What is your longest injury-related break from pool?

I took off the last 3 months from pool for conservative treatment of a shoulder that's giving me issues (no pool, no heavy duty activities, and lots of healthy food and vitamins). There was moderate pain and weakness. Though the pain and weakness improved, I can tell this is a problem that might not resolve on its own. I started shooting pool again last week and there comes the pain and the weakness again. My game is as good as ever, but it is hard to fully enjoy it when your shoulder hurts. In a couple weeks I am doing what I should have done in the beginning...seeing a Sports Medicine specialist. Being away from pool for the last three months has been a major bummer. I've picked up chess and really enjoy it, but it is certainly not the same. I'm thinking I might be away from pool for as long as another year. I guess I shall see.

For those who have dealt with injuries, how long have injuries kept you away from the table and how have you dealt with it?

And by the way, I played through minor pain because I'm a pool addict and this is how I developed a condition which seems chronic. I didn't listen to my own body. You live and you learn.

Broke my leg in June of 1978. Next time I played pool was in February 1979, so my longest break (no pun intended) from pool was eight months.

I took off from June 1985 until May 2001. I had a beer bottle stuck in my mouth.:grin-square:

had a 2 1/2 inch forstner drill bit go through my forearm. cut 3 tendons and did a whole lot of nerve damage. cant make a fist anymore but at least i can grip a cue with my thumb and index finger.

off work for a year and a half ... off pool for a year.

Wow, that would drive me nuts. I don't know what I would do if I broke something and couldn't play for an extended period of time.

A guy I knew crushed his hand in a pressing machine and had this massive cast on his left hand for a long time. After a while, he couldn't take it anymore and tried to get me to cut a groove into the cast for a makeshift "bridge hand". I refused, of course, and a week later I ran into him at the hall, and he was shooting every shot with the mechanical bridge and actually got pretty good at it too. Only problem was, he only had one good hand, so if the moving balls came near the bridge he would be scrambling to pick up the bridge with his cue in hand to get everything out of the way. Now that's dedication.

one week

Was in a car crash with a drunken driver, luckily nobody got killed. I had my hand in a sling for two weeks but after a week I got back to playing again.

I would try shooting off-handed constantly, but I'm afraid that might cause issues from the extension of the arm and the ever-so-slight pressure on it.

I had a labral tear in my left shoulder first diagnosed in 2007. I put up with the pain since then until September 2013 when I had surgery to repair it. There was actually a couple of tears when they got in there. I was unable to play for about 6-7 weeks, until I was cleared to raise my arm above shoulder level.

It is still weak and sore but full recovery takes up to a year. I went back to work this week. Continuing with strengthening exercises and trying to get fully rehabbed.

Bone cancer detached my rotator cuff 3yrs ago! They put about a cue balls worth of cement in my bone, reattached my cuff, and I was back playing in a month! But not good for almost a yr!

Carpal tunnel/Bridge Hand & Forearm

Took off over a year. Due to improper alignment, balance and approach to each shot I created this problem after probably 25 years of play. I took a total relook at what and how my body was doing during play, that changed matters dramatically for the better.

Fell in love with my girlfriend, fiance, future wife in 1966. Got married in 1972, went totally brain dead and quit playing for ten years.

To this day, I don't think I've ever recovered.

Took a pen stabbed in my heart! D@mn 5 year injury! ... That was when I signed a contract for the military. Lol

But, that's ok, they taught me 99 ways to kill with that ball point pen.

2000 until 2 weeks ago. Played 2 hours and tore a calf muscle. Start PR next week. Original 13 year layoff was 9 surgeries in 13 years. I get a spinal epidural every 3 months or I would be in a wheelchair. I don't give up easily.
