ball. Slightly slower than the #760 Blend."

860HR -- "...the most durable commercial-grade billiard cloth made. Heavier than 760, napless, tough as nails, yet still providing the true Simonis roll."

300 Rapide -- "Extra fine threads for high-speed play. ... Approved by International Carom Federation for tournament play."

4000 -- "True directional nap Snooker cloth for snooker."

Sorry, I got 300 and 3030 mixed up.

760 a snooker cloth???? What are you smoking?

Thank you!!

I appreciate all of your knowledgeable responses. Sounds like I will be sticking with the 860HR that I already have purchased.

Thanks, Ben

860 hr

I can share my observation since I just had installed Simonis 860 HR on my 9" Crown II. I notice a big difference in speed versus the standard Simonis 860. The HR has one less weave. I played on my table for six straight days and love it. But be advised there is quite a bit of slide in the 860HR! Also, when I returned to my club for league play on 9' Crown III with 860 Simonis that were replaced one year ago, I felt like I was playing in mud. I have a soft hit and actually was hitting short. I freaked out and immediately thought I should of installed regular 860. Spoke to some old veterans who calmed me down and advised to work with it since the new 860 HR will get some dirt on it and slow a bit!! Hope this helps!

I would attribute the slide to the cloth being new, not 860/ 760.

You can do some crazy stuff on that new cloth.

I just came back from a trip to Palm Coast, FL and played at one of the nicest pool halls I have ever played in,,, Cue Note.. They have 860HR on GC Vs,,, and it was the slowest cloth I have played on in quite a while.

Just my opinion, but that cloth was SLOW.
