what is wrong with chalking right handed?

I didn't want to derail the shame/mike thread (not that doing so would be a terrible shame) but the fact that mike chalked with his right hand keeps getting brought up, as though its a bad thing.

I realize that I'm a noob, a lowly league banger, someone with very little experience. But I don't get it. Who the hell cares which hand someone chalks with, and why?

I'm a righty, and I chalk with my right hand. Wanna know why? BECAUSE I'm right handed. I have far more dexterity and control with my right hand. And I've often read here about "the correct way to chalk", swiping it across the tip. If I had to use my left hand (in order to satisfy some arcane custom, apparently) then I'd be a "driller" for sure. And then you'd denigrate me about that, too.

So what gives? Educate me, please. :p

I'm right handed so I chalk with my right. If I happen to get a bit of blue on my bridge hand, it ends up on the shaft instead of the linen wrap. Shafts are much easier to clean than a linen wrap.

I doubt it would be for post count. Dub always adds something interesting or useful to a thread, unlike others.

haha you made a thread out of that, is this for the post count? lol

Yeah, I'm all about the post count

Perhaps you were bein.g sarcastic in the other thread, but after you first mentioned, there was another response agreeing with you.

Perhaps I'm a bit naive, and I can take that. Sure seemed like an issue by the tone, and as such I was curious.

i was just kidding around and not looking for any trouble :)

I'm right handed and chalk with my right hand. I've tried numerous times
chalking with my left and I've always made a mess!

I'm righty.. shoot lefty.. chalk righty. I look at the ball with both eyes. I don't always have the pocket in my field of vision either. Sometimes I'm up on my shot, sometimes I'm down on my shot. Usually I have a beer, sometimes something more. I don't care for long walks on the beach(or anywhere else) unless I've got somewhere to go.

It sounded like the issue was more with how he chalks, than with which hand he chalks.. maybe he's chalking with his 'off' hand?

I use both, but mostly my stroke (right) hand, mainly to keep the excess chalk off the shaft. What I find strange about Mike Dechaine's chalking technique is that he does it snooker-style, putting the cue on the floor and swiping and tapping the chalk across the tip. It's clearly part of his PSR, but seems a little bit much...but hey, style doesn't make a difference in the score!

People have asked me how I keep my shaft clean and I tell them I chalk with my right hand to avoid getting chalk all over the shaft. I went to a wrap less cue years ago to avoid the chalk get into the wrap. I have seen some shaft green or blue depending on the color of chalk the player uses. I also keep my ferule clean of chalk stains.

Chalking with your left hand if you shoot right

Is a simpler mechanical maneuver because you never have to let go of the cue to switch it to your other hand. Over time you will save thousands of small body motions by chalking with your left hand. I taught all my kids to chalk with their left hand because it's just a simpler way to accomplish the task. Simpler is always better. KISS

I'm not sure what correlation there is between getting chalk all over your cue at either end and which hand you chalk with. There's sloppy work and clean work in everything in life. Chalking a cue is no different. Pigs will be pigs.

I tend to get chalk built up in the palm of my hand (I wipe it off between innings, but it immediately gets there for me). If it's my left hand, then I end up transferring a bunch of it to the shaft...I tend to stroke my shaft under-handed as I approach the shot (warming up the shaft...at least in my mind/PSR :)).

How do you see that if you're a righty? If you chalk with your right hand, your left ( bridge hand) is already on the shaft. Put the chalk down, lift the cue up and take hold of the butt with your right hand. No wasted motion there.

I want to know why all of you who are NOT Mosconi cup team members give a damn how or why he chalks a certain way? Until you guys make the Mosconi cup team then I think maybe you should back off the guys who are and how they do their own thing. This message is not towards anybody in particular and I am a bit hypocritical because I have posted threads about Earl Strickland but that's a whole other discussion in itself, but seriously I see threads all the time complaining about why this pro did that or why that pro did this and all I can think to myself is WHO CARES!!! THEY ARE WINNING AREN'T THEY! Thats why we are on here talking about them and they are in the big show giving us things to talk about.

I chalk with my bridge hand.
It's not just for convenience, I don't want anything touching the shaft
but my bridge hand.
I don't use powder and my stroking hand tends to be sweatier.

I am right handed and I chalk with my left hand.

The chalking is done is a two part motion, the left hand wipes the chalk across the surface of the tip, while the right hand slowly rotates the cue, the 4th finger of the left hand loops around the top of the shaft to guide the chalking and maintain the rotational axis of the stick. The stick is held almost parallel to the floor and is not over the table. Three swipes of the chalk covers the whole tip.

Me personally I think it slows your cueing rythmn at the table down when you chalk with the same hand you hold your cue, chalking with the opposite hand is a natural flow of things, ........

that way you don't have to constantly change hands with the cue your holding just to chalk.
