I started off with the method almost all beginners use, the Whack and Wish technique. After some time I matured into using the Poke and Hope technique. Hope has dimmed with my eyesight and I'm more and more returning to the Whack and Wish technique.

Please join in and list your less than serious aiming techniques.

The List:

Whack and Wish

Poke and Hope (AKA Poke and Pray for those of a religious bent)

I've always had sood suckcess with the sniff and slip stroke method. (KoolKat9Lives)

(excellent aiming system from JimS, didn't make the list of silly systems!)

the Shakey blur.......... (Grindz)

I've always been fond of the RFA technique - Ready, Fire, Aim. (Rich93)

The Venchewaly method is by far the best and always works.

I'm not sure .... but I think mine might be called the Shakey blur..........

This works best for me:

1. Look at the OB and locate the exact point required to pocket it (where the ghost ball would hit it).
2. Line up and aim exactly at that point.
3. Move slightly to allow for ball curvature - just what feels right, no fancy geometry.
4. Glance back and forth between CB and OB during 4 or 5 warmup strokes.
5. On actual stroke, focus on CB while drawing cue back and making the stroke.
6. Shift focus to OB about an inch before cue strikes the CB.

I am not sure I have a special methoid, or methoids, just know that when I do what is right the Ball goes in the Pocket, or where I wanted it for a planned safe.

I would say Whack and wish most of the times. Poke and pray the rest!

Along the lines of KK9's slipstroke method, I use a variation of it myself. It's called S.P.F. (i.e. "send poolcue flying"). It's particularly effective in "putting the scare" on my opponent.

Here's how I do it. I've mentioned it before and feel (IMO) that it is the method that comes closest to completely eliminating guestimations.

(ie - the ghost ball method requires you pick a spot on the table exactly 1 1/8 inches from the OB as measured at it's equator and then transposed down to the table and out. The portion of the ball method requires you picture fractions of the ball.)

I simply pick the point of aim on the OB, get behind the CB and line up the side of my cue shaft ( left side for shooting to the left and right side for shooting to the right) at that point of aim on the OB.

Once I have this line, I stroke the cue over that line and right at the OB. Pretty straight forward and for me .. very accurate.

I have recently hooked up with the spotter I used to work with. While I am in my prestroke routine, he sits across the the street and passes me information such as elevation, windage, distance, etc... When he says go, I fire, we have about a 90% pocketing rate. Some people get upset because our equipment is bulky but that is their hang up not ours.

My not so favorite one is g.u.o.t.s. Give. up. on. the. shot. I use this one when I'm tired alot. It immediately turns into wish and whack or hope and poke................... I used it a few times this last weekend.

Of course there are posters who are trying to be serious, still trying to recommend one aiming method over another, and/or who probably did not read the original post at all. I imagine each one just jumping ecstatically at the thread title with twitchy excitement over another opening for an aiming method discussion... : )

I love the send pool cue flying idea and will try this technique tonight.

I am jealous that NewStroke has a spotter and I will start looking into price ranges for my own. I need this.

That said, I hereby declare myself the Founder of the "Pretty- If" Method, whereby the shooter has a brilliant and clever Plan (the more complicated and unorthodox the better) and throws everything into it, thinking only:

Wouldn't it be

"Pretty If"

this worked...

I have been known to play whole matches of Pretty- If pool.

Poke and hope combined with the finer elements of venchually works well for me. Every now and then a prayer to the cheese sandwich helps especially with side pocket triple bank shots.

Its pretty tuff posting behind Newstroke, I thought I had the best method until I read that one. The Benjamin Martin system ain't bad either.
Actually, ghost ball works best for me. I like to use a modified version
where I visualize a path from cue ball to ghost ball, aim real small
and fire.
Now if I could only find the method that works on the Money ball:rolleyes:
