What is your opinion on fiber tip pads?

When do you think fiber tip pads are required and why? How do you think they effect the hit?

Usually only used on ivory ferrules. Yes, they affect the hit.... might feel a little softer.

I use them sometimes and sometimes I don't.

Key word above "usually". Some say they are a must for ivory, but it's personal preference. I've had ivory ferrules for 20+ years and no pad.... No problem. The pads will soften/deaden the hit.

I had a shaft made with an ivory ferrule, and it didnt have a pad under it. The ivory cracked the first night i used it. I took it back, he replaced the ferrule, put a fiber pad on it, been banging balls ever since. That was before i started making cues, and i know some say they dont use em on ivory, but if i do an ivory ferrule and the customer doesnt want a pad, i let them know im not responsible for the ivory cracking and it will cost them another $40 to replace it again. I personally dont notice any difference in hit, but i turn the pads down to about half their original thickness after i put it on. Just my opinion.

I don't like pads between the ferrule and tip, just one more place for glue to fail but, unless instructed not to, I always use them on an ivory ferrule. I feel ivory is a very poor option for a ferrule and they need what ever protection that I can afford them.

I agree in that Ivory may be a poor choice. I think ivory has a draw to many players so they can say "I have an ivory ferrule". I personally can't see any benefit. There are so many other choices of materials that are better.

On my high end Coker, I have an ivory ferrule on one shaft and a juma ferrule on the other shaft. I can't tell a difference between the two. I DO use the shaft with the ivory ferrule more only because I turned it down to 12.5 and the other shaft is still at 13mm which is a little too big for my preference.

You may not see a benefit, but many do. I like the feel of ivory and most importantly, it stays clean. I tried Juma and after 2 cue guys attempted different methods of polishing, it was still a chalk magnet. When there is a ferrule that stays clean and has the feel of ivory, I'll try it.

Ivor-X is non-porous and does not absorb chalk powder. LBM is another good ferrule that stays clean.

Carbon fiber or phenolic pad can be options too if one doesn't want to soften the ivory hit.

I prefer a pad on Ivory ferrules. Layered tips do not spread apart as much as single layered tips and many are getting by without pads on Ivory ferrules with layered tips. But I hate things breaking on my cues so I use fiber pads almost all the time on Ivory ferrules.

No, a fiber pad is not that same as what we use.

Fiber pads, or fish paper, are just vulcanized paper.

Our pads are Carbon Fiber sheet that we machine into the pad circles. Our pads don't need to be replaced very often. At least not unless they get cut down too thin when the tip is replaced.

Thanks for the info Joey...I'm getting ready to build a few sneaky pete's for some practice projects and may try out both.
