What kind of ferrulle do you prefer?

Hi guys,
I recently cracked the ferrule on my cue after only having it for 3 weeks. It had an ivorine 4 on it and I wanted to know what you guys thought was the best option as far as ferrules go. Thanks ahead of time.

Also, anyone know why a ferrule would crack 3 weeks into shooting with it. I'd like to think that I'm not a banger and I never break with the cue. Temperature maybe????

It could have been a problem with the installation. It is possible to overheat the material causing it to internally crack. It goes unnoticed and after 3 weeks, the ferrule "developes" a crack.

It could also be a defect in the material or a complete fluke that it cracked under stress when hitting a ball.

Ivory is the prettiest and plays nicely. Sometimes they crack and break your heart. Any of the linen or paper based phenolics are excellent. I've never had a problem with either.

you cracked an iv4 ferrule?!?! that stuff is nearly bulletproof...

I sure did. Thing about it is, I have no idea why it could have cracked other than the fact that I had a new tip put on it about 2 weeks ago.

Micarta gets my vote. My new Darrin Hill has old Yellow Micarta and its by far the best I have played with and I've tried them all. Not sure how it compares to the "new" stuff but I hear some of it's pretty close. Very nice feel to the hit. AND it looks great!

you happen to know the details of the ferrule design and tenon? like, was it a through ferrule or capped & threaded, etc.?

Did you leave it in your trunk or some other extreme temperature place?

I'm wondering....

Is there really a difference in ferrulles...as far as hit? ...err..should I say...can you "tell" the difference in hit?

Which have a softer hit?
Which have a harder hit?

Is capped the way to go?
Is un-capped theway to go?
Does anyone even do un-capped anymore?

All I can seem to tell between ferrulles is that some scratch and scuff and/or blue up more than others...

you can definitely tell the difference, not as much as tips, but still very noticeable. soft would be something like abs, hard would be like LBM. people do both capped and uncapped, both are fine. some materials hold up better capped for strength reasons. uncapped has a little harder hit and a bit more feel since the impact goes straight to the shaft tenon.

What does ABS and LBM stand for?

hope this helps ??

hi BRKNRUN,

here are the defs:

ABS: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

LBM: Linen Based Melamine

hope this helps,

it shouldn't crack unless you baked it under extreme temperature. are you sure it's an ivorine and not an imitation made in China? pretty brittle for an Ivorine since I've been breaking with a plastic ferruled cue for more than how long you'd used your cue.

I to was cracking iv4 also but I found out by backtracking to my way of installs it was a tennon issuie not made to proper size in length to fit the ferrule right. Since I slowed down in my way's I never had another ferrule crack most of them are installed on break cues only.

Tap, tap, tap!

I too, have yellow Micarta (non-Westinghouse) on my player...running them shorter (5/8") than most...and absolutely LOVE them! If I knew where to get more, I would have them installed on any and all of my future cues. I have also noticed no staining from the blue chalk either, which is always a bonus. :) Also, they tend to blend in with the shaftwood enough that while shooting, all I see is shaft and tip.
